Updated October 14, 2026 for the TBC Anniversary realms.

Leveling Engineering from 1 to 375 in TBC Classic runs in two halves: the Classic stretch to 300, then the Outland stretch to 375 once you train Master Engineering. You can learn Journeyman, Expert, and Artisan Engineering from city trainers, so only the last 75 points send you to Outland. Pairing the profession with Mining lets you farm your own ore instead of buying everything on the Auction House.

Engineering trainer ranks

Journeyman, Expert, and Artisan Engineering are all available from trainers in the capital cities, so you no longer have to travel between different trainers for each rank. Ask a city guard for the Engineering trainer and the location is marked on your map.

Master Engineering trainers in Outland:

Gnome characters get +15 Engineering skill from their racial passive, which keeps recipes orange 15 points longer and can save gold.

Materials to buy first

Buy or farm everything up front, because skill-ups are not guaranteed and you may need slightly more or less than the listed amounts. The two shopping lists disagree on several counts, so treat these as the Classic-stretch baseline and expect to top up.

Copper Bar66
Coarse Stone45-60

For the Outland stretch you need Fel Iron Bar, Adamantite Bar, Khorium Bar, Motes and Primals, plus Netherweave Cloth. A third estimate puts the TBC half at 430 Fel Iron Bar, 144 Adamantite Bar, 54 Khorium Bar, 10 Mote of Fire, 20 Mote of Earth, 18 Primal Fire and 30 Netherweave Cloth.

Goblin or Gnomish at 200

At 200 skill and level 30 you choose between Gnomish and Goblin Engineering, and each has its own quest chain. Most recipes made by one specialization can be worn by both, though some items require the matching specialization to use.

Gnomish Engineering

Start with The Pledge of Secrecy from Tinkmaster Overspark in Ironforge or Oglethorpe Obnoticus in Booty Bay, then complete Show Your Work by turning in 6 Mithril Tube, 1 Accurate Scope and 2 Advanced Target Dummy.

  • Gnomish Battle Chicken: still used for the Battle Squawk buff it gives a group.
  • Gnomish Poultryizer: a Stamina trinket tanks want, with an on-use effect that can backfire.
  • Nigh Invulnerability Belt: popular in PvP for the shield it grants.
  • Ultrasafe Transporter: Gadgetzan: teleports you to Gadgetzan every 4 hours.
  • Ultrasafe Transporter: Toshley's Station: Gnomish Engineers teleport to Blade's Edge Mountains every 4 hours.

Goblin Engineering

Start with The Pledge of Secrecy from Nixx Sprocketspring in Gadgetzan, then complete Show Your Work by turning in 20 Big Iron Bomb, 20 Solid Dynamite and 5 Explosive Sheep.

  • Goblin Jumper Cables XL: a high chance to resurrect a dead party member, and only Goblin Engineers can make them.
  • Goblin Rocket Launcher: a Stamina trinket whose on-use effect gives high threat on one mob and stuns it.
  • The Bigger One: the strongest Engineering bomb in TBC Classic, craftable only by Goblin Engineers.
  • Super Sapper Charge: a stronger Goblin Sapper Charge, again Goblin-made only.
  • Dimensional Ripper – Everlook and Dimensional Ripper – Area 52: teleports to Everlook and to Area 52 every 4 hours.

1-300 craft path

Keep the Arclight Spanner and the Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor, since both are tools used by later recipes. Before starting, purchase a Blacksmith Hammer from the Blacksmith supply vendor close to your trainer.

  1. 1-30: 60 Rough Blasting Powder from 60 Rough Stone.
  2. 30-50: 30 Handful of Copper Bolts from 30 Copper Bar.
  3. 50-51: 1 Arclight Spanner from 6 Copper Bar.
  4. 51-75: 30 Rough Copper Bomb from 30 Copper Bar, 30 Handful of Copper Bolts, 60 Rough Blasting Powder and 30 Linen Cloth.
  5. 75-95: 45 Coarse Blasting Powder from 45 Coarse Stone.
  6. 95-100: 15 Coarse Dynamite from 45 Coarse Blasting Powder and 15 Linen Cloth.
  7. 100-105: 5 Silver Contact from 5 Silver Bar.
  8. 105-125: 30 Bronze Tube from 60 Bronze Bar and 30 Weak Flux.
  9. 125-140: 30 Heavy Blasting Powder from 30 Heavy Stone.
  10. 140-150: 15 Whirring Bronze Gizmo from 30 Bronze Bar and 15 Wool Cloth.

