Beastmaster arrives in Final Fantasy XIV on September 8 with Patch 7.56, bringing a new limited melee job built around taming wild beasts, assigning them to Battlehorns, and rotating between their unique abilities in combat. Following the Live Letter XCIII deep dive, we now have a much clearer picture of how the job, its Instinctual Combo system, and Crucible of the Unbroken will work.
In this guide, we cover:
- Beastmaster’s release date and unlock requirements
- How taming and the Master’s Bestiary work
- Battlehorns, Beast Actions, and Borrow abilities
- The Instinctual Combo system
- Crucible of the Unbroken Boards, beast ranks, Feed, and difficulty tiers
- Leveling preparation from Level 1 to 50
- Gearing, glamour, and launch preparation
- Everything still unconfirmed before Patch 7.56

Release Date and Unlock Requirements
Beastmaster starts at Level 1 with an initial cap of 50, fighting with a one-handed axe and shield. It’s a melee DPS role, but officially a limited job—the same category as Blue Mage—and can’t progress the main scenario.
To unlock it, register Dawntrail on your service account, have a Disciple of War or Magic at Level 50, and complete The Ultimate Weapon (A Realm Reborn). You don’t need to have played through Dawntrail’s story—having the license registered is what counts. Beastmaster won’t be available on the Free Trial, and Square Enix said the resources devoted to it pushed back the next Blue Mage update.

How Taming and the Master’s Bestiary Work

Beastmaster captures wild beasts by weakening them in combat, then converts them into an aetherial form for the Master’s Bestiary rather than using a physical trap. Recruitment is tied to your level: previews indicate that targets above your level may be unavailable to tame, while lowering a target’s HP is said to improve capture odds. Both details still await final confirmation.
Beasts can reportedly be recruited from overworld zones, dungeons, trials, and alliance raids. A solo alternative may also allow players to spend Crucible currency to obtain certain duty-related beasts without capturing them directly. Recruitment is not necessarily a competition, either: multiple Beastmasters can reportedly obtain the same target from a single encounter.
A tracking action, whose English name is still unconfirmed, helps identify recruitable targets and their level differences. Beasts are divided into eight classifications, including Undead and Cursed Tools, while certain sentient or mechanical enemies are excluded from taming.
Every beast you obtain is recorded in the Master’s Bestiary and can be assigned to one of three Battlehorns. Each beast provides different abilities and utility effects, so your active trio changes how you fight—especially in Crucible, where matching abilities to enemy weaknesses matters.
Battlehorns and Beast Abilities

Beastmaster assigns three beasts to separate Battlehorns, summoning one at a time and rotating between them as cooldowns allow. The in-combat cooldown is reportedly 90 seconds, while swapping outside combat appears unrestricted.
Four core Beast Actions have been shown in previews, although some English names remain provisional:
| Action | What it does |
| Parting Blow | Executes a powerful AoE, then returns the beast to its horn. |
| Trick | Commands the beast to use its Instinctual Skill. |
| Tempered Release | Commands the beast to perform its unique action. |
| Borrow | Lets the Beastmaster use an action from the active beast’s classification. |
Borrowed abilities appear to persist after switching beasts until you Borrow again, allowing you to retain utility such as interrupts or physical-damage reduction. Beast selection also determines your offensive options: Coeurl offers lightning AoE and paralysis, Slime provides roots, and Ziz brings AoE petrification. Coeurl’s reported lightning-resistance reduction can also set up Behemoth’s attacks, making the right trio depend on the encounter rather than a universal best lineup.
How the Instinctual Combo System Works

Basic weapon skills build the Beastmaster’s TP, while the active beast generates its own. These resources power Instinctual Skills—four for the Beastmaster and one per beast. Previews suggest beast TP is pooled across the equipped companions and damage scales with the amount spent, but exact thresholds remain unconfirmed.
Chaining the Beastmaster’s and beast’s Instinctual Skills creates an Instinctual Combo. Either order works, but following the affinity sequence clockwise around the gauge deals more damage; repeating an affinity grants a smaller bonus. Rally and Rallying Cheer refill the respective gauges to help maintain the chain.
At Level 50, previews describe a Level 3 combo tier: build affinity through Level 2 chains, then use opposing attributes at a full TP charge for a stronger burst. Exact attribute names, charge thresholds, and final English terminology remain unconfirmed.
Want to reach Beastmaster’s Level 50 cap without spending hours on the leveling grind? Our FFXIV Beastmaster Leveling Boost covers your selected target level, job quests, and the Instinctual Combo abilities unlocked along the way, with all items, resources, and Gil earned during the service kept on your account.
Crucible of the Unbroken

