Supported controller lights display red for Horde characters and blue for Alliance characters.

The World of Warcraft controller interface is native to Forever rather than dependent on a controller addon. For account installation and the initial experience presets, use our WoW Forever beginner guide.

Set up WoW Forever on Steam Deck

The November 5 Steam OS walkthrough uses Steam OS 3.9 or later, an active monthly WoW subscription including Forever, and approximately 60 GB of available storage on the internal drive or microSD card; that storage figure is the creator's estimate. Its default stable Proton setup depends on the Steam OS version, so update the operating system before following this route.

Press Steam, choose Power, and enter Desktop Mode.

Download the Battle.net installer from Blizzard's official site into Downloads, then right-click the installer and select Add to Steam.

Create a folder called
WoW Forever
inside Documents.

Launch the installer from Steam using the default stable Proton version, choose your language, then change its destination to
/home/deck/Documents/WoW Forever
.

Finish installation, but close the first Battle.net login window completely without signing in.

Open the new Battle.net folder inside WoW Forever, right-click
Battle.net Launcher.exe
, and add that file to Steam.

In the launcher's Steam Properties, rename the entry to
World of Warcraft
, then return to Gaming Mode and launch it.

Use Steam + X for the on-screen keyboard during login and select Keep me logged in at the password step.

Install Forever into
/home/deck/Documents/WoW Forever
, or choose your microSD card beneath
/run/media
; the card's displayed name varies by device.

Launch the game, create a character, open the top Menu, select Gamepad and enable Gamepad UI; use B to return, the D-pad to select your character and A to enter.

On the Deck, Start opens the menu wheels, and releasing the right stick over an option selects its tab. The creator recommends spending roughly five to ten minutes exploring these menus and personalizing the options.

For another handheld example, a Windows 11 ROG Xbox Ally ran Battle.net and Forever in a November 2 test, although that handheld setup was described as unsupported at the time. That test used the touchscreen and on-screen keyboard to reach the initial gamepad toggle.

Chat limits and beta status

Opening Chat with a shortcut does not offer controller-based text input; Blizzard frames cutting back on keyboard reliance as a continuing objective, with a play style that needs no keyboard as the eventual goal. We'd keep a keyboard beside a couch setup for conversation because typing still requires one.

Controller chat feels awkward to many players, who want native speech-to-text or turn to addons to work around it.

Blizzard News staff wrote on November 3 that gamepad support was available in beta, with further improvements ahead. The launch build's complete functional state covers major gameplay and core interfaces, while Blizzard's gamepad overview retains the beta designation.

Buy WoW Forever Boosts

Leave the grind to us!
Buy now!

Default controller layout

These WoW Forever controller layout labels use Xbox button names.

Input

Function

Left stick

Move your character.

Right stick

Turn the camera.

LB

Select a friendly target.

RB

Select a hostile target.

X / A

Interact / jump.

B / Y

Back / inspect.

Menu

Open the main menu.

View, with overlapping squares

Change the focused interface frame.

LB + RB + right stick forward/back

Zoom the camera in/out.

The face buttons also have spell functions within the action-bar system. Holding the right stick opens a ping wheel with Attack, Warning, On My Way and Assist options.

The upper-left input legend expands to show context-sensitive controls, while panel footers display available interactions; some screens still lack those footers.

Menus, bags and launch interface improvements

Launch updates added controller navigation for ruleset selection and cinematic skipping, and Back/Cancel can end a flight at its next available flight point. Unrequested popups no longer automatically take gamepad focus; use View/Select or the equivalent input to focus them, and supported panel navigation displays LT/RT prompts.

The bag interface includes clearer visual states, remaining-space and ammunition indicators, improved search layout, and better keyring navigation. Fixes address focus after item destruction, navigation across uneven bag columns, inventory errors during trading and errors when opening individual bags after changing input interfaces.

Profession-trainer fixes restore Train when only a skill upgrade is available and clarify that removing a profession requires holding its button. The launch build fixes quest-detail errors in other map regions, allows Color Picker opacity adjustment and keeps gamepad tooltips visible.

Action-bar fixes address offsets after changing keyboard-and-mouse pages and settings failing to update immediately in Edit Mode. Addon compatibility received improvements intended to reduce interface conflicts.

Addon-related freezes, broken tooltips and disrupted controller menus still frustrate players who report needing reloads or a mouse. For quest-map interface issues, our Questie settings and beta support guide covers that addon separately.

Action bars, spell bindings and shortcuts

Switch bars and complete layouts

Your HUD provides four bars: the default, LT, RT, and LT + RT, with the active abilities changing as you hold the triggers. Releasing them restores the default bar.

Hold LB + RB and press D-pad Left or Right to switch between three complete sets; each set contains 28 customizable slots across its four bars, for 84 slots altogether. The button arrangement remains consistent between sets.