Then 150-160 with 15 Bronze Framework, 160-175 with 15 Explosive Sheep, 175-176 with the Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor, 176-195 with 60 Solid Blasting Powder, 195-200 with 7 Mithril Tube, 200-215 with 20 Unstable Trigger, 215-235 with 40 Mithril Casing, 235-250 with 20 Hi-Explosive Bomb, 250-260 with 30 Dense Blasting Powder, 260-285 with 30 Thorium Widget and 285-300 with 18 Thorium Shells. Keep at least 15 Dense Blasting Powder for later.

300-375 craft path

Train Master Engineering in Outland before you start this half. Three recipes carry the Outland stretch: Schematic: White Smoke Flare at 335 for 6 gold, Schematic: Adamantite Rifle at 350 for 8 gold, and the dropped Schematic: Field Repair Bot 110G for levels 370-375.

  • Schematic: White Smoke Flare: sold by Wind Trader Lathrai in Shattrath City, Captured Gnome in Zangarmarsh, Feera in Exodar and Yatheon in Silvermoon City.
  • Schematic: Adamantite Rifle: sold by Viggz Shinesparked in Shattrath City, Feera in Exodar and Yatheon in Silvermoon City.
  • Schematic: Field Repair Bot 110G: dropped by Gan'arg Analyzers in Blade's Edge Mountains, north and south of Ogri'la, and reaching them requires flying.
  1. 300-320: 114 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts, 52 Fel Iron Casing and 17 Elemental Blasting Powder, all used later.
  2. 320-325: 7 Fel Iron Bomb from 7 Fel Iron Casing, 14 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts and 7 Elemental Blasting Powder.
  3. 325-335: 30 Adamantite Frame from 120 Adamantite Bar and 30 Primal Earth.
  4. 335-355: White Smoke Flare from Elemental Blasting Powder and Netherweave Cloth; the recipe is green for most of this stretch, so the count is approximate.
  5. 355-360: 5 Khorium Power Core from 15 Khorium Bar and 5 Primal Fire.
  6. 360-370: 15 Adamantite Rifle from 45 Fel Iron Casing, 30 Adamantite Frame and 60 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts.
  7. 370-375: 5 Field Repair Bot 110G from 40 Adamantite Bar, 40 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts and 5 Khorium Power Core.

The last recipe is yellow at 370, so you may need one or two more crafts to finish.

What Engineering gives you

Engineering is a strong pick for tanks because it offers high-stamina trinkets early, and the crafted goggles are useful for every class and role. It also supports goldmaking on the side.

  • Flying Machine Control: a 60% flying speed mount.
  • Turbo-Charged Flying Machine Control: a 280% flying speed mount.
  • Zapthrottle Mote Extractor: pulls motes from the gas clouds across Outland for fast Primal farming.

The epic crafted goggles are strong early and can be upgraded later. If you would rather not farm the ore and components yourself, an TBC Anniversary Engineering Boost has the materials handled and levels the profession to 375 for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much gold does 1-375 Engineering cost?

Schematic: White Smoke Flare costs 6 gold and Schematic: Adamantite Rifle costs 8 gold. Leveling Engineering is described as expensive, and farming your own materials with Mining saves a lot of gold.

Can I level Engineering without Mining?

Correct, but without Mining every material must be purchased from the Auction House, so Mining is the pairing that is recommended.

Where do I learn Master Engineering?

From the Outland trainers: Lebowski and K. Lee Smallfry for Alliance, Zebig and Mack Diver for Horde, or Xyrol at Area 52 for either faction.
