What Is Dune: Awakening?
Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival RPG set in an alternate timeline where Paul Atreides never existed. You manage water and heat exposure, avoid sandworms, build bases, craft gear, and eventually get pulled into the political tug-of-war between the Great Houses.
Dune Awakening Console Release Date
Dune: Awakening launched on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 22, 2026, alongside Update 1.5 on PC. The console versions use a console-tailored UI and controls rather than a straight PC port.
Console players get two graphics modes: Performance Mode runs at 60fps at Dynamic 4K, and Quality Mode at 30fps at Dynamic 4K. PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X render at a higher native resolution in both modes and add enhanced visuals in Quality Mode.
Xbox players get the game with Xbox Game Pass and Play Anywhere, so progression carries over between Xbox consoles, the Microsoft Store PC version, the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Game Pass members got the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition at 20% off. On PC, Dune: Awakening is Steam Deck verified and GeForce Now supported.
The physical PlayStation 5 edition is distributed by Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and by Solutions 2 GO across North and South America, while Spike Chunsoft publishes the digital and retail editions in Japan on October 29. Deluxe and Ultimate owners on console began their journey five days early, on September 17.
Single-Player Mode Explained
Update 1.5 adds a full single-player mode covering the entire game, all its content and all its features. On first boot you choose between single-player and multiplayer, and an existing multiplayer character cannot be transferred into single-player, so you create a new one.
Three preset difficulty levels are available, or full manual customization. The Deep Desert is fully available with all its content and challenges, but the map never resets and your buildings are never wiped, and the Coriolis Storm remains as a weather event that is less destructive and no longer kills you instantly. The Landsraad endgame simulates other players and other guilds, with cycles adapted to solo play, so the faction conflict keeps progressing even without your participation. The Exchange acts as a vendor with a large selection of items, and both Arrakeen and Harko Village can be visited. The Cartographer skill now extends your Fog of War reveal radius, and player start locations are limited to a smaller area for improved pacing.
Settings you can customize include sandstorm auto-spawn, resource harvesting rate multipliers, experience rate multipliers, base building piece limits, item durability, base decay rate, sandworm auto-spawn, Coriolis storm auto-spawn and what drops on death.
PC players can host a free self-hosted server for friends or a community, with up to 40 concurrent players, no ongoing fees, and you supply the machine, though the feature is still experimental. Self-hosting is demanding, requiring Windows Pro with Hyper-V, 20GB or more of memory and 100GB of SSD storage, so official servers, rented private servers or single-player are the easier routes.
Character-Centric Progression and Transfers
The update moves the game from a server-centric model to a character-centric one, making it easier to manage and move a character between eligible worlds. You manage all your characters from the main menu and choose where to deploy each one. Characters can move from official servers to eligible private or self-hosted worlds, but they cannot return to official servers afterwards — that move is one-way. Single-player characters are separate and cannot cross over later. Inventory, bank contents, Solari, saved bases and saved vehicles all transfer with the character.
Before you move anything, back up your base and vehicles, move valuables into your inventory or bank, and make sure your character is in Hagga Basin. Transfers run on a token system — one per account, refreshing every seven days — so plan around the cooldown.
Book One Story Finale
Update 1.5 shipped the conclusion to the Book One story, hours of story content that close the game's immersive and cinematic opening arc. The campaign rolled out in pieces: Chapter 2 added Act 3 and the first half of Act 4, Chapter 3 completed Act 4, and the September update delivered the final act.
PvE, PvP, and the Landsraad Overhaul
PvP is now completely optional and the entire game can be played PvE. The Deep Desert endgame has separate PvE and PvP instances, with the PvP instance carrying greater risk and greater rewards. Hagga Basin and Shipwrecks are PvE zones, so you can explore and farm without worrying about ambushes. PvP in the Deep Desert is riskier but pays a 2.5x resource yield.
The Landsraad faction-vs-faction endgame was rebuilt into a mission-driven framework that works equally well for multiplayer PvE and single-player. Resource turn-ins have been replaced by repeatable missions across combat, crafting, gathering, exploration and sabotage, with party sharing and a missions overview. Missions also cover dungeons and time trials and reward Solari, XP, faction standing and House Scrip, and completing "The Art of Making Friends" unlocks the system. You progress through twenty ranks from outsider to Atreides Envoy or Harkonnen Enforcer, unlocking powerful rewards, with ranks 6 through 19 advancing through Landsraad missions.
Specializations — Crafting, Gathering, Exploration, Combat and Sabotage — unlock through Spice Melange and affect crafting speed, inventory space and resource yields. Landsraad bonus rewards use Mnemonic Recollections, a daily charge system of 5 per day that stacks up to 35, so regular play is rewarded without forcing daily logins.
What's Changed Since Launch
Update 1.5 reworked the systems that cost players progress. You can save your base and recover your vehicles, upkeep taxes are gone entirely, and the death penalty is reduced. Destroyed vehicles can be restored with a vehicle backup tool for a small Solari cost, and the same tool relocates an intact vehicle on the same map. Base snapshots let you restore your build if it is damaged. Power still protects structures from weather decay, but the recurring tax system is scrapped.
New progression systems include Augmentations and Specializations, and action gameplay and combat, especially melee, have been refined. Update 1.5 added new locations — Smuggler's Run, Blushing Caverns, The Broodworks, Wreck of Tyche, The Old Quarry, Ruins of Tsimpo and Wind Pass — plus dynamic encounters, new contracts and a new in-game radio station. Earlier chapters added five Imperial Testing Stations plus a scalable one at the Old Quarry, along with Dual Blades and the Pyrocket. Quality-of-life work includes expanded bank storage, character re-customization, instanced loot and offline notifications. The Scattergun Rampage Enhancement augmentation can now be applied to Drillshot FK7 weapons as well as GRDA44 weapons.
Beyond the September Update: The Polar Cap Map
The next update in development is the Polar Cap, a free, sizeable new survival map arriving later this year. It adds new survival mechanics, new locations and resources, new loot and craftable items, and a new standalone storyline.