Crucible of the Unbroken unlocks at Level 30 and serves as a leveling and progression route for both Beastmaster and their beasts. Its tabletop-style Boards combine tactical encounters, roster management, and run-specific rewards.
- Boards and party selection: Assemble a roster of roughly 10–15 beasts and choose three per battle based on enemy weaknesses, or use the recommended lineup. Boards feature bosses, elite encounters, recovery spaces, treasure, and shops, with routes that force choices between rewards and survival.
- Pet survival and enmity: Inside Crucible, beasts have their own HP and enmity and do not automatically dodge telegraphed AoEs. Snarl directs enmity to the active beast, while Challenge draws it to the Beastmaster. Swap, dismiss, or mitigate to protect your companions, and keep a summon in reserve for dangerous mechanics. Normal field pets use a separate survivability system.
- Run economy and scoring: Board layouts are reportedly fixed, while encounters, shops, and treasure vary between runs. Beast Coins reset after each run and can be spent on survival resources or saved for a reported score bonus. The exact scoring formula remains unconfirmed.
- Temporary loot and consumables: Treasure offers run-specific Beast Gear, including Ring of Sacrifice, which revives the Beastmaster by sacrificing the active beast. Temporal Sand reportedly allows a battle restart, while Beast Potions restore beast HP. Feed strengthens beasts within classification-based satiety limits.
- Permanent rewards: Job quests and Bestiary completion are said to unlock hairstyles, minions, orchestrion rolls, and glamour, with some rewards potentially tradable. Exact acquisition methods and item names remain unconfirmed.
- Beast ranks and gear upgrades: Beasts can reach Rank 25, increasing their Crucible stats and unlocking an alternate appearance. Separately, artifact gear upgrades reportedly improve the Beastmaster’s item level and companion stats outside Crucible. The exact upgrade-material terminology remains unresolved.
- Difficulty tiers and rankings: Previews suggest all gear upgrades can be earned on Normal difficulty, while harder Degrees or Beast Path tiers accelerate progression and add more demanding mechanics. Seasonal rankings offer a rare mount, but the precise qualification rules, scoring method, and reward details remain unconfirmed.
Leveling Preparation
- FATEs, appropriate duties, and Party Finder groups substitute for Duty Finder roulettes, which are restricted for limited jobs—confirm the rules before relying on unsynced runs.
- Recruiting for your Bestiary and completing job quests are part of the intended leveling path, not a side activity.
- Food’s 3% EXP bonus won’t carry the grind, but it’s cheap insurance.
- FC Heat of Battle actions and Squadron Battle Manuals are standard boosts worth checking.
- Crucible becomes a genuine leveling route at 30.
Existing EXP rings/earrings have established level ranges, but Beastmaster compatibility isn’t confirmed—hold off recommending a specific setup.

Gearing and Glamour Preparation
UI hints point to Striking armor, Slaying accessories, and existing shields, but the final table, compatibility, and stat priorities are unconfirmed. Ironworks Striking/Slaying is a possible Level 50 option if that holds, but saving Poetics is safer until compatibility is confirmed. For glamour, the job gear gives a horned, fur-trimmed look; Warg or Paglth’an sets are alternatives, and The Emperor’s New Shield could hide the off-hand if shields end up compatible.
Need Gil ready for equipment, consumables, or Market Board purchases once Beastmaster’s gear options are confirmed? Buy FFXIV Gil – you can choose the amount you need, with manual delivery coordinated around your server and availability.
Once Beastmaster’s Level 50 equipment options are confirmed, our FFXIV Gearing Boost can help you obtain a gear set tailored to your job and budget, including your selected weapons, armor, accessories, and the materials earned during the service.
Future Beastmaster Updates
A higher level cap and expanded Bestiary are intended, without a committed schedule, alongside further Blue Mage updates in 8.x. A duo Crucible mode, pet battles, and eight-player content are only under consideration based on feedback—not confirmed features.
What’s Still Unconfirmed

