The tiers follow the current PvP rankings and change with each class tuning pass.

This WoW PvP tier list covers every DPS specialization in Midnight Season 2, ranked on damage, crowd control, utility and survivability for arena play. Patch 12.1 reshaped the mode before the season opened: the diminishing-returns reset window moved from 16 seconds to 20, snares were cut across every class, and knockbacks no longer work on feared or disoriented targets. The result is a meta that rewards whoever applies pressure rather than whoever runs from it, and the rankings below follow that shift.

Arena DPS Tier List for Midnight Season 2

Tier

Specs

S

Fire Mage, Assassination Rogue, Affliction Warlock, Arms Warrior

A

Unholy Death Knight, Havoc Demon Hunter, Balance Druid, Feral Druid, Beast Mastery Hunter, Windwalker Monk, Retribution Paladin, Subtlety Rogue, Devourer Demon Hunter, Marksmanship Hunter, Frost Mage, Outlaw Rogue, Elemental Shaman, Enhancement Shaman, Destruction Warlock, Fury Warrior

B

Frost Death Knight, Devastation Evoker, Survival Hunter, Arcane Mage, Shadow Priest

C

Augmentation Evoker, Demonology Warlock

S Tier

These are the specializations that either hold the best composition in the game or slot into almost any of them, which is what separates them from the rest of the ladder.

Fire Mage

Fire Mage took a nerf to Combustion and a buff to damage outside it before the season began, and was expected to be mediocre, yet it is currently dominating the meta. It is the best partner for any of the other top specializations, pairing with Assassination Rogue, Arms Warrior, Affliction Warlock or Feral Druid into a top composition. Its control toolkit is one of the reasons casters with multiple crowd-control categories score highly.

Assassination Rogue

Assassination Rogue came through early pre-season nerfs to end up as the strongest melee specialization of the season so far. It provides self-sufficiency, multiple crowd-control schools, some of the game's strongest spread pressure, and a powerful burst window. Its two best partners, Fire Mage and Affliction Warlock, are themselves so strong that Assassination rides up with them.

Affliction Warlock

Affliction Warlock was saved by damage buffs last season and ended it as one of the better casters, and this season does not appear to change that. It is potentially the best caster of Season 2, or at worst a solid top-end one, and it pairs well with the meta melees. Direct tuning also came from Patch 12.1: Haunt now increases damage by 16% rather than 12%, the new Impetuous Wrath talent grants up to 20% additional damage to Shadow Bolt, Drain Soul, and Malefic Grasp against a Haunted target, and the 25 August update added another 50% to Agony. It sidesteps the crowd-control nerfs entirely because it does not need a setup window.

Arms Warrior

Arms Warrior closed Season 1 as arguably the best melee in the game and Season 2 gives it that potential again. The PvP slow changes have a big impact on Warrior, allowing it to stay on targets and maintain damage much more easily. Expect a lot of Arms Warriors on the ladder.

A Tier

These specializations are strong and often the correct pick inside a specific composition, but they either lack the generalist flexibility of the top group or carry a clear weakness.

Unholy Death Knight

Unholy Death Knight finished Season 1 strong, mostly alongside a Hunter in one of the game's best compositions. Hunter still looks like one of the strongest classes of the season, which should keep Unholy a top contender. It can still suffer from high dampening and the composition variety of a shuffle environment.

Havoc Demon Hunter

Havoc Demon Hunter ended Season 1 sharing the best-melee spot with Arms Warrior, and nothing looks different for the coming season. It brings heavy damage output, a broad toolkit, and remains the statistically hardest-to-kill DPS specialization in the game. Havoc / Arms / Mistweaver is the composition Patch 12.1 was written for, needing almost no crowd control to kill a priority target.

Balance Druid

Balance Druid gained new dispel protection through Stellar Protection plus a couple of damage buffs. Once a Balance player gets their tier set, the expectation is that they become one of the top casters of the season.

Feral Druid

At the end of Season 1, Feral Druid had strong compositions because Frost Mage, Unholy Death Knight, and Hunter all synergized well with it. No real changes are coming to Feral this season, so a repeat of a strong performance is possible. It has a high skill ceiling, excelling for a great player and struggling for one who has not mastered it.

Beast Mastery Hunter

Beast Mastery Hunter was already strong and enters Season 2 even stronger. A Hunter-dominated season looks very likely, with both Beast Mastery and Marksmanship performing well.

Windwalker Monk

Windwalker Monk was extremely strong in Season 1, and Season 2 moves it somewhat from burst damage toward sustained damage. This makes it an excellent melee for that specific type of pressure, and it works well alongside the powerful casters in the meta.

Retribution Paladin

Retribution Paladin was a solid choice in Season 1 and appears unchanged for Season 2, still a reliable melee that pairs well with Hunter. In shuffle it jumps up a level, because immunities such as Blessing of Protection and Divine Shield gain much more value there.

Subtlety Rogue

Subtlety Rogue ruled early Season 1 and ended it as one of the strongest melees. This season does not appear to change any of that, and it should be as strong a choice as Assassination.

Devourer Demon Hunter

Devourer Demon Hunter was among the strongest specializations in Season 1, dealing enough damage to kill through defensive cooldowns while in Void Metamorphosis, with its only drawback being weaker defensives. This shapes up as a rough season, with the spec among the weaker ones on the Public Test Realm after many changes. It is worth watching, since it also started Season 1 as arguably the weakest caster before ending as the strongest once players learned it.

