Apex Predator’s value compounds in exactly the situations where SMG and shotgun builds already excel — tight corridors, dense enemy clusters, aggressive push rotations. The debuff applies to every enemy in range simultaneously, the disorientation chains across kills, and the damage stacks accumulate fast enough in sustained close-range fighting to stay near cap throughout an encounter. The chest and backpack upgrades extend both the uptime and the area of the talent’s secondary effects, turning a strong base set into the definitive close-range DPS setup.

Buy Division 2 Hunter’s Fury Boost and get the close-range set that turns aggressive play into compounding damage — without farming the pieces between the sessions where you actually want to use them.
Apex Predator activates automatically on entry into combat — every enemy within 15 meters receives the debuff, which amplifies your weapon damage against them by 20% without requiring any additional action. When you kill a debuffed enemy, two things happen simultaneously: all other debuffed enemies within 5 meters are disoriented, and you gain a 5% weapon damage stack for 10 seconds. Stacks up to 5 times for a maximum of 25% additional weapon damage. In close-range endgame content with grouped enemies, the debuff radius covers most of the fight area and the kill chain keeps stacks near cap throughout.
The 2-piece bonus applies equally to both — +15% to each weapon class. The practical split comes down to engagement range and fire rate. SMGs maintain the debuff uptime more consistently through sustained fire at close-to-mid range, which keeps stacks accumulating faster. Shotguns extract more from the Armor on Kill and Health on Kill bonuses through burst damage on single targets. For dense enemy encounters in endgame missions and the Dark Zone, SMGs produce more consistent stack uptime. For elite target elimination, shotguns use the survivability bonuses more efficiently per trigger pull.
They address different parts of the Apex Predator system. The chest talent extends stack duration from 10 to 30 seconds — without it, stacks decay quickly between kills and the bonus resets before the next engagement begins. The backpack talent doubles the disorientation radius, which directly affects how many enemies are disrupted per kill and how much breathing room you get in close-range pushes. Running only one leaves either the uptime or the area control at base values. Both are required for the fully optimized Hunter’s Fury build to function at its ceiling.
