Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Beta Guide: Everything You Actually Need to Know

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s beta is live from August 21 through September 1, 2026, giving players an early look at Infinity Ward’s new Multiplayer, the Entrenched Campaign mission, Kill Block, revamped movement and gunplay, Apex Attachments, and more. Early Access runs first for pre-orders and beta-code holders, followed by a free Open Beta with additional content, Ground War, Warzone Resurgence, and Nintendo Switch 2 support.

This is the 2026 Modern Warfare 4, not 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Below, we’ve broken down what’s playable, what’s changing throughout the beta, what carries over to launch, and the systems actually worth paying attention to.

Access, Dates, and the Boring-But-Important Stuff

Two windows, and platform access isn’t identical across them:

Switch 2 only joins for Weekend Two. Preload opens August 26 at 9am PT — worth planning around if your connection isn’t exactly fiber-fast.

Before queuing up: an Activision account is required, and a linked phone number may be too depending on platform. A stable connection is required throughout, mandatory updates can drop mid-beta, and PC needs TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and a 70 GB SSD minimum for RICOCHET Anti-Cheat.

Key PC specs:

“Runs” and “runs well” are different promises. The beta also tests Shader Preloading, meant to cut shader stutter — the kind of fix nobody notices until it’s missing.

Campaign: Entrenched

Entrenched is the first-ever playable campaign mission in a Call of Duty beta: a ground assault to defend a nuclear power station during a full-scale invasion of the Korean peninsula, with South Korean soldiers and embedded Marines holding collapsing front lines.

The campaign follows squad members Park, Jay, Cho, and Moon, in a war that eventually spreads to New York, Paris, and Mumbai. Captain Price runs his own parallel war that intersects with the main plot, and the Traffic teaser confirms Price working alongside Valeria during the Paris section.

Multiplayer Maps and Modes

Launch maps were Rooftops, Silkworm, Transit 213, and Kill Block; Cachette and Inflation joined August 22 with map voting, and Lotus plus 3v3 Kill Block Gunfight arrived August 23. As of the final Early Access day, rotation includes Search & Destroy, Inflation, Transit 24/7, and 3v3 Gunfight; 10v10 Gunfight is paused until Weekend Two. Lithium is still part of the wider beta pool, and twelve Core maps ship at full launch.

Announced modes: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Search & Destroy, Kill Confirmed, Gunfight, plus newcomers Hijack and Inflation.

Weekend Two adds 24v24 Ground War: Combat Outpost and 44-player Warzone Resurgence on Zodiac. Capturing an Outpost gives your team a spawn point, and completing Reinforce objectives there unlocks a Local UAV, a JLTV airdrop, and eventually a Light Tank.

Kill Block

Kill Block isn’t procedural — it’s built from modular Slabs recreating classic maps (Crash, Ambush, Killhouse) alongside new ones like Snow Block and Trench, with over 500 combinations from just three Slabs per match. Fixed sector markers keep callouts consistent regardless of combo, and most Slabs have their name spray-painted on a wall so you’re not orienting from memory alone.

Gunfight on Kill Block runs 3v3 or 10v10, one life per round, identical randomized loadouts, sides swapping each round, and the Combo shuffling every two. An unresolved round spawns an Overtime Flag; capture it to win, or the healthier team takes it by default. First to six rounds wins.

Movement and Gunplay

Movement is fluid and grounded without going full Omnimovement: Mantle Slide, Mantle Momentum, Mantle Steering, Supine Slide, Pipe Climb, Fast Pipe Slide, Hang Shimmy, Hang Lean, and Climbing Jump. A graded Mobility Course (Beginner through Expert, C- to S) lets you drill it all before embarrassing yourself in a real match.

Gunplay runs on Ballistic Authority: no bloom, rebuilt recoil, and VFX masking that keeps muzzle smoke out of your sightline. A companion Shockwave system means surviving nearby a blast doesn’t guarantee staying upright — concussive force can knock you down, which changes how hard you push after an explosion.

Weapons, Loadouts, and Apex Attachments

22 of the 33 launch weapons are beta-accessible — 19 Multiplayer weapons (14 in Weekend One), plus three locked to Default Loadouts or Entrenched. Worth knowing: the Oris 8.6 bolt-action Marksman Rifle unlocks at Level 14, the Signal .50 Sniper Rifle’s full Create-a-Class unlocks at Level 30, and the PPSh-41 SMG unlocks early at Level 11. Attachments now unlock once and carry across every compatible weapon, easing the grind on fresh guns.

Create-a-Class opens at Level 4 with up to 12 custom loadouts. Operators, weapons, equipment, Perks, Field Upgrades, and Killstreaks can vary by class, while Operators and Killstreak packages can also apply across all loadouts. Perks use Pick 3 — one per slot, including Quick Fix, Ninja, Fast Hands, and Blood Rush. Operators are purely cosmetic; Finishing Moves are customized separately.

Domination, the Nuke, and Killstreaks

Domination runs 6v6 across A/B/C flags, first to 200. The Tactical Nuke sits at 30 consecutive kills without dying (Killstreak kills don’t count) and ends the match instantly. The Killstreak list runs ten deep: UAV, Care Package, Bomb Glider, Impact Warhead, Crossfire, Combat Drone, Artillery Beacon, Wheelson, Missile Salvo, and Attack Helicopter.

MW4 also adds Smart Streaks, where objective play — Domination captures, Hardpoint time, planting the Data Spike — feeds your next streak alongside kills.

Prestige and Camos

Prestige splits into two paths: Classic resets level unlocks and Create-a-Class progression for boosted XP and exclusive rewards, while Regular restarts you at Level 1 but keeps everything you’ve unlocked, with a smaller reward pool. Camo progression spans Multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone, leading to three Mastery Camos per mode — nine total for completionists.

Beta Rewards

Weekend One caps at Level 20; Weekend Two raises the ceiling to 30. Eight rewards along the way include the Level 4 Through the Paces Emblem, Level 12 Meonjeo Weapon Sticker, Level 20 Dread Tiger Reece Skin, and the Level 30 Beta Forged Weapon Blueprint — though Activision’s own documentation currently disagrees on which weapon that blueprint is for, so we’re leaving it unconfirmed until Weekend Two. Eligible rewards carry into the full game; everything else resets when the beta ends. Weekend One also throws in the current Black Ops 7 Season 05 Battle Pass free (or 10 Tier Skips if you already own it).

The Actual Verdict

Beta dates, platforms, and playlists can shift during testing, so check Infinity Ward’s live patch notes for the current rotation. Weekend One gets pre-order players the earliest crack at Entrenched and Multiplayer; Weekend Two is the better pick for Level 30 progression, Ground War, Warzone Resurgence, or Switch 2 access. Entrenched itself stays available throughout. Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch 2 — no PS4 or Xbox One this time — with digital pre-orders getting Campaign Early Access from October 16.
