Updated October 16, 2026 for the TBC Anniversary realms.

To level Leatherworking from 1 to 375 in TBC Classic, craft armor kits, hides, and basic leather gear through skill 300 in Azeroth before moving to Outland to make Knothide items and raid Drums. The profession pairs naturally with Skinning, which lets you gather the vast amounts of leather required without spending excessive gold at the Auction House. Reaching the level cap unlocks powerful specialization sets and valuable group utility for endgame PvE.

Pattern: Drums of Battle costs 12 gold and requires Honored reputation with The Sha'tar, sold by Almaador in Shattrath City. Pattern: Drums of Panic costs 12 gold and requires Honored reputation with the Keepers of Time, sold by Alurmi inside the Caverns of Time. You can alternately continue crafting Drums of Battle up to 375, though the recipe turns green at 372 and requires more materials.

Leatherworking specializations

At character level 40 and skill level 225, you can complete a quest to unlock one of three specializations. Each branch produces bind-on-pickup gear sets at level 70 tailored to specific roles.

Dragonscale Leatherworking

Dragonscale crafts Mail sets designed for physical and magical damage dealers. The physical damage set grants a 20 Hit Rating bonus when all three items are equipped, while the caster set provides 23 Spell Power.

  • Alliance starter: Peter Galen in Azshara
  • Horde starter: Thorkaf Dragoneye in the Badlands

Elemental Leatherworking

Elemental focuses on Leather gear for physical melee damage, providing a 40 Attack Power set bonus when all three pieces are worn.

  • Alliance starter: Sarah Tanner in Searing Gorge
  • Horde starter: Brumn Winterhoof in Arathi Highlands
  • Turn-in materials: 2 Heart of Fire, 2 Globe of Water, 2 Core of Earth, and 2 Breath of Wind

Tribal Leatherworking

Tribal creates Leather armor that boosts both spell damage and healing, granting an 8 Mana-per-5 set bonus across all three items.

  • Alliance starter: Begins the Wild Leather quest chain across Feralas and Stranglethorn Vale
  • Horde starter: Se'Jib in Stranglethorn Vale completes the Wild Leather chain

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main benefits of Leatherworking in TBC raids?

Leatherworkers can craft and use party-wide Drums that provide short-range combat buffs to all party members within 8 yards. Using Leatherworking drums invokes the Tinnitus debuff, preventing reuse for two minutes.

Do I have to select a Leatherworking specialization to hit 375?

Specializations are completely optional and are not required to level the profession to 375. You can reach maximum skill using standard vendor and trainer recipes without unlocking a branch.
