Updated October 21, 2026 for the run-up to the WoW Forever launch on November 4, 2026. Written from the beta; details can change at launch.
Fishing in World of Warcraft: Forever is a secondary profession that levels strictly based on the total number of fish you hook, meaning harder waters offer no additional skill gains per catch. Apprentice and Journeyman ranks are learned directly from city trainers, Expert requires a vendor manual purchased in Booty Bay, and Artisan unlocks through Nat Pagle's quest at level 35. With the game launching globally on November 4, 2026, preparing your route through the beta test builds will give you an immediate edge for Cooking materials, campfire buffs, and raw gold.
Fishing rank requirements
Raising your skill cap requires advancing through four discrete training tiers, each gated by your character level and current profession progress.
| Rank | Max skill | Required skill | Required character level | How to learn |
| Apprentice | 75 | 1 | None | Profession trainer |
| Journeyman | 150 | 50 | 10 | Profession trainer |
| Expert | 225 | 125 | 20 | Expert Fishing – The Bass and You book |
| Artisan | 300 | 225 | 35 | Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme quest |
The book Expert Fishing – The Bass and You is sold for 1 gold by Old Man Heming on the docks of Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale (/way 27.4 77.0) to both factions.
Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme is picked up from Nat Pagle in Dustwallow Marsh (/way 58.6 60.0). Completing it requires traveling to four specific open-water locations without pools to land quest-only catches: Feralas Ahi in Feralas southeast of Dire Maul (/way 63.5 53.6), Misty Reed Mahi Mahi along the east coast of Swamp of Sorrows, Sar'theris Striker off the west coast of Desolace, and Savage Coast Blue Sailfin along the western shores of Stranglethorn Vale.
If you want your tradeskill maxed out without spending hours casting, the WoW Forever Fishing Boost can take the leveling grind off your hands.

Leveling route 1-300
Because catch rate determines leveling speed, fish in waters where your skill meets or exceeds the zone threshold so bites never get away. One creator's route at level 60 completed the entire 1-300 journey in roughly 6 to 7 hours.
Skill 1 to 75
Fish in any starting zone, such as Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Durotar, or Tirisfal Glades. Attach a Shiny Bauble while your skill is below 25; once you hit 25, catches in starter zones land on every cast without a lure. Visit a trainer at skill 50 and character level 10 to learn Journeyman.
Skill 75 to 150
Move to any faction capital city, including Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus, Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, or Undercity. These waters ensure a 100% catch rate from skill 75 onward without requiring lures. Before exceeding 150, travel to Booty Bay to read the Expert manual once you reach character level 20 and skill 125.
Skill 150 to 225
Fish in Dustwallow Marsh or Stranglethorn Vale, with Dustwallow generally more accessible for Alliance and Stranglethorn Vale for Horde. A skill of 225 is required to guarantee a 100% catch rate in these territories, so maintain lures while leveling through this bracket. If you do not care about raw gold profits, capital cities can still be fished through this tier without losing catches.
Skill 225 to 300
Complete the Artisan quest at character level 35 and skill 225. Afterward, continue leveling in higher-level regions such as Tanaris, Feralas, Azshara, Un'Goro Crater, or The Hinterlands, which require 300 skill for guaranteed catches. End-game zones like the Eastern Plaguelands, Silithus, Deadwind Pass, Burning Steppes, and Winterspring require 425 skill to prevent escapes, so keep high-grade lures active whenever casting there. Staying in open water rather than chasing pools is the efficient way to power-level fishing.

Equipment and lures
Lures, specialized poles, enchants, and consumables add temporary or permanent skill bonuses that prevent lost fish in high-level zones.

For those looking to build initial capital ahead of mount purchases, pairing these spots with routes from our WoW Forever Gold Farming Guide helps maximize early income. The One Ring drops from fishing in test builds, and its catch rate seems noticeably higher than in previous versions to many players who found it around Stormwind and Orgrimmar.
The waterwalking boots are gonna be pretty nice for any class incapable of doing that, and probably be very helpful for fishing in areas with large enemy presence like Hyjal.

Forever fishing features and campfires
WoW Forever integrates Fishing into the camping system, allowing anglers to place craftable objects next to campfires. All camp objects share a 3600-second cooldown.
- Fish Bowl: Learned at skill 20 from trainers, requiring 1 Raw Brilliant Smallfish and 1 Empty Vial. It grants nearby resting players an 8% increase to all stats, which is exclusive with Blessing of Kings.
- Fishing Rack: Learned at skill 140 from a blueprint dropped by Gelihast in Blackfathom Deeps, requiring 2 Simple Wood, 1 Crystal Vial, and 2 Raw Mithril Head Trout. It adds fishing lures, provides all Fish Bowl benefits, and allows catching uncommon fish for 3600 seconds.
- Fishing Hut: Learned at skill 300 via Blueprint: Fishing Hut, requiring 5 Simple Wood, 2 Bolts of Runecloth, and 1 Seasonal Fish Steak. It provides the Fish Bowl aura, provides lures, and enables catching rare fish for 3600 seconds.
Campfire buffs open access to bloated fish in open water, which contain gems, rings, and necklaces. Raw fish like Firefin Snapper, Oily Blackmouth, and Stonescale Eel proc two to three fish per catch in Forever.
Account progression includes the Legacy system, where perks like Working Overtime raise tradeskill gain chances by 4% per rank across 5 ranks, and Luremaster grants a 25% chance to catch an extra fish per rank while using a lure. In addition, the Master Angler tournament in Stranglethorn Vale now rewards the first 50 turn-ins each week rather than only one, granting the Arcanite Fishing Pole and an Extravagant Extravaganza Coin to every winner. Native controller support is also included for casting and reeling. Handling the line with a gamepad feels relaxing to many players, though the interact prompt's range occasionally requires recast attempts. Binding the interact key allows mouse-free casting with a single keybind, an approach some players favor alongside one-button addons.
