The Heirloom Catalyst upgrades the Exotic crossbow so that direct hits with charged shots scorch targets, and Heirloom deals increased damage against scorched enemies. In practice, that means every charged bolt sets up its own damage buff, making follow-up shots and Solar synergies noticeably stronger once the Catalyst is fully Masterworked.
The Catalyst is tied to the Equilibrium dungeon and related objectives, similar to previous dungeon exotics: you first need to own Heirloom, then complete specific dungeon steps or puzzles and a dedicated quest (The Way Between) to unlock the Catalyst. After that, you must finish Catalyst progression (kills and activity completions) before the full effect and stat bonuses activate.
If you enjoy using Heirloom or run Solar builds that lean on scorch and debuff stacking, the Catalyst is mandatory. It makes each charged bolt both a damage source and a setup for bonus damage, improving single-target output and Champion control compared to the base version of the weapon.
Charging the Catalyst requires a substantial number of kills and completed activities with Heirloom equipped, which can be time-consuming if you only play casually. With this boost, all that Catalyst XP grind is handled for you, and you receive Heirloom in a fully completed, plug-and-play state.
