The factions that gate your progression are almost entirely Piastre-based, and Tortuga’s merchant hub only starts working in your favor once you have a reliable supply flowing in.

The game doesn’t explain this well at launch. A large portion of players in Windrose’s first week sailed to Tortuga with full cargo holds and couldn’t find a single buyer. The reason: Faction Buyers are not in Tortuga. The hub is for reputation management, buying gear, and the Smuggler currency exchange — not for offloading trade goods. How Does Ship Boarding Work for Piastre Farming?

The targeting rule is simple: look for hostile vessels with a golden chest icon above their nameplate. These are transport ships and haulers — Blackbeard Haulers specifically are the primary target — carrying actual cargo rather than just combat loot. Ships without the chest symbol are worth engaging if you want Insignias or are clearing a route, but they’re not the Piastre source.

The boarding process:

1. Engage the target ship with cannons — bring it down to roughly 20% health without sinking it. Aim for sails and masts with chain shot to slow it rather than hull shots that risk sending it under
2. Pull alongside the disabled vessel and press Spacebar to initiate boarding — your crew throws grappling hooks and crosses over
3. Fight breaks out on the enemy deck. The most effective position is staying on your own ship and firing from the railing rather than jumping across — this keeps you safe while your crew handles the deck fight

The Smuggler Provisioner at their main base (also accessible in the main Tortuga area) offers a currency exchange in both directions:

• Sell Guineas: 1 Guinea = 20 Piastres
• Buy Guineas: 50 Piastres = 1 Guinea

The sell direction (Guineas → Piastres) is the only one worth using. Buying Guineas with Piastres is a terrible exchange rate and should be avoided unless you urgently need a specific building plan or cosmetic.

Letters of Favor from side quests also convert to reputation points (10 points per Letter), but they’re less efficient than Old Salt Insignias. What Should You Not Spend Piastres On Early?

• Merchant Contracts too early. Contracts cost Piastres upfront and are genuinely useful for sourcing rare materials like Hide and Sulfur in the mid-to-late game. In the first few hours, that same Piastre investment is better spent on boarding equipment and ship upgrades. The upfront cost is not the problem — it’s spending currency before you have the return rate to absorb it.
• Buying Guineas. The 50 Piastres per Guinea exchange rate is punishing. Earn Guineas through buried treasure and world quests; never buy them with Piastres unless you have a specific time-critical cosmetic or building plan you need immediately.
• Unlocking ships before you can build them. The blueprint cost is not where ships get expensive — the materials are. Unlocking a Frigate blueprint before you’ve stockpiled the required materials wastes Piastres and blocks them from being spent on upgrades that actually improve your current session income.
• Selling Silver or Gold Ingots to vendors for small Piastre returns. Both are crafting materials for jewelry that provide significant character stat boosts.
