The same update made the highest Champion divisions more exclusive and added a Competitive Overview display comparing your rank with other players in that queue.

Your Tank, Damage, and Support ranks are separate in Role Queue, and Open Queue has its own rank. You can check your tier and division in your Career Profile or through Competitive Progress in the Competitive Play menu.

How to unlock Competitive

You unlock regular Competitive by winning 20 matches in Unranked modes. Stadium Competitive has its own entry requirement: 10 Stadium Quick Play wins, with an exemption for players who played Stadium during Seasons 16 or 17.

Placement matches and rank resets

Complete 10 placement matches to establish your rank in a role or Open Queue; losses still count toward finishing placements. A predicted rank appears after each placement before your final placement result.

Core Competitive resets ranks every three seasons. A reset returns Role Queue and Open Queue ranks to Unranked, and you must complete the respective 10 placements again for each role or queue you want to rank in.

Rank and matchmaking rating are linked in Core Competitive, so the visible rank represents the rating used for matchmaking. The February 2026 reset also soft reset Hero Skill Ratings without changing the rank distribution.

How rank progress works after each match

Your rank updates after every match, with wins generally adding progress and losses generally removing it. The Rank Information screen shows your percentage change within the division, a progress bar toward promotion, and modifiers explaining adjustments to that change.

Match expectations

The favored team is determined from the teams' average ranks before the match. These modifiers account for whether the result matched that expectation.

Modifier

What happened

Uphill Battle

You won despite being the underdog, increasing the positive adjustment.

Expected

You won as the favored team, reducing the positive adjustment.

Consolation

You lost as the underdog, softening the negative adjustment.

Reversal

You lost as the favored team, increasing the negative adjustment.

Other progress modifiers

Calibration applies when the system is uncertain about your rank, while the Wide modifier reduces progress changes when you play in a wide group. Pressure adjusts progress toward the average at the ladder's extremes.

Leaver Compensation reduces the progress lost when a teammate leaves, and New/Reworked Map reduces losses on unfamiliar maps. Positive modifiers appear with green arrows and negative modifiers with red arrows on the rank screen.

How Demotion Protection works

Demotion Protection activates when a loss would take your progress below 0% and drop you into a lower division. You keep your division for that update, but a further loss while protected causes demotion.

The negative progress is carried forward rather than erased. You must get back above 0% to leave protection while keeping your division, so a win that does not recover enough progress leaves protection active for another match.

After demotion, the update screen separates the carried-over deficit with a black bar from the progress lost in the latest match.

Top 500 requirements and Challenger Score

Qualifying for the leaderboard

Top 500 Challenger has leaderboards for individual roles, Combined Roles, and Open Queue, separated by region and platform. You can open them from the Competitive Play menu.

To qualify, you need to meet these requirements.

Adept Competitor: Complete the challenge requiring 250 lifetime Competitive wins.

Rank: Hold Master or higher for Core Competitive eligibility.

Endorsement: Reach Endorsement Level 2 or higher.

Challenger Score: Reach at least 1,500 for an individual role, or 2,000 for Combined Roles or Open Queue.

PC account security: Enable Blizzard SMS Protect.

Meeting the minimum score does not guarantee a place: only the 500 qualifying players with the highest Challenger Scores enter the leaderboard. Since October 6, 2026, those players are sorted by Rank by default, and end-of-season title rewards reference Rank. You can therefore lead the board on actual rank even if your Challenger Score is the lowest among its 500 members.

Earning and losing Challenger Score

You earn Challenger Score from wins at Master 5 or higher in Core Competitive, or All-Star 5 or higher in Stadium. Core payouts use your own rank rather than the highest-ranked player in the match, and losses deduct 40% of the corresponding win payout.

Role Queue score contributes to both the relevant role leaderboard and Combined Roles; Open Queue and Stadium accumulate score separately. Wide matches do not award Challenger Score, and Heat Bonus was removed on October 6, 2026.

The following Core payouts include the August 11, 2026 increases at the highest divisions.

Division

Score per win

Score per loss

Master 5

+20

−8

Master 4

+30

−12

Master 3

+40

−16

Master 2

+50

−20

Master 1

+60

−24

Grandmaster 5

+100

−40

Grandmaster 4

+125

−50

Grandmaster 3

+150

−60

Grandmaster 2

+200

−80

Grandmaster 1

+250

−100

Champion 5

+350

−140

Champion 4

+450

−180

Champion 3

+550

−220

Champion 2

+700

−280

Champion 1

+900

−360

Top 500 rewards

Top 500 rewards require finishing the season on the leaderboard, unlike regular Competitive rewards that use your season's highest rank. Top 500 Challenger player icons return with a new icon available every rank reset, covering three seasons.

Buy Overwatch Rank Boost

Leave the grind to us!
Buy now!

Playing ranked with friends

Core Competitive divides groups into narrow and wide categories based on the gap between members' ranks. Wide groups face other wide groups, while solo players are matched only with narrow groups.

A wide group has longer queue times and smaller rank changes, with the reduction becoming greater as the group's rank spread increases. The game warns you before a match if your selected role combination makes your group wide.

Four-player wide groups cannot queue, and wide groups cannot enter Competitive 6v6 Open Queue at any group size.

Console players using mouse and keyboard enter the Mouse and Keyboard Pool alongside PC players, and their ranks, skill ratings, and internal MMR are separate from their Controller Pool statistics. PC players using controllers cannot enter the Controller Pool.

Stadium ranks versus regular Competitive

Stadium rank order

Stadium uses its own ladder, with five divisions per regular league and a separate Top 500 Challenger leaderboard.

Order

Stadium league

1

Rookie

2

Novice

3

Contender

4

Elite

5

Pro

6

All-Star

7

Legend

Leaderboard

Top 500 Challenger

Starting rank and progression

You start Stadium at Rookie instead of completing a fixed set of placements. Stadium Points gained or lost are calculated per match from your current and predicted rank; a larger gap makes you move toward the predicted league faster.

Protection prevents rank loss until you approach that predicted rank, regardless of your league. In a lost match, individual rounds grant Stadium Points toward your rank and Competitive Points, but loser consolation is disabled in All-Star and Legend.

If someone outside your group leaves, your lost points are reduced, with less compensation at higher leagues. Leaving yourself applies the full loss penalty and a suspension across Competitive Play modes.

Stadium grouping limits

Stadium uses division limits for grouping rather than Core Competitive's narrow and wide categories.

Your league

Allowed group rank gap

Rookie through Elite

No grouping restriction

Pro

Within 15 divisions

All-Star

Within 10 divisions

Legend

Within 5 divisions

The Overwatch Stadium Rank Boost handles the climb to your selected league and division.

Per-hero ratings versus your queue rank

Unlocking Hero Skill Rating

Hero Skill Rating is a separate number from 0 to 5,000, with the upper limit representing the top of Champion 1, and it is not used for matchmaking. After completing queue placements, you can place individual heroes; hero placements and ratings are separate between Role Queue and Open Queue.

Each hero needs five qualifying placement matches. To count toward a hero's placements, a match must include at least three minutes on that hero, and the hero must be among your three most played in that match.

Rating updates and where to check them

Every hero you play has its rating updated behind the scenes according to time played, while the end-of-match Competitive Overview displays only your three most played heroes. The placement eligibility limits do not restrict which heroes receive those background rating updates.

You can view Hero Skill Ratings in the Career Profile's Hero Comparison dropdown and on each hero's Statistics page.

See also: Overwatch Sub-Roles Explained

Overwatch 2 ranks run from Bronze through Champion, with Top 500 as a separate leaderboard.