- Unlocking and taming: Exact unlock NPC and location, the complete 50-beast list, and final capture rules, including level restrictions and HP-based success rates.
- Combat mechanics: Final English action names, TP thresholds, Level 3 combo attributes, and the once-per-summon restriction on Tempered Release versus Borrow.
- Equipment and duties: Final gear, stat, and shield compatibility, item-level limits, and the complete Duty Finder and PvP restrictions.
- Crucible progression: Board and encounter counts, Beast Coin scoring, Degree/Beast Path terminology, and whether Beast Cores and Faded Remnant of Resilience are the same material.
- Rewards and rankings: Permanent reward sources and currencies, leaderboard qualification and scoring, mount details, and season dates.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Beastmaster coming to FFXIV?
Beastmaster launches in Final Fantasy XIV on September 8, 2026, alongside Patch 7.56. It will arrive as the game’s second limited job after Blue Mage.
How do you unlock Beastmaster in FFXIV?
You must own and register the Dawntrail expansion, complete the A Realm Reborn main scenario through The Ultimate Weapon, and have at least one Disciple of War or Magic at Level 50. Beastmaster then starts at Level 1.
Where does the Beastmaster unlock quest start?
The exact unlock NPC, quest name, and starting location have not been confirmed yet. Square Enix has only confirmed the account, story, and Level 50 combat-job requirements ahead of the Patch 7.56 notes.
What level does Beastmaster start at, and what is its level cap?
Beastmaster starts at Level 1 and has an initial level cap of 50. Its job quests, open-world taming, and Crucible of the Unbroken provide the main progression paths.
Do you need the Dawntrail expansion to play Beastmaster?
Yes. Dawntrail must be registered on your service account before you can unlock Beastmaster, even though the prerequisite main scenario completion only extends through A Realm Reborn.
Is Beastmaster available on the FFXIV Free Trial?
No. Because Beastmaster requires ownership of the Dawntrail expansion, it will not be available to Free Trial accounts.
What does being a limited job mean for Beastmaster?
Beastmaster follows its own progression and content rules rather than functioning like a standard melee DPS job. It cannot be used to advance the main scenario, and it has a separate Level 50 cap, collection system, and solo activity.
Its complete Duty Finder, premade-party, PvP, raid, and exploration-content restrictions have not yet been published.
Can Beastmaster use the Duty Finder or enter dungeons and raids?
Square Enix has not confirmed Beastmaster’s complete Duty Finder and matchmaking rules. As a limited job, it is expected to face restrictions similar to Blue Mage, but the exact list of available dungeons, raids, trials, and other duties should be confirmed in the Patch 7.56 notes.
How do you tame beasts as Beastmaster in FFXIV?
Beastmaster weakens wild beasts in combat before attempting to capture them. The exact capture action, required health threshold, success-rate formula, and other conditions remain unconfirmed.
Beasts above your current Beastmaster level are harder to catch. Group taming is supported, but each player’s capture progress is handled separately.
How many beasts can Beastmaster capture and use in combat?
There are 50 beasts in the initial launch roster, and all of them can be obtained solo. Some will be captured directly in the open world, while beasts connected to multiplayer duties may instead come from solo rewards.
For regular combat, you assign three beasts to three Battlehorns and rotate between them one at a time. In Crucible of the Unbroken, you bring a wider roster of roughly 10 to 15 beasts and choose three for each battle.
What weapons and gear does Beastmaster use?
Beastmaster fights with a one-handed axe and shield. Patch 7.5 interface observations suggest that it may use Striking armor, Slaying accessories, and existing shield categories, but Square Enix has not published the final equipment table or stat priorities.
An Augmented Ironworks Striking and Slaying set may be useful preparation if you have spare Poetics, but it is not confirmed as best-in-slot gear.
How do Battlehorns and Beast Actions work?
Beastmaster assigns one beast to each of three Battlehorns. One beast fights alongside the player at a time, and the active beast can be dismissed and replaced as the Battlehorn rotation continues.
The four main Beast Actions are:
- Parting Blow: Performs a powerful AoE attack before the beast returns to its horn.
- Trick: Commands the beast to use its Instinctual Skill.
- Tempered Release: Commands the beast to perform its unique action.
- Borrow: Gives the Beastmaster a classification-based action taken from the active beast.
There are 50 individual Tempered Release actions and eight classification-based Borrow actions. A Borrowed action remains available after switching beasts and is replaced only when Borrow is used again.
How does the Beastmaster Instinctual Combo system work?
Beastmaster uses separate resources for the player and the active beast. The Beastmaster has four personal Instinctual Skills, while each beast contributes one Instinctual Skill of its own.
Using player and beast Instinctual Skills in succession creates an Instinctual Combo. The skills can be used in different orders, but following their affinity icons clockwise deals more damage. Rally instantly fills the Beastmaster’s gauge, while Rallying Cheer instantly fills the beast’s gauge.
What is Crucible of the Unbroken, and when does it unlock?
Crucible of the Unbroken is Beastmaster’s dedicated solo progression mode, shown as unlocking at Level 30 during the July 25 presentation. It uses tabletop-style Boards with branching paths, enemy battles, bosses, Tent spaces, treasure, shops, Beast Gear, Feed, and persistent health between encounters.
Players bring a roster of roughly 10 to 15 beasts and select three for each battle. Enemy elemental, physical, magical, and status weaknesses can be inspected before choosing a lineup, and the game can automatically recommend beasts.
What rewards can you earn from Crucible of the Unbroken?
Crucible rewards include Beastmaster experience, beast experience, permanent Beast Ranks, Board currency, consumables, Beast Gear, Feed, and materials used to upgrade Beastmaster equipment.
Beasts can reach Rank 25, which unlocks an alternate appearance that remains visible outside Crucible. Clearing all Boards unlocks First, Second, and Third Degree difficulties, with Third Degree qualifying players for seasonal high-score rankings.
The first ranking season is expected to feature a rainbow crystal golem mount as its headline reward. The complete item, equipment, scoring, and reward lists remain unconfirmed.
