Obsidian Sanctum Instance General Facts
Obsidian Sanctum is one of three instances, which were released within the first phase on October 6. The other two are Naxxramas and the Eye of Eternity. We have complete and detailed overviews for these raids, including loot tables. Check links to learn more.
Obsidian Sanctum is a black dragon’s lair and the only inhabitant is a huge drake, Sartharion by name. The intelligence reports, there are many twilight eggs here, and players should destroy them, defeating their guardians first.
As it was mentioned, Obsidian Sanctum has only one boss, unlike the absolute majority of raids. And this boss drops a part of Tier 7 gear. Players may find other parts in Naxxramas.

The fight difficulty and subsequent loot vary by either sparing or defeating the mini-bosses: the more spared, the harder is the boss fight, and the better loot drops. There are two difficulties for this raid – 10 and 25 people’s party. The loot also differs for both raid variations.
Luckily, there is no Attunement for this raid – players are welcome anytime.
A funny fact: even though this is a sort of cavern, there is no ceiling here.
The most important thing to remember. Watch your step, as the floor is lava.
Obsidian Sanctum Location
Obsidian Sanctum is located right in the middle of the Dragonblight zone, under a vast tower called the Wyrmrest Temple. You may go there using fly mounts, or a taxi. There is a neutral flight point with the same name. You may also ask someone to summon you, as there is a summoning stone. In case you are a pioneer, go South from Dalaran to the centre of the zone, following the Path of the Titans, until you see a lofty tower in the middle of nowhere.
Inside the raid, you will find a rounded area, divided into several parts by lava streams. The only boss waits in the middle, while its guardians spread around on separate islands.
The Boss
Apart from Sartharion, there are also three Twilight lieutenants in the Obsidian Sanctum: Tenebron, Shadron, and Vesperon. Players may either defeat each of them one after another, or pull the big dragon straight away. In the second case, all three guardians will join their master at that very moment, which will complicate the fight.
Due to an unwonted fight structure, this encounter has several ways to be finished. Each raid-party chooses the best way for them. Below you may read a brief description of Sartharion’s abilities, so you could think over your strategy and possible raid setup.
Ability | Description |
Flame Breath | The very basic fire attack. Has frontal-cone direction. |
Tail Lash | The dragon’s tail will take care of those who stand behind it. Stuns and damages players. |
Flame Tsunami | High and solid wall of lava that slows and gaps players with very unpleasant DOTs. |
Fire Cyclone | Small fire elementals spawn during the fight. These guys are not dangerous unless are hit by a previous skill. |
Void Blast | A puddle that spawns beneath the feet of a random player and damages anyone standing in the area. |
Tenebron | One of three lieutenants goes berserk and increases its damage dealt by around 500% after Sartharion reaches 25% of HP. |
Gift of Twilight | Sartharion will deal increased fire damage and will become immune to all incoming damage 90 seconds after pulling. |
Obsidian Sanctum Quest
Obsidian Sanctum has only one quest and it may be repeated every week. It is called Sartharion Must Die! You need to defeat Sartharion on either 10- or 25-player difficulty. The level required is 80. Talk to Archmage Lan’dalock in The Violet Hold, Dalaran, to start and return the quest. The reward is plus 250 reputation points with Kirin Tor.
Rewards
As long as there is only one boss in the raid, there aren’t many rewards of any type here. Below, we will examine all of them, starting with achievements.
Achievements
The achievement system is a large and divaricate structure. It has several sizable groups, each of which is also divided into smaller ones. Here we will mention only those which are connected to raids. There are four types of instance-related achievements in World of Warcraft:
- Challenge Achievements are given for completing certain challenges or tasks in the raid;
- Kill Credit Achievements, which are earned for defeating bosses;
- Meta Achievements are a combination of several minor achievements;
- Feats of Strength are a limited or one-time thing.
As long as there are two versions of Obsidian Sanctum, the achievements are also presented in two variations, for 10 and 25 ppl parties. Here we will mention only the 25 people ones; keeping in mind, they are practically the same for the easier variant.

Unique Loot
Sartharion has several truly unique items on its loot table and all of them are worth mentioning. Here they are.
Tier 7 hands tokens; two for a run, no matter how many people you have.
A Dragon Hide Bag – a 22-slot bag. Drop chance is 100%, which is great as everyone always lacks free space.
Sartharion drops two mounts with 100% chance. Reins of the Black Drake for the 10 ppl mode and Reins of the Twilight Drake for 25 ppl raid. Note that all three lieutenants should be still alive when you pull the boss; you won’t get any mounts otherwise.
Obsidian Sanctum Loot Table
As it was said, Obsidian Sanctum has only one boss and three guardians. The more lieutenants are left untouched by the time the fight with Sartharion begins, the more items players will get. That’s why the looting tables are slightly different. The general scheme looks like this:
For 10 people Raid
- 0 Drakes are left alive: You will gain no additional items;
- 1 Drake breathes: One additional item (item level 200);
- 2 Drakes: Two additional items (200 and 213 ilvl);
- 3 Drakes: Two additional items (213 and 226 ilvl) and a mount.
For 25 people Raid
- 0 Drakes are left alive: No additional items;
- 1 Drake: One additional item (ilvl 213);
- 2 Drakes: Two additional items (213 and 226 ilvl);