For a Mage, one customizable example puts Polymorph on Up, Fireball on LT + Up, Frostbolt on RT + Up and Blizzard on LT + RT + Up; these assignments are examples rather than mandatory bindings.

Bind skills from the spellbook

Open the spellbook, select a skill, choose its Bind action and press the button combination where you want that skill; the PlayStation demonstration uses Square to enter binding. Learning a spell no longer places it on your action bars automatically in the launch build.

Fixed default face-button assignments and the fourth default ability slot feel too restrictive to some players who want more remapping freedom.

Open bags, quests, chat and buffs

Shortcut

Opens

LB + RB + B

Backpack.

LB + RB + D-pad Up

Quest Tracker.

LB + RB + D-pad Down

Chat.

LB + RB + Y

Buff management.

These panels are accessible through the main radial menu too.

Camera, HUD and movement settings

The WoW Forever controller settings include Camera, HUD Modifier, Frame Focus Style, Action Bars, Targeting and Raid Targeting Options. Edit Mode and Options both support gamepad customization in the launch build.

For a small handheld display, we'd favor the compact layout: the handheld test's author recommends reducing the Chat Frame, lowering the player and target frames, and checking Compact Action Bar to free screen space.

One November 5 creator recommends a Back Pedal Stick Threshold around 60–70% to reduce unintended backward movement, plus a Stick Run Threshold that makes both walking and running comfortable; the percentage is that creator's suggested tuning. Adding the Battle.net client through Steam's Add a Non-Steam Game option gives access to Steam overlay input.

For a cursor drifting onto another monitor, the same creator uses this chat command to constrain it:

/console clipCursor 1

An October 30 beta session reported frame-rate drops and disconnections with high graphics settings. Treat that as one test's experience rather than a prediction of your launch performance.

Targeting, healing and ground placement

Friendly, hostile and focus targets

Holding L1 or R1 opens friendly or enemy targeting respectively in the PlayStation demonstration. The launch build supports targeting friendly corpses through friendly analog or tab targeting, and critters through hostile analog or soft targeting.

Hostile analog targeting can select enemy players regardless of their PvP flag, while friendly analog targeting excludes them. Analog targeting can reach units behind your character when they remain visible on screen.

Use LB + RB + Face Down to select a previously assigned Focus Target; when your selected target is that focus, its context menu includes Clear Focus. Attackable units using Feign Death require the gamepad reticle directly over them before they can be targeted.

Healing expectations

Friendly and hostile targeting support party play across healing, tanking and damage roles. Aiming at an ally with L1 and then using an L2-bound shield is one demonstrated healing sequence.

Healing through target scrolling was the hardest part of one player's earlier Classic controller experience.

I Raided all of Sod on Steam Deck. It was easy and fun. Using ConsolePort for Classic. The hardest is Healing, Because of the scrolling. That was the Hardest part.

— one player

Ground effects and pet placement

Ground-targeted items on the gamepad action bar use a second press of their action-bar button to confirm placement, matching ground-targeted spells. Pet Move destinations can be confirmed with Interact or another activation of the ability.

What players report

Fixed bindings: Nine players on the official WoW: Forever forums wanted remappable face buttons because holding modifiers throughout a rotation felt tedious.

Casual play: Three forum participants described the controller system as a promising start that made casual play easier.

Addon preference: Two players on the official forums judged the native controls worse than ConsolePort.

Missing bars: One forum player used Autobar when ordinary action bars stayed hidden; another reported that enabling the bars and reloading did not restore them.

Keyboard coexistence: One forum player reported.

I was still able to type and use keyboard with the gamepad.

— one player

Enable WoW Forever controller support, set up Steam Deck, bind spells, switch action bars and use targeting shortcuts; chat still needs a keyboard.

[1460,3
1885,1886,1883,1884
97
127
post-44741","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-wow-forever","category-all","tag-wow-controller-support","tag-wow-forever-controller-setup","tag-wow-forever-controller-support","tag-wow-forever-gamepad","author-dina

Yes—WoW Forever controller support is already available, with Blizzard describing it as beta on November 3.

Is WoW Forever controller support good?

One creator found the November 5 controller interface viable after configuring input and settings; another found the controls intuitive once the bindings became familiar.

Does the WoW Forever beta have controller support?

Yes—the October 30 beta included a built-in Gamepad UI toggle, spell binding and friendly/enemy targeting.

Does WoW Forever have native controller support?

Yes—Forever provides its own gamepad HUD, targeting, casting, looting and menu navigation for XInput-compatible controllers.

Enable WoW Forever controller support, set up Steam Deck, bind spells, switch action bars and use targeting shortcuts; chat still needs a keyboard.
"url2x":"https://epiccarry.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Dina-avatar.webp"},"0":null,"1":"","2":"","3":"","4":"","5":"","6":"","7":"","8":"
["GET
