Release Date and Unlock Requirements

Beastmaster starts at Level 1 with an initial level cap of 50, fighting with a one-handed axe and shield. Beastmaster fills a melee DPS role, but it’s officially a limited job—the same category as Blue Mage—and cannot be used to progress the main scenario questline.

To gain access, register the Dawntrail expansion on your service account, have a Disciple of War or Magic at Level 50, and complete the prerequisite quest The Ultimate Weapon in the original A Realm Reborn story. Because Dawntrail is required, Beastmaster won’t be available on the Free Trial. Square Enix also said the additional resources allocated to Beastmaster caused it to adjust the timing of the next planned Blue Mage content update.

How Taming and the Master’s Bestiary Work

Ffxiv Beastmaster Job Guide: September 8 Release, Beast Abilities, And Crucible 9

Beastmaster captures wild beasts by weakening them in combat, then converting them into an aetherial form rather than a physical trap — which is how something the size of a behemoth ends up filed in your Bestiary. All 50 launch beasts can be obtained solo; some duty-related beasts may come from solo rewards rather than direct capture. You can still tame in groups if you like, with progress handled separately per player, though monsters above your level are harder to catch.

Every beast you obtain is recorded in the Master’s Bestiary and can be assigned to one of your three Battlehorns. Different beasts grant unique abilities and utility effects such as stuns, so your active trio changes how Beastmaster and its companions fight—especially in Crucible, where matching beast abilities to enemy weaknesses matters.

Battlehorns and Beast Abilities

Final Fantasy Xiv Beastmaster Revealed: Battlehorns, Beast Abilities, And Crucible Solo Content
Ffxiv Beastmaster Job Guide: September 8 Release, Beast Abilities, And Crucible 10

Combat runs on a three-beast rotation: you assign one beast to each of three Battlehorns, summon one, command it, then rotate to the next while the first recovers on cooldown (reportedly 90 seconds in combat, though unconfirmed). Four Beast Actions are confirmed:

ActionWhat it does
Parting BlowBeast executes a powerful AoE attack, then returns to its horn on cooldown
TrickCommands the beast to use its Instinctual Skill
Tempered ReleaseCommands the beast to perform its unique action
BorrowLets the Beastmaster perform an action borrowed from the active beast’s classification

Results depend on the beast in play — Trick’s icon and effect change with whichever beast is active, and with 50 individual Tempered Release actions and 8 classification-based Borrow actions confirmed, that’s a large combination pool without every beast needing its own hotbar.

Summoning a beast grants some limited-use state governing these bigger actions, though recaps disagree on whether the exclusive choice is Tempered Release versus Borrow, or Parting Blow versus Borrow — treat that as unresolved until the tooltips land. A Borrowed action appears to remain available after switching the active beast and is replaced only when you Borrow again. In the demonstration, Soul Crush was used to interrupt a Bomb’s self-destruct, showing the value of carrying situational utility in your arsenal.

How the Instinctual Combo System Works

Ffxiv Beastmaster Limited Job: Main Scenario Quest Requirements, Level Cap, And Combat Guide

Beastmaster tracks two separate resources — one for the Beastmaster, one for the active beast — that fill during combat. Once a gauge is ready, its value can be spent to activate a weaponskill called an Instinctual Skill; the Beastmaster has four of these, and each beast contributes one of its own.

Using the Beastmaster’s and beast’s Instinctual Skills in succession creates an Instinctual Combo. They don’t need any particular order to trigger the combo, but chaining them in the intended affinity sequence — especially clockwise around the gauge — deals more damage, and repeating the same affinity still adds a smaller bonus. Rally instantly fills the Beastmaster’s gauge, and Rallying Cheer instantly fills the beast’s, letting you continue or rebuild a combo mid-fight.

Crucible of the Unbroken

Crucible of the Unbroken unlocks at Level 30 and works as a leveling route for both the Beastmaster and their beasts. It’s structured as tabletop-style Boards, taught through the job quests before opening its deeper systems.