Marksmanship Hunter

Marksmanship Hunter had Double Tap removed, which hurts its burst, but several sustained damage buffs were added to compensate. Based on Public Test Realm gameplay, it seems unstable at the moment but promising for the beginning of Season 2.

Frost Mage

Frost Mage lost one charge of Ice Barrier and is heavily impacted by the slow changes. It remains a strong caster, but with Hunter and Warlock on the rise, the season could be tough for Mage overall.

Outlaw Rogue

Outlaw Rogue is a unique melee in a unique situation, historically not great for the average player because it does not do much damage. In the hands of top-end players it can be turned into the strongest Rogue specialization. It is only recommended if you want to push your skill to the maximum alongside like-minded players.

Elemental Shaman

Elemental Shaman received many changes for PvE, but none of the important ones apply to PvP, and it also took a nerf to Ascendance. This leaves a specialization that was already mediocre in roughly the same spot, or possibly worse.

Enhancement Shaman

Enhancement Shaman remains a very niche specialization, but Season 2 provides it with the damage numbers to support it. It also got a small healing buff, which helps keep it a solid melee pick without changing its overall viability much. Composition choice is very limited, though it can work alongside a Warrior.

Destruction Warlock

Destruction Warlock got some attention coming into this PvP season, giving it real potential as a solid caster. It has mostly struggled with needing excessive casts to deal damage, which is a little easier now that cast times have been reduced. In shuffle it can struggle more without the safety net of a proper composition, but it remains an overall strong selection.

Fury Warrior

Fury Warrior got a damage increase and is now dealing heavy damage, particularly in cleave situations. Mountain Thane is currently competing for the best cleave in the game, with damage and pressure that are nearly impossible to heal through. Fury lacks survivability, though, and falls behind a lot of other melee when it cannot cleave.

B Tier

These specializations can perform, but each is held back by a structural problem — a niche damage profile, a lost tool, or a stronger alternative in the same role.

Frost Death Knight

Frost Death Knight has the same issues it has most seasons: it is a niche spec with a powerful one-minute cooldown burst and little else outside Pillar of Frost. It is due for a rework, and until then it will more often than not struggle in arena.

Devastation Evoker

Devastation Evoker is greatly affected by the PvP slow changes, and Unburdened Flight no longer immunes slows, instead keeping your speed from being lowered. Beyond those changes not much is happening for the spec, and it may be a little weaker than last season, where it already struggled.

Survival Hunter

Survival Hunter looks set to do quite well in Season 2 but is overshadowed by Marksmanship and Beast Mastery. Like Feral, it is favored by players who master it, but even at the highest skill level it can be difficult to compete with the meta.

Arcane Mage

Arcane Mage is a strange specialization right now, without enough burst to compete with the other Mage specs. Its utility has also been given to them, so it brings almost nothing unique, making it a wild card for the start of Season 2.

Shadow Priest

Shadow Priest got a small damage buff, but it is hard to justify bringing one over an Affliction Warlock. Since Affliction is shaping up as one of the best casters this season, Shadow pairs great with one, which gives the spec some hope of being part of the meta.

C Tier

These specializations are playable but rarely the optimal choice in any composition, usually because their design does not fit what arena asks for.

Augmentation Evoker

Augmentation Evoker has struggled in PvP since its introduction, and its support-oriented design still does not perform well there, as it fails to provide the pressure that a second DPS would bring. It does provide really strong burst damage, but that sits on too long a cooldown to be competitively viable. It is niche and a struggle to play, never optimal in any composition.

Demonology Warlock

Demonology Warlock remains one of the weaker casters and needs love from Blizzard to perform in PvP again. Warlock as a class has a good skill ceiling, so a great player can still see good results, but more often than not it struggles next to the other Warlock specs or other classes entirely.

What Patch 12.1 Changed in Arena

Season 1 cut hard crowd control from three applications to two before immunity, and 12.1 pushed the diminishing-returns reset window from 16 seconds to 20. In practice the first stun lands full, the second at half, and the third does not land at all, after which you wait 20 seconds from the end of the effect before the category resets. Movement-speed reductions were cut across every class, with Grip of the Dead dropping from 90% to 60%, Chains of Ice from 70% to 50%, and Crippling Poison from 50% to 30%. Players can no longer be knocked back while feared or disoriented, which killed peel patterns built on Typhoon-into-fear or Thunderstorm on a scattered target. Gladiator's Distinction was re-weighted toward primary stat with DPS stamina halved, and a Random Arenas bot mode was added for drilling openers. Season 2 began on 18 August, with Honor gear at item level 331 and Conquest at 344 in PvP.

Our WoW PvP tier list for Midnight Season 2 Patch 12.1 ranks every DPS spec for arena, with what changed and why each one sits there.

[4,3
1410,1408,1409,1407
97,101
127
post-41634","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-wow","category-all","tag-best-pvp-dps-specs-midnight","tag-pvp-tier-list-wow","tag-wow-midnight-pvp-tier-list","tag-wow-pvp-tier-list","author-dina

The top of the ladder is shared by Fire Mage, Assassination Rogue, Affliction Warlock and Arms Warrior, all of which either hold the best composition in the game or fit into almost any of them.
