Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is FFXIV’s sixth expansion and the start of the new Godless Realms Saga, with Patch 8.0 currently set for a January 2027 release window. The expansion takes players to the frozen Fourth and brings two new jobs, major combat and gearing overhauls, new crossover raids, expanded character customization, and a much less linear approach to MSQ progression.
Square Enix has already revealed a large portion of Evercold across the Anaheim and Berlin Fan Festivals, although several systems are still in development and the second new job remains under wraps.
In this guide, we cover:
- Evercold release window, platforms, and the new Fourth setting;
- Bastion, the second new job, and Reborn vs. Evolved Mode;
- Seasons, Adventurer Activity, and gearing changes;
- New FFVII, Evangelion, and endgame raids;
- MSQ, customization, and Auto Content Balancing;
- World Raids, housing, Chocobo changes, and other 8.x plans.

The Setting: The Fourth, Realmships, and Fargarth — Confirmed / Fan Fest Detail
Evercold sends the Warrior of Light to the Fourth, a reflection ravaged by encroaching ice and a new threat called the Solstice. Civilization survives above the frozen world aboard five massive Realmships, each large enough to contain full landscapes. Two are named:
- Naglfar, Realmship of Water — hosts the new city of Fargarth (plains, cliffs, lakes) and an as-yet-unexplained Ark Crystal
- Hringhorni, Realmship of Fire — an industrial vessel with foundries alongside its own forests and lakes
Both Realmship names reinforce the Fourth’s strong Norse influence. The frozen world below contains enormous arcane colossi, while the trailer frames the Warrior of Light as a mysterious “Wanderer” arriving from the sky.
Fan theory (unconfirmed): players have speculated that the remaining Realmships represent Earth, Wind, and Lightning, while the frozen setting and a one-eyed trailer figure have prompted Fimbulwinter and Odin theories. None are confirmed.
New Jobs — Confirmed, Second Job Unrevealed

Evercold adds two original jobs, not returning classes. Both start at Level 90 and require another Level 90 job plus Evercold access to unlock.
| Job | Role | Status | What we know |
| Bastion | Tank | Confirmed | Evolved-only tank; unlocks in Limsa Lominsa; wields transforming Skyltborg greatshields for melee and ranged combat; uses timed guarding and recovery abilities to protect allies. |
| Unnamed | Physical Ranged DPS | Teased, not named | Metallic and bird-like sound teasers plus a winged creature in the trailer have fueled unconfirmed falconer/hunter speculation. Full reveal expected at Tokyo Fan Festival. |

Reborn vs. Evolved Mode — Confirmed / Fan Fest Detail

The biggest systemic change in Evercold: all 21 existing standard jobs can switch between Reborn Mode (based on today’s combat system) and a new Evolved Mode, sharing level and gear either way. Evercold’s two new jobs are Evolved-only; limited jobs sit outside the system entirely. How different Evolved feels will vary by job — some stay close to Reborn, others get substantially reworked mechanics.
Evolved Mode focuses on:
- Stronger job identities and less reliance on synchronized two-minute burst windows;
- Context-sensitive and consolidated actions to reduce hotbar bloat;
- Roughly 16 necessary buttons in early prototypes, with essential actions available by around Level 50.
Two concrete examples of the consolidation approach: Paladin’s Divine Justice becomes Holy Spirit on enemies, but Clemency on allies, and Provoke/Shirk merge into one context-sensitive action. Evolved Mode also splits tanks into Main Tank (Paladin, Bastion) and Off-Tank (Warrior, Dark Knight, Gunbreaker) — a distinction unique to Evolved Mode, aimed mainly at higher-end content like Savage rather than separate matchmaking roles.
Evolved prototypes shown at Anaheim (subject to change before launch):
| Job | Prototype direction |
| Paladin | Context-sensitive hotbar; precisely timed Holy Sheltron blocks trigger stronger counters. |
| Dragoon | New gauge and directional attacks; can temporarily bypass positional requirements. |
| White Mage | Healing builds a gauge that can be converted into damage; instant Glare. |
| Bard | Free-form song selection instead of a fixed sequence. |
Gearing: Seasons and the Armoury Update — Confirmed / Fan Fest Detail

Seasons restructure post-launch progression by pairing patches (8.0 + 8.1, per Square Enix’s example) instead of treating each as isolated. It is not a paid season pass.
A new Adventurer Activity system shifts daily rewards toward weekly objectives — some one-time, some repeatable — spanning quests, duties, PvP, crafting, and gathering, letting players concentrate progress into fewer sessions. Square Enix is also exploring more ways to raise item level beyond the traditional tomestone/Savage paths, though details are pending.
The Armoury Update reflects your highest item level onto other max-level jobs (materia excluded), cutting down on re-gearing every role from scratch.

New Raid Difficulty and Raids — Confirmed / Fan Fest Detail

A new eight-player difficulty slots between Normal and Savage — roughly Extreme-Trial difficulty, awarding upgradeable Season gear. Clearing it isn’t required for Savage, and its release timing relative to Savage hasn’t been announced.
| Raid | Type | Details |
| Beyond the Lifestream | 3-tier, 8-player, FFVII Remake crossover | First tier launches in Patch 8.01; crossover with the FFVII Remake trilogy |
| EVANGELION – Ghosts of Desire | 24-player Alliance Raid | Evangelion’s Mahiro Maeda joins as guest artist; Square Enix is also rethinking the time burden of 24-player raids generally |
Evercold is bringing a new raid difficulty, another Ultimate, and major FFVII and Evangelion crossover raids. Check our FFXIV Raid Boosts for current Savage, Ultimate, and Alliance Raid options while you prepare for 8.x endgame content.
Public Fields and Other Confirmed Content — Confirmed / Fan Fest Detail

FATEs, Hunts, and Treasure Hunts are getting larger, more dynamic field content, though exact mechanics haven’t been revealed:
- Level cap 100 → 110 for non-limited combat jobs and crafting/gathering, with new actions and traits
- New dungeons, trials, and an Ultimate
- PvP and Duty Support updates
- New gear, recipes, materials, enemies, and allies
- New Allied Society quests, with the society still unrevealed
Customization — Confirmed / Fan Fest Detail
No new playable race, but character creation expands with:
- A new color picker, broader hair/skin colors, finer eye and lip options, eye shadow, and expanded face-paint
- Toggleable gear components
- Beyond launch: Miqo’te can disable facial markings (Patch 8.1), and Square Enix has shown separating Au Ra horns from face presets and toggling racial details like Viera/Lalafell nose shading — Yoshida frames this as loosening how strictly appearance follows racial lore
Customizable action animations also arrive, letting you personalize general and job action visuals (general variants from 8.0, job-specific from 8.1). Berlin showed alternate Teleport animations as an example; unlock methods aren’t specified yet.
MSQ: Nonlinear Routes and Auto Content Balancing — Confirmed / Planned

Past a certain point, Evercold lets you choose the order you tackle areas before the story reconverges — a bigger branch than previous expansions’ openings, with no confirmed route count. Auto Content Balancing lets differently-leveled players progress together without a hard level-sync cap, initially built around this nonlinear MSQ.
- Quest-travel feature (planned): speeds up reaching quest destinations; implementation unconfirmed and may roll out gradually
- New-player MSQ onboarding (planned): a nearer-term fix plus a larger, still-evaluated system, likely with more detail at Tokyo Fan Festival