How Boards Work

You assemble a roster of roughly 10 to 15 beasts, then choose three per battle based on the enemies ahead — their elemental, physical, magical, and status weaknesses are all worth scouting, though the game can auto-recommend a lineup if you’d rather not. Every Board ends in a boss, with elite fights, recovery spaces, treasure, and shops along the way, and routes can force trade-offs like giving up a treasure path to recover HP at a Tent instead — HP doesn’t refill automatically between fights. Combat also adds enmity control: Snarl pulls aggro onto the active beast, Challenge pulls it onto the Beastmaster.

Rewards and Loot

Treasure spaces let you pick one Beast Gear piece from four to keep for the run — Ring of Sacrifice, which revives the Beastmaster by sacrificing the active beast, is one demonstrated example. Consumables are a separate category, working more like Deep Dungeon pomanders; Temporal Sand grants a battle restart after a defeat. Shops sell Feed, which strengthens beasts within satiety limits that vary by classification — more satiety slots can mean more room to grow, even for a beast with modest starting stats. A results screen appears even after a loss, awarding score, rank, and beast experience regardless.

Beast Ranks and Degrees

Beasts gain rank through Crucible results, up to a max of 25, raising Strength, Intelligence, Physical and Magical Resistance, and Constitution — reaching rank 25 also unlocks an alternate appearance that carries over outside Crucible. Clearing every Board unlocks three harder Degrees, with Third Degree qualifying for seasonal high-score rankings; the first season is said to run from two weeks after Patch 7.56 until Patch 7.58, with a rainbow crystal golem mount as the headline reward — treat those specific dates as provisional. Job gear upgrades through Crucible too, using a material translated as Faded Remnant of Resilience.

Gearing and Glamour Preparation

Ffxiv Beastmaster Release Guide: Fight Alongside Beasts And Master Crucible Of The Unbroken
Ffxiv Beastmaster Job Guide: September 8 Release, Beast Abilities, And Crucible 13

Patch 7.5’s UI hints point to Striking armor, Slaying accessories, and existing shield categories, but the final equipment table and stat priorities are still unconfirmed — an Augmented Ironworks Striking and Slaying set is a reasonable use for spare Poetics, though job quests or Crucible upgrades could replace it quickly. For glamour, the previewed Level 50 job gear already gives Beastmaster a horned, fur-trimmed wilderness-tamer look; the Warg or Paglth’an sets are solid alternatives, and The Emperor’s New Shield could hide the off-hand for a single-axe silhouette if Beastmaster ends up compatible with existing shields.

Once Patch 7.56 confirms Beastmaster’s final equipment options, our FFXIV Gearing Boost can help you obtain a complete set of weapons, armor, accessories, and Allagan Tomestones without spending hours farming duties.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Beastmaster coming to FFXIV?

Beastmaster launches in Final Fantasy XIV on September 8, 2026, alongside Patch 7.56. It will arrive as the game’s second limited job after Blue Mage.

How do you unlock Beastmaster in FFXIV?

You must own and register the Dawntrail expansion, complete the A Realm Reborn main scenario through The Ultimate Weapon, and have at least one Disciple of War or Magic at Level 50. Beastmaster then starts at Level 1.

Where does the Beastmaster unlock quest start?

The exact unlock NPC, quest name, and starting location have not been confirmed yet. Square Enix has only confirmed the account, story, and Level 50 combat-job requirements ahead of the Patch 7.56 notes.

What level does Beastmaster start at, and what is its level cap?

Beastmaster starts at Level 1 and has an initial level cap of 50. Its job quests, open-world taming, and Crucible of the Unbroken provide the main progression paths.

Do you need the Dawntrail expansion to play Beastmaster?

Yes. Dawntrail must be registered on your service account before you can unlock Beastmaster, even though the prerequisite main scenario completion only extends through A Realm Reborn.

Is Beastmaster available on the FFXIV Free Trial?

No. Because Beastmaster requires ownership of the Dawntrail expansion, it will not be available to Free Trial accounts.

What does being a limited job mean for Beastmaster?

