BfA Dungeons: Overview

Battle for Azeroth has launched with 10 dungeons, just as many as the start of Legion. WoW players were very excited to explore the new temples, tombs, and caverns and work their way towards the Mythic+. 

There are three types of difficulties in BfA Dungeons. Players that have finished leveling all the way through 1-110 unlock Normal dungeons. After reaching 120 you will unlock Heroic and Mythic difficulties. And if you want to gear yourself for BfA raids, your best bet will be to farm Mythic+ as it is the most efficient way to boost your average level of gear in World of Warcraft. They are plenty, you can do them in quick succession and they give you enormous amounts of loot per time spent.

In addition to being one of the most consistent sources of mid- and late-game loot, dungeons also provide plenty of resources that you can use for other aspects of the game. Here’s what WoW’s dungeons have always been famous for: 

  • gold; 
  • achievements; 
  • mounts and pets – the rare drop ones and those that you earn by completing achievements. 

There are also rewards that are unique for Battle for Azeroth. 

  • Azerite, which serves as BfA’s version of Artifact Power; 
  • Focusing Life Anima, which is required to get better Ranks of your Azerite Essences;

As we progressed through the zones of Kul Tiras and Zandalar, we took notes about every BfA dungeon on our way. Hopefully, it will make good reading for a new player and a veteran alike.

Horde Dungeons

Atal’Dazar

Atal’Dazar is a wonderful open-air dungeon that gives you the option to take on any of the first three bosses in any order you want. Great for Mythic+!

The Temple of Atal’Dazar takes you to the ancient troll sacred grounds to chase and kill some traitors from the Horde storyline. Although this does not make sense for Alliance players, there’s plenty of loot to plunder, so who cares, right? Read More

The Underrot

The Underrot lies deep beneath the swamps of Nazmir. It can be accessed through the Heart of Darkness. It is probably one of the main causes of anything nasty going on in this area. Obviously, it is the first place you’ll want to dismantle if you want to ensure the well-being of the tusky population in this area.

The dungeon looks quite creepy and messy. The corruption leaking out from whatever lies below is tainting the entire area. A place like that is sure to be infested by all sorts of nasty stuff. Read More

Temple of Sethraliss

The Temple of Sethraliss can be found in northern Vol’dun, a Horde 110-120 leveling zone. This dungeon is a resting place of an ancient snake Loa. Now, the place is infested with snakes and their masters, who are trying to put Sethraliss’s power to their use. Your party is tasked with putting a stop to their plans. And, of course, take all their possessions from their cold dead hands!

At the beginning of the dungeon, you have to choose to go left or right. Each way is littered with trash, and both of them will lead you to Adderis and Aspix, the first boss of this dungeon. Be careful and you’ll be able to kill them without pulling any additional trash that populates the boss room. Read More

THE MOTHERLODE!!

As you level up the Horde character 1-110 you’ll come to learn of The Motherlode, the dungeon located in the Isle of Kezan. In WoW BfA, you’ll get to revisit this area, populated by goblins. The entrance to this dungeon can be found in the Zuldazar zone.

The players are tasked to kill Mogul Razdunk, the leader of the Venture Co. and the last boss of this dungeon and retrieve the Azerite that was stolen from Trade Prince Gallywix. Read More

 

Alliance Dungeons

Freehold

So far, you may have got the impression that BfA dungeons are all about Azerite and corruption. Not at all! Sometimes, it’s about good old fashioned booty, as you’re sure to find in the Freehold. Once a safe haven for pirates and scoundrels alike, the changes in leadership seem to be bringing the cutthroats together under a single banner.

That’s probably not a good thing, so in you go to disrupt them as much as you can. Freehold is an open-air dungeon, which means that there are multiple ways to tackle each encounter. Read More

Shrine of the Storm

The Shrine of the Storm dungeon is found in the east of the Stormsong Valley. In the lore, The Shrine of the Storm is where both House Stormsong and the tidesages reside. It is a place of power located on a remote island right next to the shrine of Old Gods. A perfect setting for a nearly Lovecraftian plot that you will witness as you venture in.

Unlike inhabitants of other BfA dungeons, which (mushrooms and sharks aside) seem to like fire or lightning, the octopus-like K’thir that dwell in this one will mostly use water-based skills in their attempts on your life. Waycrest Manor

Waycrest manor takes the cake as the most unique and moody dungeon in BfA. The plot and setting in this one were clearly inspired by Darkest Dungeon. You are in search of Lord and Lady Waycrest, who mysteriously disappeared from their homestead not so long ago.

Once you arrive, you will find yourself trapped in a haunted house. There is a specific route through the dungeon every time you reset it, so prepare to get lost on your first few runs! Read More

Tol Dagor

Tol Dagor entrance is located in Tiragarde Sound. You will have to sneak in the prison, which is now controlled by a private company to whack some worgens. Rings a bell with some of the Alliance players? Rest assured, this is not just a Stockade revamped.

The first boss of the Tol Dagor is the Sand Queen. Do as your trusty DBM tells you and spread out as soon as she burrows into the ground. Aside from that, don’t kill drones that emerge from the traps while she’s on the surface and melt them down when she’s not. Read More

 

Mythic Only Dungeons (Pre-BfA 8.1)

King’s Rest

The King’s Rest lies behind Atal’Dazar. It will certainly be a place that you are going to want to visit. It even has its own TripAdvisor page. Rated 5 stars, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I’m dead serious, google it.

The first boss, The Golden Serpent, will cover a player with molten gold DoT, which has to be carried as far from the boss as possible. At some point in the fight, it will spawn an add that boosts the Serpent’s damage if it gets to him. Read More

Siege of Boralus

Prior to patch BfA 8.1, the Siege of Boralus was a Mythic-only dungeon. Horde players had to farm rep and complete their War Campaign to unlock it, while Alliance had an easy pass.

Operation: Mechagon Megadungeon

In patch 8.2, when it was first added in the game, Operation: Mechagon Megadungeon was a Mythic-only 8-boss dungeon. Players had to be level 120 to enter it and there was no Mythic+. It has been split into two parts a bit later down the line. In Patch 8.3 both wings are available on Mythic+ difficulty. There is also a hard mode for each boss, so, if you love tough fights, you have plenty of ways to crank the difficulty to 11. 

The first part is the outskirts of the dungeon and is an open-air area that you can progress through in any order you want. On the other hand, the Workshop is an underground gnome foundry with a set route.

Operation Mechagon – Junkyard

The Junkyard starts with trogg King Gobbamak and his subjects. Pesky troggs snitched some high-tech devices that were lying around, which will prove to be their undoing. The boss casts Charged smash at the tank. Everyone needs to help split the damage. Each player who gets hit with Smash gains an electrical Charge. Once the King summons a bunch of adds, carry this charge to one of the Shock coils to charge them. The coils will deal with the adds for you. Read More

Operation Mechagon – Workshop

The Workshop starts off with a fairly easy fight. You’ll find yourself locked in the arena with two enemies: the Platinum Pummeler and the Gnomercy 4.U. There is no point in focusing on the former just yet. Your tank will need to bring him under one of the hammers on the edge of the arena once in a while. Being hit by a hammer peels off some armor from the Pummeler. After four hits, you’ll be able to deal full damage to him.

Meanwhile, Gnomercy will chase and charge a random player of your party. Kite him as well, and get out of his way when he charges. This one takes full damage from the get-go, so you can go to town with the DPS while your tank works on the Pummeler. Read More
