Project Dawn is a fan-created restoration mod for Destiny 2 that originated as a fork of Project Sunrise. It aims to recreate the game as it existed during Season of Arrivals in 2020 while engineering custom server infrastructure for private servers. Players can access it by downloading an archived build alongside standalone client packages.

What Is Project Dawn in Destiny 2?

Project Dawn is an independent modding initiative designed to restore vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, environments, and activities. While Project Sunrise focuses on single-player offline exploration and peer-to-peer matchmaking, Project Dawn pursues full reverse-engineered server infrastructure to support dedicated private multiplayer instances. The team also experiments with sandbox alterations that were never part of the original game, such as dual-wielding akimbo weapons. Akimbo weapons are a welcome addition to many players, even if the stance looks goofy when paired with hand cannons.

Playable Content and Features

The mod runs on the archived Season of Arrivals game build and restores several legacy experiences:

  • Story Campaigns: The full Curse of Osiris campaign is playable from start to finish across all eight missions.

  • Early Red War Missions: Builds introduce Homecoming and Adieu alongside restored waypoint tracking.

  • Strikes: Players can launch into A Garden World and Tree of Probabilities, including Nightfall and Grandmaster difficulties.

  • New Light: Features the introductory mission with restored lighting and encounter scripting.

  • Seasonal Events: Includes a functional Festival of the Lost event in the Tower, complete with access to the Haunted Forest.

  • In-Game Tools: An insert-key debug menu grants flight, noclip, teleportation, infinite ammo reserves, and toggles for AFK timers.

  • Loadout Management: Includes an integrated loadout editor that allows real-time perk filtering, armor stat adjustments, and inventory customization without restarting the client.

    System Requirements

Running the Project Dawn client requires specific software and legacy game assets:

    Requirement
Specification

    Operating System
Windows 10 or Windows 11

    Shell Environment
Windows PowerShell 5.1 or newer

    Disk Storage
Roughly 110 GB of free drive space

    Destiny 2 Build
Archived build 86657.20.08.23.1800.d2_rc

    Steam Account
Active account owning Destiny 2

Large download sizes do not bother some players, who maintain that storage requirements should never prevent the preservation of old game versions. In one player's words regarding mod projects.

I hate when mods are shown off because more than half of the player base will never be able to experience it.
