Updated October 18, 2026 for the run-up to the WoW Forever launch on November 4, 2026. Written from the beta; details can change at launch.
Mining in World of Warcraft: Forever lets you gather raw ores, extract gems, and smelt ingots required by professions like Blacksmithing and Engineering. In testing ahead of the November 4, 2026 launch, miners can level from 1 to 185 through smelting at capital forges, except between 140 and 155 where they must mine, before finishing the climb to 300 out in the world.
Mining rank requirements
Before you can advance your tradeskill beyond each bracket cap, you must visit a profession trainer and meet the required character and tradeskill levels. The beta client caps active character progression below Artisan levels, meaning tiers past 225 reflect extracted client thresholds.
| Rank | Tradeskill cap | Required tradeskill | Training cost |
| Apprentice Mining | 75 | None | 10 copper |
| Journeyman Mining | 150 | 50 | 5 silver |
| Expert Mining | 225 | 125 | 45 silver |
| Artisan Mining | 300 | 200 | 5 gold |
If you want the profession ready without running every deposit circuit yourself, the WoW Forever Mining Boost can take the gathering and smelting off your hands.
Smelting path: 1 to 185
Smelting ores at a forge grants skill points up to skill 185, allowing you to bypass contested low-level nodes directly inside major cities. However, no smelting recipe offers skill gains between 140 and 155, requiring you to mine nodes in the world for those 15 points.
- 1–65 (Smelt Copper): Smelt 130 Copper Ore into Copper Bars, saving at least 60 bars for bronze later.
- 65–75 (Smelt Tin): Smelt 60 Tin Ore into Tin Bars, which will turn grey for skill gains at 75.
- 75–100 (Smelt Bronze): Combine 60 Copper Bars and 60 Tin Bars into 120 Bronze Bars.
- 100–125 (Smelt Silver): Smelt roughly 70 Silver Ore into Silver Bars.
- 125–140 (Smelt Iron): Smelt roughly 35 Iron Ore into Iron Bars until the recipe stops offering reliable gains.
- 140–155 (World Mining): Gather Iron Deposits or higher-level starter veins, as no smelts grant points in this window.
- 155–185 (Smelt Gold): Smelt approximately 60 Gold Ore into Gold Bars, which turn grey at 185.
Beyond 185, smelting will no longer advance your Mining skill, forcing all further leveling into the open world.
World mining leveling route: 1 to 300
When gathering in the world, each node provides at most one tradeskill point regardless of how many swings it takes to deplete. An orange node guarantees a skill-up, staying guaranteed for 25 points past its minimum requirement before gradually tapering off. Beta testing added Poor Copper Veins in starter hubs that yield only a single hit to accelerate early tradeskill gains.
1 to 65: Copper
Work through any starting territory, such as Durotar, Westfall, Dun Morogh, or Loch Modan. Early questing in racial starter areas offers the "Mining for Dummies" book as a quest reward, teaching Apprentice Mining without visiting a trainer.
65 to 125: Tin and Silver
Transition through Loch Modan, the Wetlands, Duskwood, Redridge Mountains, or Silverpine Forest. Tin Veins become available at 65, while rare Silver Veins unlock at 75.
125 to 175: Iron and Gold
Focus on Arathi Highlands, Alterac Mountains, Stranglethorn Vale, or Thousand Needles. Iron Deposits become mineable at 125, while Gold Veins unlock at 155. Tin nodes turn grey at 165 and Silver nodes turn grey at 175.
175 to 245: Mithril and Truesilver
Head into The Hinterlands, Badlands, Searing Gorge, or Alterac Mountains. Mithril Deposits become accessible at skill 175. Truesilver Deposits and Dark Iron Deposits unlock once you hit skill 230.
245 to 275: Small Thorium
Farm Small Thorium Veins across Winterspring, Un'Goro Crater, Azshara, or the Burning Steppes. Small Thorium nodes turn yellow at 270 and green at 295.
275 to 300: Rich Thorium
Complete your tradeskill progression by targeting Rich Thorium Veins in Winterspring, Eastern Plaguelands, Un'Goro Crater, or Azshara. Smelt Thorium unlocks at 250 but is grey from the start, so it offers no skill-ups.

Apprentice trainers in starting zones only teach the first rank. Capital city and neutral outpost trainers can teach Journeyman, Expert, and Artisan tiers once level prerequisites are met.

Skill gear and camp utilities
Gear bonuses lower the base tradeskill required to open nodes, letting you tap high-value deposits earlier. Carrying bonus skill items helps secure orange-tier nodes early in contested launch environments.
- Miner's Cape: A back item dropped by Miner Johnson in the Deadmines providing +2 Mining skill.
- Goblin Mining Helmet: An engineering-crafted helm granting +5 Mining skill.
- Enchant Gloves – Mining: Permanent glove enchantment providing +2 Mining skill.
- Enchant Gloves – Advanced Mining: Permanent glove enchantment providing +5 Mining skill.
- Smelting Pants: Reduces the cast duration of Smelt Copper, Tin, Bronze, and Silver by 25%.
- Rockslicer: A consumable-style item with 30 charges enabling non-miners to harvest Copper, Tin, Silver, and Iron nodes.
Miners can also craft deployment structures for player campsites:
- Lodestone: Learned at skill 20 from trainers, granting resting players melee Attack Power comparable to Blessing of Might.
- Rock Garden: Requires skill 140 to plant, generating a harvestable basic ore node over time.
- Molten Foundry: Unlocked at skill 300 via blueprint, serving as a portable forge needed for select high-end recipes.
New endgame ores and scarce gems
In the WoW Forever beta, gathering nodes introduce scarce materials that drop alongside regular ore, including Pyrite, Bauxite, and Pitchblende. Several new bars appear in late-game recipe lists:
- Azerothium Bar: Trained at skill 275 and smelted from two Pitchblende and one Coal.
- Heavy Thorium Bar: Smelted at skill 300 from Heavy Thorium Ore at a Molten Foundry.
- Legionite Bar: An endgame bar produced through Alchemy transmutations using Heavy Thorium Bars.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does smelting grant Mining skill all the way to 300?
No, smelting recipes stop providing skill increases at level 185 after Gold Bars go grey. All progression from 185 to 300 must be finished by mining mineral deposits in outdoor zones and dungeons.
Where do you get the Miner’s Cape in WoW Forever?
The Miner's Cape drops from Miner Johnson inside the Deadmines and grants +2 Mining skill to characters level 17 and above.
What is the new Azerothium Bar used for?
Azerothium Bars are smelted at 275 tradeskill using Pitchblende and Coal to craft new Blacksmithing weapons introduced in the Forever client.
