It’s not a serious combat platform — it’s a learning vessel. Use it to understand how cannon rotation, broadside timing, and ship-to-ship maneuvering works before you invest heavily in upgrades.

The Ketch emphasizes speed and approachable handling. For solo players or co-op crews of two, it remains serviceable into mid-game if kept well upgraded, but its low crew capacity and thinner hull limit its endurance in extended fights.

Brig — What is the Best Mid-Game Ship in Windrose?

The Brig is the natural progression from the Ketch and the ship most players will spend the majority of their time on. It balances broadside firepower with enough crew space for boarding specialists, making it the most versatile option in the current build. The Brig handles fleet PvE encounters — multiple enemy ships simultaneously — better than the Ketch by a significant margin.

For co-op crews of three to four players, the Brig is the sweet spot during mid-game: enough firepower to contest harder sea encounters, enough mobility to avoid getting surrounded, and enough crew slots to split roles between cannoneers and boarders.

Frigate — What is the Best Ship in Windrose?

The Frigate is the late-game ship unlocked through the Brethren of the Coast faction. It’s the strongest vessel currently in the game — built for endurance battles against bosses that demand sustained damage output and multiple repair cycles. Its firepower exceeds the Brig significantly, and its hull takes considerably more punishment before collapsing.

The tradeoff is resource demand. The Frigate requires a full crew to operate effectively, and upgrading it to peak performance is expensive. Don’t rush toward a Frigate and neglect the upgrades that keep it functional — an under-equipped Frigate is worse than a well-upgraded Brig.

How Does Naval Combat Work in Windrose?

Your ship fires from three independent sides: left broadside, right broadside, and front. Each side has its own set of cannons with its own independent cooldown. Rotating between sides during a fight is the primary skill expression in naval combat — switching sides keeps your fire rate consistent and forces you to stay moving, which reduces incoming damage from enemy volleys simultaneously.

What Should You Know Before Your First Naval Fight in Windrose?

• Drink Grog before engaging. Grog buffs crew damage, reload speeds, and resilience for the duration of the fight. Skipping this step on harder encounters is a noticeable handicap.
• Aim low when firing. Cannon shots in Windrose have a tendency to go high, hitting masts or sails rather than hull. Aim for the waterline on enemy ships and adjust upward only if you’re consistently undershooting.
• Use chain shot on enemy masts and sails. Chain shot inflicts a meaningful speed debuff when it connects with masts or sails, and it deals bonus damage to those components specifically. Slowing an enemy ship early gives you more favorable positioning for the rest of the fight.
• Rotate sides constantly. Don’t sit on one broadside until it reloads — switch to a different firing angle while the first set recharges. This also forces you to move, which makes your ship a harder target.

Naval combat is mandatory for island-to-island progression and an under-equipped ship is a guaranteed death against harder sea encounters.

The standard 12-Pounder cannons your ship starts with are functional but insufficient for anything beyond early coastal encounters. Upgrade them before venturing away from your starting island.

Tortuga — What Does the Faction Hub Offer For Ship Upgrades?

Tortuga is the main town and faction hub in Windrose. Two NPC types matter most for ship progression:

• Provisioners sell ship armor, upgraded cannons, and Naval Tactics buffs after you’ve built faction reputation. Naval Tactics function similarly to Grog for the ship — providing increased damage, health boosts, and HP regeneration for your vessel during fights.
• Bounty Agents let you trade Pirate Insignias dropped by defeated enemies for faction reputation. That reputation is the gate to purchasing better items from Provisioners. Prioritize Buccaneers faction first for Deck Insignia access, then Smugglers of Port Royal for Naval Tactics unlocks at Rank 3.

Gear purchased from Provisioners can be upgraded and ascended further using resources found while exploring — so don’t treat a Tortuga purchase as the end of an item’s development.

What Happens When Your Ship Sinks in Windrose?

When your ship sinks, you lose the fight — but not everything. You can recover your ship at your Wharf using materials, and crucially, you won’t lose any cargo. The catch is that you can’t access any stowed loot until the ship is repaired. When a ship goes down, summon your sailboat immediately and flee the area. If the enemy pursues and destroys your sailboat, you lose any valuables you were personally carrying in your inventory at that moment — that is the loss to avoid.

What Are the Best Ways to Farm Ship Upgrade Materials?

Mining copper is the most consistent early method. Copper deposits appear in caves on most islands — bring a pickaxe and a torch. Destroying shipwrecks on beaches drops planks, nails, and Sea Brass. Looting ruins rewards Tumbaga Ingots used for higher-tier upgrades and ascensions. Steel Nails, specifically, are looted from sunken ships and unlock the Combat Repair Kit for your vessel.
