The best way to farm Splinters of Evil in bulk is the Hell version of the Prime Evil dungeons, which unlock at Torment 10 and are available at Torment 10+. For Soul Splinters, the best target farm is Escalation Nightmare Dungeons where you pick the Gem Reserve affix that matches the Splinter you want. Helltide multi-farming with Pandemonium Ruptures and Corrupted Roots, and the Labyrinth summoner-clone loop, are the efficient alternatives.

Bulk Splinters of Evil: Hell Prime Evil Dungeons

Defeating a Prime Evil can drop one of three Splinters of Evil: Diablo's Splinter of Terror, Baal's Splinter of Destruction, or Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred. Each Prime Evil has a story Capstone version tied to Season Rank and a repeatable Hell version.

The Capstones are the most accessible source of your first Splinters, since they scale to a fixed difficulty. Once you reach Torment 10, the repeatable Hell versions open up and are available at Torment 10+; if your build can handle them, they are the fastest way to farm Splinters in bulk, and they double as the game's best Mythic farm. Seasonal Reputation Caches also award Splinters, and the repeatable cache keeps awarding them after you finish the board, giving you a boss-free way to pick up the one you need.

Target-Farming Soul Splinters

Soul Splinters are socketable gems for jewelry, and you can equip up to three of them. There are eight in total, each with a power, a resistance and an associated element that matches a gem type:

  • Anguish (Andariel) — Fire Resistance — Ruby
  • Damnation (Skarn) — Shadow Resistance — Amethyst
  • Hellfire (Na-Krul) — All Resistances — Diamond
  • Lies (Belial) — Cold Resistance — Sapphire
  • Mother (Lilith) — Physical Resistance — Skull
  • Pain (Duriel) — Poison Resistance — Emerald
  • Sin (Azmodan) — Lightning Resistance — Topaz
  • Black Soulstone — All Stats, no associated gem

They come in four rarities: Lesser Splinter (Magic), Splinter (Rare), Greater Splinter (Legendary) and Abyssal Splinter (Unique). Combining five Splinters of the same type in the Horadric Cube upgrades their rarity — 5 Magic into 1 Rare, 5 Rare into 1 Legendary, 5 Legendary into 1 Unique.

The targeted method works because the chests in a Nightmare Dungeon with a Gem Reserve affix can drop the Splinter matching that element — a Topaz Reserve dungeon can drop Splinters of Sin. Escalation Sigils make this stronger, since each dungeon increases the potency of these affixes for more Splinter drops. In practice: take every War Plan node leading up to Branching Pathways, which lets you choose the bonus for each floor of an Escalation Nightmare Dungeon and keeps you stocked on Escalation Sigils from boss drops. Then pick your target gem's reserve on every floor you get the option — Sapphire Reserve for a Splinter of Lies — and open the Horadric Chests, which will very likely drop the Splinter tied to that resistance, usually in Magic or Rare quality. The dungeon boss is also very likely to drop the same Splinter, and can drop it as high as Legendary. If you run short on Sigils, amalgamate five regular Nightmare Dungeon Sigils into one Escalation Sigil in the Horadric Cube.

Helltide Multi-Farming

Pandemonium Ruptures are rifts in the active Helltide zone that constantly spawn large numbers of enemies when activated, making them one of the most effective farming methods. Find Ruptures, preferably two or more stacked together, activate them, and plant Corrupted Roots at the same time to draw in even more enemies.

The War Plan nodes that carry the strategy:

  • Corrupted Roots — Whisper Caches can contain Corrupted Roots, and planting them attracts enemies
  • Roots of Power — enemies drawn by Roots have +1 Monster Power and yield double rewards in Helltides
  • Headrotten Feast — Headrotten Bosses drawn to the Roots have +1 Monster Power and drop a Whisper Cache
  • Grim Retribution — completing a Whisper can trigger an ambush whose enemies can reward a Collection of Chaos Whisper Cache
  • Colossal Foe — Whisper Ambushes sometimes include bosses that drop a Greater Collection of Chaos Whisper Cache
  • Malignant Invasion — Varshan can appear in ambushes and drop an Ancestral Collection of Chaos
  • Tainted Shrines — while empowered by a Shrine, slain enemies grant double progress to Threat Level
  • Hated Foe — maximum Threat enemies gain +1 Monster Power
  • Meat Brothers — two Butchers ambush you instead of Hellborne
  • Hellmouth — Hellwyrms unleash extra enemies

Writhe and Rot makes Hellwyrms always spew Maggots with +1 Monster Power and sometimes a Pang of Duriel, and Bursting Brood makes Maggots and Pangs of Duriel drop Boss Trophies. The Splinter of Lies adds 100% increased Gold and Crafting Material drop rate plus 25% bonus Experience, and the Splinter of Damnation increases Monster Power by 1 and grants bonus experience per Elite Pack slain. The method supplies Splinters, Keys, loot and reputation for bonus caches, which can contain the Prime Evil Splinters needed for Uber Tristram.

The Labyrinth Clone Loop

Once you unlock Torment 8 you gain access to the Labyrinth, which you can enter by clicking the dungeon directly on the map or through the view on map button on seasonal rank seven. Head straight for the summoner in the lower section, inside cave level 10 around the middle of the map, ignoring monsters and chests. Damage the summoner until his health drops to around a third or lower; at low health he starts summoning groups of clones. Kill only the clones and leave the real summoner alive, then wait for the next wave and repeat.

The summoner usually summons around 12 clones per wave, and each clone gives around 130 Splinter reputation, so one wave is roughly 1,560 reputation. With fast clone clears you can max out an entire Splinter reputation track in under an hour, and the reputation goes to whichever Prime Evil Splinter you currently have, so you can switch Splinters and keep farming the same boss. Killing the real summoner ends the farm, so dismiss your mercenary first and avoid uncontrolled AoE, chain attacks, minions and passive damage; a single-target skill is the safest option. If the summoner drops too low, stop attacking and let him kill you — the encounter resets and you can restart the fight without rerunning the dungeon. The loop also keeps paying out repeatable reputation rewards after you have maxed your rank.

How to Switch Prime Evils

Your Prime Evil choice is not locked in: to change which power you bear, obtain the Splinter for the Prime Evil you want — Splinter of Terror for Diablo, Splinter of Hatred for Mephisto, Splinter of Destruction for Baal. Get it from a Chapter Capstone, a Hell variant run, or a reputation cache, and you can change your active power and its reputation track. Each Splinter modifies different endgame activities: Diablo's Splinter of Terror affects Helltide and Infernal Hordes, Baal's Splinter of Destruction affects the Undercity and Lair Bosses, and Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred affects the Pit and Nightmare Dungeons, while all three modify the Tree of Whispers. Progress on each track is saved separately, so swapping back and forth does not erase your work on either one. Only one Prime Evil Splinter can be active at a time.

If you would rather not run the repeat reputation loops yourself, our Splinter Rank Leveling Boost raises your chosen Splinter's reputation track to the rank you pick.
