FFXIV's Keybound Coffer is a random-prize box from Keybound Brawler, a Gold Saucer typing event whose first run features a Final Fantasy VII Remake collaboration. Your performance earns MGC and MGP, while event credits let you choose specific rewards instead of relying on a box opening.

- Typists learning the mechanics: Pressing Esc abandons the match only while the text window is empty, forfeiting rewards and potentially incurring a Duty Finder penalty; with text in the window, Esc clears it instead.
How much currency does a clear earn?
A score of at least 60,000 reaches the maximum payout of 350 MGC and 2,800 MGP; below that threshold, rewards scale approximately with your share of the target score.
| Final score | Currency payout |
| 60,000 or higher | 350 MGC and 2,800 MGP |
| 33,817, a documented lower-score example | 196 MGC and 1,555 MGP |
MGC means Manderville Gold Saucer Credits, a separate currency from the Gold Saucer's MGP. You can receive MGC without finishing the encounter, with your score and the waves you survive affecting the payout.
Each match has three enemy waves; you damage approaching enemies by entering their displayed words, and enemies that reach your barrier damage its shared HP. Losing all barrier HP ends the attempt for the whole party.
Your score has several moving parts:
- Accurate inputs: Successful entries award points and build a bonus gauge that increases points per attack; the gauge drains when you stop scoring.
- Barrier health: Each wave ends with a score bonus calculated as 10,000 multiplied by the proportion of barrier HP remaining.
- Magic Pots: Defeating one grants Impassioned Inputs, temporarily increasing bonus points.
Protect the barrier as well as your typing streak.
What can you get inside the box?
You receive a Keybound Coffer whenever you finish all three waves, and you can buy another from the MGC Trader for 910 MGC. The FFXIV Keybound Coffer itself cannot be traded, sold or listed on the market.
Possible contents include food and weapons such as the Adamant Rod. Food and materials appeared in one creator's reported openings, leading that creator to prefer direct purchases over spending credits on more coffers.
Choose the item you want first, then decide whether to spend anything on chance.
What do you need before queuing?
New and free-trial characters
Free-trial characters can participate. Follow this unlock route:
- Main scenario prerequisite: Reach level 15 and finish The Gridanian Envoy, The Ul'dahn Envoy or The Lominsan Envoy.
- Gold Saucer access: Complete It Could Happen to You.
- Event quest: Accept Keyward Bound from the Catlike Mammet at the Gold Saucer's X:5.4, Y:7.0.
- Event area: Speak with W'zazanh at X:6.1, Y:7.3 to enter Keybound Square, then speak with the Magitype Master to finish the quest.
- Registration: Speak with the Keybound Registrar inside Keybound Square to join a match.
You can register alone or with up to four party members, but everyone in a premade group must have unlocked the event. Matchmaking can start an undersized party after a wait, with enemy HP adjusted to the number of participants; all classes and jobs, including limited jobs, can enter.
For the broader expansion context, see our Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold overview.
Console and controller users
Connect a physical keyboard before registering: Square Enix states, “Gamepads and on-screen keyboards cannot be used”. Chat, auto-translate and keyboard shortcuts are unavailable during the match.
The keyboard requirement feels unfair to many players on console, who worry about needing additional hardware to participate.
Typists learning the mechanics
Type a displayed enemy word or phrase and press Enter; a successful entry selects its target automatically, and tougher enemies can require multiple successful inputs. Capitalization does not matter, but spelling does.
| Input detail | What you must enter |
| Periods, commas and spaces | Include them. |
| Question marks, exclamation marks, hyphens and apostrophes | You may omit them. |
| Accented characters | Preserve them: Doppelganger and Brisingamen fail, while Doppelgaenger works for Doppelgänger. |
Watch for mechanics that interrupt normal typing:
- Interruptible spells: Hit the caster the number of times shown beneath its flashing cast bar.
- Letterlock: Stop pressing keys when the cast completes and wait through the attack's bright flash; pressing keys during the dangerous interval triggers a temporary lockout.
- Cryptic Communications: Memorize words during their brief appearances through the static; you can still submit them while they are hidden.
- Barrier Busters: Enter the words above your barrier to charge it against the incoming attack; a full charge provides a short period of protection.
Pressing Esc abandons the match only while the text window is empty, forfeiting rewards and potentially incurring a Duty Finder penalty; with text in the window, Esc clears it instead. Prolonged inactivity can remove you with the same consequences.

Which rewards should you budget for?
Exchange credits with the MGC Trader in Keybound Square at X:6.2, Y:6.0. Start with a shopping list rather than treating every reward as equally urgent.
Outfits and their restrictions
The Avalanche Brawler attire represents Tifa and is restricted to female characters, while the Avalanche Leader attire represents Barret and is restricted to male characters; the earrings are restricted too. The sunglasses restriction frustrates players who dislike the gender locks.
They've spent the last several years removing gender restrictions from most gear.

| Avalanche Brawler's Top | 430 |
| Avalanche Brawler's Halfgloves | 260 |

Budget 1,380 MGC for Tifa's four clothing pieces or 1,570 MGC for Barret's five, excluding their earrings.
The Brawler top includes its arm sections and hanging straps rather than attaching those details to the gloves or bottoms, which matters when mixing pieces with other glamour. The Leader vest includes the arm tattoo, whose color stays unchanged when dyeing the piece.

The Avalanche Gatling Gun is a fashion accessory available to both genders; its firing action includes sound effects and stops when you move. The framer's kit supplies reactor-themed portrait and adventurer plate decoration, while the typing emote plays once rather than looping.
When do you need to spend your credits?
The partnership starts October 28, 2026, and lasts until Patch 8.0 goes live; players may only collect and trade MGC while the event is active. Spend toward your chosen rewards before that cutoff.
Square Enix says Keybound Brawler will return afterward at irregular intervals. A permanent Gold Saucer version would be preferable to the limited schedule for players who want the activity to remain available.
For a longer-term achievement goal, Masterstroke IV requires 100 clears and awards the Magitype Magister title.