Beastmaster follows its own progression and content rules rather than functioning like a standard melee DPS job. It cannot be used to advance the main scenario, and it has a separate Level 50 cap, collection system, and solo activity.

Its complete Duty Finder, premade-party, PvP, raid, and exploration-content restrictions have not yet been published.

Can Beastmaster use the Duty Finder or enter dungeons and raids?

Square Enix has not confirmed Beastmaster’s complete Duty Finder and matchmaking rules. As a limited job, it is expected to face restrictions similar to Blue Mage, but the exact list of available dungeons, raids, trials, and other duties should be confirmed in the Patch 7.56 notes.

How do you tame beasts as Beastmaster in FFXIV?

Beastmaster weakens wild beasts in combat before attempting to capture them. The exact capture action, required health threshold, success-rate formula, and other conditions remain unconfirmed.

Beasts above your current Beastmaster level are harder to catch. Group taming is supported, but each player’s capture progress is handled separately.

How many beasts can Beastmaster capture and use in combat?

There are 50 beasts in the initial launch roster, and all of them can be obtained solo. Some will be captured directly in the open world, while beasts connected to multiplayer duties may instead come from solo rewards.

For regular combat, you assign three beasts to three Battlehorns and rotate between them one at a time. In Crucible of the Unbroken, you bring a wider roster of roughly 10 to 15 beasts and choose three for each battle.

What weapons and gear does Beastmaster use?

Beastmaster fights with a one-handed axe and shield. Patch 7.5 interface observations suggest that it may use Striking armor, Slaying accessories, and existing shield categories, but Square Enix has not published the final equipment table or stat priorities.

An Augmented Ironworks Striking and Slaying set may be useful preparation if you have spare Poetics, but it is not confirmed as best-in-slot gear.

How do Battlehorns and Beast Actions work?

Beastmaster assigns one beast to each of three Battlehorns. One beast fights alongside the player at a time, and the active beast can be dismissed and replaced as the Battlehorn rotation continues.

The four main Beast Actions are:

  • Parting Blow: Performs a powerful AoE attack before the beast returns to its horn.
  • Trick: Commands the beast to use its Instinctual Skill.
  • Tempered Release: Commands the beast to perform its unique action.
  • Borrow: Gives the Beastmaster a classification-based action taken from the active beast.

There are 50 individual Tempered Release actions and eight classification-based Borrow actions. A Borrowed action remains available after switching beasts and is replaced only when Borrow is used again.

How does the Beastmaster Instinctual Combo system work?

Beastmaster uses separate resources for the player and the active beast. The Beastmaster has four personal Instinctual Skills, while each beast contributes one Instinctual Skill of its own.

Using player and beast Instinctual Skills in succession creates an Instinctual Combo. The skills can be used in different orders, but following their affinity icons clockwise deals more damage. Rally instantly fills the Beastmaster’s gauge, while Rallying Cheer instantly fills the beast’s gauge.

What is Crucible of the Unbroken, and when does it unlock?

Crucible of the Unbroken is Beastmaster’s dedicated solo progression mode, shown as unlocking at Level 30 during the July 25 presentation. It uses tabletop-style Boards with branching paths, enemy battles, bosses, Tent spaces, treasure, shops, Beast Gear, Feed, and persistent health between encounters.

Players bring a roster of roughly 10 to 15 beasts and select three for each battle. Enemy elemental, physical, magical, and status weaknesses can be inspected before choosing a lineup, and the game can automatically recommend beasts.

What rewards can you earn from Crucible of the Unbroken?

Crucible rewards include Beastmaster experience, beast experience, permanent Beast Ranks, Board currency, consumables, Beast Gear, Feed, and materials used to upgrade Beastmaster equipment.

Beasts can reach Rank 25, which unlocks an alternate appearance that remains visible outside Crucible. Clearing all Boards unlocks First, Second, and Third Degree difficulties, with Third Degree qualifying players for seasonal high-score rankings.

The first ranking season is expected to feature a rainbow crystal golem mount as its headline reward. The complete item, equipment, scoring, and reward lists remain unconfirmed.
