An ornate stone portal crackles with blue and violet energy, broken glowing chains, and three luminous paths against a blurred purple backdrop.

A public test for the Talebound demo opens on the Patch 12.1.7 Player Test Realm from October 30 to November 1, 2026. Players do not need an active World of Warcraft subscription to log in and test the standalone roguelike mode. The testing window lets participants sample the opening scenario alongside three distinct story instances across three difficulty brackets.

What is included in the test build

The demo lets testers choose between solo play or partying up with friends to explore the opening section of Quillgrave. The test includes three difficulty settings: Normal, Veteran, and Heroic.

Content CategoryIncluded in PTR DemoReserved for Full Launch
StoriesRed Hollow, Darkhaven, Greenthistle Wood, Greywake's ExpeditionGrove of the Night Court
DifficultiesNormal, Veteran, HeroicMythic, which three of the four title achievements require

The opening scenario, Red Hollow, introduces the macabre world created by the Storyteller. Once through the introduction, three full tales become available:

  • Darkhaven: An isolated settlement, home to Lord Marshal Konrad von Sonnesheim and Blood Bishop Alexandre Dozsenc, surviving as the only place to survive a devastating plague that wiped out everyone beyond its borders.
  • Greenthistle Wood: The woodlands surrounding the settlements of Shady Hollow and Riverton, besieged by two witches, a giant, and predatory monsters.
  • Greywake's Expedition: An excursion across Greywake's Hill, an island where many have fallen to the herald Chathoa and the Hadal Tyrant Zzyg'th.

How the demo classes handle

Every class in Talebound shares universal mobility and defensive mechanics, enabling characters to double jump, dodge, and guard during encounters. Lesser enemies also flinch when attacked, making for dynamic combat.

Slayer

Combining melee blade strikes with firearms, the Slayer focuses on direct physical damage and spatial control:

  • Slash: A three-hit attack string hitting targets directly ahead, culminating in elevated damage and a stun.
  • Explosive Shot: A frontal shotgun blast that deals increased damage at close range and can be empowered.
  • Minefield: A defensive backward disengage that leaves behind an arc of slowing, damaging landmines.
  • Shrapnel Round: A projectile shot that ricochets between multiple targets.
  • Throwing Knives: An evasive repositioning throw that can interrupt your other animations.
  • Silver Bolt: An aerial strike targeting the enemy with the highest health in range.

Inquisitor

The Inquisitor wields holy magic and fire spells, offering options that maintain offensive pressure while on the run:

  • Purify: A progressive three-strike sequence hitting frontal enemies.
  • Condemn: Holy frontal damage that slows targets and can be cast while moving.
  • Denounce: A stationary casting attack that gains power the longer you remain in place.
  • Light's Wrath: Calls down an overhead sun to sear nearby monsters.
  • Rapture: Coats enemies in flames that detonate on activation.
  • Radiant Burst: A mobile fire projectile that causes an area explosion.

Witch

The Witch commands nature magic, curses, lightning, and summons to wear down hostile groups:

  • Brewing Storm: A three-part lightning sequence delivering heavy damage on the final hit.
  • Bubbling Cauldron: Spawns jumping frogs that explode with poisonous damage in a small area.
  • Feline Communion: Shifts the caster into a cat, releasing falling star damage and granting access to the Crooked Path moonlight teleport.
  • Winter Spiders: Sends out a spider cluster alongside an exploding brood mother.
  • Moonlight Ravens: Channels a seeking flock of ravens while moving.
  • Thorns: Summons ground spikes under the two closest enemies.

What comes next for Talebound

The demo closes after November 1, 2026. Blizzard stated that "several Talebound talents are still in progress, and fine-tuning is ongoing" during the test cycle.

The full mode arrives in Patch 12.1.7, introducing the fourth tale, Grove of the Night Court, alongside cosmetics, housing decor, mounts, and four new titles, three of them tied to completing Mythic difficulty on Talebound's new classes.
