You get Scatter Signal by running the Starcrossed Exotic Mission, reached through Vanguard Ops and the Pinnacle Ops playlist, with the Classic Collector boon modifier switched on. That modifier forces the activity to drop legacy rewards, so the run hands you old weapon patterns and armor instead of standard Vanguard loot. The farm has no weekly lockout, so you can repeat it as often as you like.
How to get Scatter Signal
- Open the Director and go down to Vanguard Ops, then select the Pinnacle Ops playlist node at the top.
- Pick Starcrossed from the rotation of returning Exotic missions.
- Choose Customize before launching.
- Click the star diamond icon in the bottom right corner to open the reward boon modifier.
- Toggle it from standard Ops rewards over to Classic Collector.
- Launch the mission on any difficulty and complete it.
Classic Collector states that the mission offers standard Ops rewards to all Guardians, and that those who own access to the original content also get legacy rewards. Legacy drops lack seasonal power and gear tiers, which is the trade-off for filling out red borders.
Requirements
You must own the original expansion tied to the mission to access its loot pool. Scatter Signal's source mission requires Lightfall.
Any difficulty works for the red border farm. The mission also has Standard and Expert versions, and the Expert version awards a Catalyst upgrade for the crafted Exotic weapon.
Scatter Signal overview
Scatter Signal is a Strand Rapid-Fire Fusion Rifle that is craftable, last updated in Season 23, and originally part of the Season of the Wish loot pool. It is the only Rapid-Fire Strand Fusion in the game.
It sits at A-Tier for PvE and C-Tier for PvP. Slice applies a 40% debuff to enemies' outgoing damage, and the Dragon's Vengeance origin trait boosts its stats when you reach low health.
Its perk pools are:
- Perk 1: Perpetual Motion, Overflow, Loose Change, Surplus, Enlightened Action, Encore, Slice.
- Perk 2: Under-Over, Adagio, Deconstruct, Kickstart, Controlled Burst, Attrition Orbs, Hatchling.
For PvE, Fluted Barrel with Accelerated Coils, Overflow or Slice, Controlled Burst or Attrition Orbs, and a Charge Time masterwork is the all-around roll. For PvP, Arrowhead Brake with Projection Fuse, Perpetual Motion, Kickstart or Under-Over, and a Range masterwork is the pick.
Upgrading to Tier 5
Once you have extracted enough red borders to craft the weapon, you can reshape it at the Enclave and push it up to Tier 5 once it passes level 30. The final tier grants a stat bump to the weapon's barrels, magazines and origin traits.
The upgrade costs 36,000 Glimmer, 17 Enhancement Cores, 6 Enhancement Prisms and 2 Ascendant Alloys.
Other legacy missions
Each returning Exotic mission drops a different set of seasonal gear, so pick your node by the pattern you still need:
- Seraph's Shield: IKELOS shotguns and submachine guns.
- Presage: Austringer hand cannon from Season of the Haunted.
- Starcrossed: Scatter Signal fusion rifle from Season of the Wish.
- Vox Obscura: Season of the Risen gear.
- AVALON: Season of Defiance gear.
- Encore: Episode Echoes weapons.
- Shattered Throne: Season of the Lost patterns.
The Pinnacle Ops node also lists Kel's Fall among the selectable missions. If you would rather have the weapon handled for you, a Destiny 2 Scatter Signal Boost covers the farming runs.
