First of all, there are all kind of so-called currency items in the game, most of which are used to modify your gear in some way. This “some way” most of the time means tinkering with your gear’s modifiers, or affixes.
Exalted Orbs are one such currency. It can be used exclusively on your Rare items, adding a random modifier to any of them. But note that Rare items can have up to six modifiers, so your Exalted Orbs won’t work on a Rare item with six modifiers (affixes).
