Different ammo types serve different raid goals. Choosing the right one matters because Tarkov’s armor and ballistics systems reward preparation more than weapon price alone. A strong rifle with weak ammo can fail against armor, while a simple weapon loaded with the correct rounds can win difficult fights.

Ammo Focus |
Best For |
Why It Matters |
|
High penetration |
Geared PvP, bosses, Raiders, Rogues |
Helps rounds pass through stronger armor instead of being stopped |
|
High flesh damage |
Scavs, unarmored targets, leg-meta builds |
Deals strong damage when armor penetration is not the main goal |
|
Balanced ammo |
General raids, questing, mixed fights |
Gives usable performance against both light armor and exposed body parts |
|
Budget ammo |
Early wipe, cheap kits, backup raids |
Keeps raid costs lower while still giving functional damage |
|
Premium ammo |
Labs, boss hunting, high-risk PvP |
Best used when the kit and raid value justify expensive rounds |
|
Shotgun ammo |
Close-range maps and objective fights |
Can support buckshot, slug, or armor-focused setups depending on playstyle |
|
DMR/Sniper ammo |
Long-range fights and precision builds |
Rewards accuracy and strong penetration at distance |
Good ammo can come from traders, crafts, loot, quests, barters, or Flea Market options depending on the current wipe rules and your account progression. Many top rounds are restricted, expensive, or limited by trader level, which makes restocking slow.
Ammo decides whether your shots penetrate armor, damage limbs, break plates, or get stopped by protection. Tarkov’s official ammunition list shows many calibers and cartridge types, while the ballistics system determines how those rounds interact with armor.
For PvP, players usually choose high-penetration rounds that can deal with armored PMCs. The best choice depends on your weapon, caliber, trader access, and whether you expect close-range fights or long-range duels.
For Scavs and low-armored targets, high flesh damage can be enough. For bosses, guards, Raiders, Rogues, and geared AI enemies, armor penetration becomes much more important.
