FFXIV Beastmaster problems right now come down to one thing: the job's only real content is the Crucible of the Unbroken, and that mode is a grind with balance issues serious enough that the first Crucible rankings season was postponed. Beastmaster is a limited job added in patch 7.56, so it cannot be played like a normal job, and its job questline runs directly through the first three Crucible boards. If you want the job's story, you are clearing that content; if you want the leaderboard rewards, you are waiting.
What Beastmaster actually is in patch 7.56
Beastmaster arrived with patch 7.56 as a limited job, like blue mage. It can join duties with other players in preformed or unrestricted parties, but some duties stay inaccessible, and retainers cannot be assigned the job. It also gets no role actions anywhere, so no Second Wind, Bloodbath or Arm's Length. Its job quests start with "Strangers in the Wood" in New Gridania, which requires a Disciple of War or Magic at level 50, and later steps require clearing boards in the Crucible.
The Crucible is the whole job
The Crucible of the Unbroken is a solo, roguelite-style duty exclusive to Beastmaster, unlocked at level 30 and entered by speaking to Lauda in the Central Shroud. It is the primary gameplay focus for the job aside from capturing beasts, and it is required for the job quests past level 30. There are five boards: the three Boards of the Unbroken, which the job questline runs through, and two Master's Boards that unlock afterwards. A run gives you a roster of 10-15 familiars, but only three can be taken into a given battle and only one summoned at once.
Why players are frustrated
The scoring system rewards not engaging with the mode. Bonuses favor clearing with only three familiars rather than the permitted 15, skipping campsites, feeding, coins and gear, and sticking to a single familiar type. That pushes leaderboard chasers away from tailoring a roster to each fight, which is the point of the mode. Beastmaster's TP-building is also too slow to be useful in many fights, so selective Parting Blow use to skip mechanics beats building a max-level combo. Beast leveling is a major pain with no way to speed it up, and the fights are puzzle encounters where an optimal path and tactic always wins, which makes repeated runs static.
Workarounds that help
- Bring a full set of level 30 gear before your first board; attempting it undergeared ends badly.
- Use level-appropriate or sync-down gear for the first two boards, then Beastmaster gear kept upgraded for the last three.
- Take poison resistance from shops or chests before the last boss of the second Master's Board, where something like Angel Robe trivializes it.
- Use meals outside the Crucible on higher difficulties to boost HP and offense; eating inside does not restore you to your new maximum HP.
- Split camp healing deliberately: with two familiars available you can heal yourself for 90%, yourself and one familiar for 45%, or yourself and two for 30% each.
- Suspend progress on a cleared space to save a run; forfeiting erases it and restarts you at the beginning of the board.
- Level familiars by running boards, since rank raises their Crucible attributes up to a maximum of 25.
Rewards and rankings
Third-degree clears are the hard requirement for the best rewards, including the Unbroken Endgame achievement and the Beastmaster's Earrings. The highest difficulty carries a seasonal leaderboard where the top 300 players per region earn the Tourmaline Golem mount. Season One was set to begin September 24, 2026 and run until patch 7.58, but the start was postponed. The official reasoning was that Beastmaster's combat balance and gameplay mechanics issues made ranking results unfair to judge. Preseason follows the ranking period and temporarily prevents ranking participation, with Season Two beginning after it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Beastmaster without the Crucible?
Not for its story. The job questline runs directly through the first three boards, so finishing it means clearing them.
Why was the Crucible rankings season postponed?
Balance feedback on Beastmaster's combat and reports of gameplay mechanic issues made it difficult to judge whether ranking results reflected the intended balance.
How long does beast leveling take?
There is no way to speed it up, so it means grinding puzzle fights repeatedly until your familiars reach the ranks a board expects.
Do I need third degree for the mount?
Yes. Ranking scores only count when Crucible Mode is set to the third degree and you check the rankings box, and the top 300 per region earn the Tourmaline Golem. If the beast rank grind is what is holding you back, an FFXIV Beastmaster Leveling Boost can cover that progression for you.
