How does Vault Breaker Work?
What Happens When You Load Into Vault Breaker?
You drop into Cryo Archive — Marathon’s hardest map — without your personal loadout. Instead, every player receives a free Sponsored Kit from the Vault Breaker Armory tab in the Events section. At the start of the event, this kit provides only basic weapons, equipment, and consumables. Everything you find during a run stays in the mode — gear does not exfil back to your main account.
Your objectives inside a run: push through the Vault locations within Cryo Archive, fight progressively harder waves of UESC forces, and attempt to reach the Compiler, the same final boss from standard Cryo Archive runs. The vault puzzle mechanics from normal Cryo Archive carry over — solving them is part of what generates Vault Data.
Cradle and Faction upgrades from your main account remain active inside Vault Breaker. Your seasonal stat investment doesn’t disappear when you switch modes.
What is Vault Data, and How Do You Earn It?
Vault Data is the event-exclusive currency. The only things that leave Vault Breaker with you are Vault Data and designated event rewards — everything else stays behind.
Two tiers with different earn conditions:
Tier 1 Vault Data — two sources:
- Solving Vaults successfully and exfilling. You must extract to keep it; dying with Tier 1 Vault Data before exfil means losing it.
- Killing a UESC Commander. This pays out after the run, regardless of whether you exfil or not — the one source of guaranteed return, even on a failed attempt.
Tier 2 Vault Data — one source only:
- Solving consecutive Vaults in a single run and then successfully exfilling. Both conditions are required. Clear multiple Vaults back-to-back without dying, then get out alive.
The UESC Commander drop is the most underappreciated mechanic in the mode. Because it pays out on run failure, targeting Commanders in runs where you know extraction is unlikely gives you something to show for a lost session. Don’t finish a bad run empty-handed — always route for a Commander kill before your position collapses.
What is the Sponsored Kit and How Does It Work?
The Sponsored Kit is Vault Breaker’s persistent progression system, which enables it to function as a roguelite rather than a standard extraction mode. Unlike main Marathon runs, where your loadout resets based on what you bring in and extract, the Sponsored Kit upgrades carry forward between every Vault Breaker session until the event ends.
Upgrade the kit by spending Vault Data in the Vault Breaker Armory. Three upgrade directions are available:

Implant selection matters once your kit is at a point where build diversity is available.
What Does the Vault Breaker Armory Sell?
Beyond Sponsored Kit upgrades, the Vault Breaker Armory sells items that transfer directly to your main Marathon account:
- Weapons — gear for use in standard extraction modes outside Vault Breaker
- Equipment — consumables and tools for regular runs
- Cryo Key Templates — usable in standard Cryo Archive runs
- Prestige Gear — high-tier items claimable once per event only; once they’re gone, they’re gone for the duration
Two important restrictions on the Armory:
- Weekly caps apply to some of the highest-tier rewards. You can only buy a limited quantity per week, regardless of how much Vault Data you’ve accumulated. Plan your spending across the two-week window rather than dumping everything in week one.
- Prestige items are one-per-event. If you claim a Prestige item, that’s the only copy you get from Vault Breaker. They do not restock.
What are the Codex Challenges in Vault Breaker?
Four Codex challenges run alongside the event, each rewarding cosmetics on completion. Specific challenge requirements haven’t been detailed beyond Bungie’s confirmation of four challenges with cosmetic rewards. What is the Best Strategy for Vault Breaker?
- Week one priority: upgrade weapon quality first. Better weapons directly accelerate Vault clearing speed, which means more Vault Data per session and faster kit upgrades across the remaining week. The first few runs on a basic starter kit will feel underpowered — push through them and invest Tier 1 Vault Data into weapon upgrades before anything else.
- Always route for a UESC Commander kill on bad runs. When a run goes sideways — squad wiped, extraction cut off, Vault chain broken — don’t extract empty. Find a Commander before the run ends and guarantee yourself at least some Tier 1 return. The Commander payout on a failed run is the floor, not the ceiling.
- Tier 2 requires consecutive Vault clears in a single run. Don’t attempt this until your Sponsored Kit is upgraded enough to sustain through multiple Vaults without dying. A failed attempt at Tier 2 that ends in death before exfil is a complete loss of that run’s currency investment.
- Don’t overspend on Prestige items in week one. The weekly cap on high-tier items means spreading purchases across both weeks is more efficient than front-loading. Prestige items being one-per-event means identifying which ones you actually want before spending is worth taking the time.
- Bring your best Cradle and Faction investment into the mode. Your seasonal progression from the main game stays active. A well-developed Cradle stat spread gives you a meaningful edge in AI combat without requiring any Vault Breaker-specific investment.
