Updated October 18, 2026 for the TBC Anniversary realms.

To level Skinning from 1 to 375 on TBC Anniversary realms, train each rank upgrade at capital cities or Outland hubs, carry a Skinning Knife in your bags, and advance through beast-dense open-world routes or instanced farming pulls. The progression moves through Azeroth starting areas, the Barrens or Wetlands, Arathi Highlands, Feralas, and Un'Goro Crater before transitioning to Hellfire Peninsula and Nagrand. Skinning gathers consistent materials for crafting or profit while hitting every tier unlock without wasting kills.

Profession Basics and Formulas

Skinning allows characters to harvest leather, hides, and scales from fully looted corpses of Beasts, Dragonkin, and Silithids. The profession requires a Skinning Knife in your bags, though the knife does not need to be equipped. Applying Enchant Gloves – Skinning provides a 5-point bonus to your Skinning skill, which lets you skin mobs one level higher than normal caps allow.

Your gathering capability against monster levels is governed by two formulas based on your current skill:

  • Skill 1 to 100: Maximum mob level = (Skinning skill ÷ 10) + 10
  • Skill 100 to 375: Maximum mob level = Skinning skill ÷ 5

A level 30 monster requires 150 skill, while a level 42 creature requires 210 skill. Reaching 350 skill enables reliable gathering across Outland non-elites, and at 360 skill gathering attempts never fail on non-elite Outland beasts.

Skinning Trainers and Skill Ranks

Each profession rank requires a specific character level and a trainer visit to raise your maximum skill cap.

Azeroth capital city guards provide map markers directly to local trainers upon request. New trainers in TBC Classic Anniversary include Gurf at Stillpine Hold in Azuremyst Isle (/way 44.6 23.6), Remere at Trader's Tier in The Exodar (/way 66.2 74.2), Mathreyn near the Eversong Woods flight point (/way 53.8 51.2), and Tyn in the Walk of Elders within Silvermoon City (/way 85.0 78.8).

Master Skinning requires training in Outland. Alliance players learn Master Skinning from Jelena Nightsky inside the Honor Hold inn in Hellfire Peninsula (/way 54.4 63.2). Horde players train with Moorutu near the Thrallmar inn behind a mammoth bone (/way 56.2 38.6). Both factions can also train with Seymour in Lower City within Shattrath City.

Leveling 1-300 in Azeroth

Open-world farming relies on continuous movement along circuit routes rather than camping stationary spawns, ensuring fresh beasts respawn behind your path. You can skin looted beasts slain by other players to acquire free skill increases without killing the targets yourself. Open-world grinding can be faster than traveling to dungeons, especially for simple AoE grinding, according to a few players.

1 to 75: Starter Zones

Alliance characters run a circular circuit in Dun Morogh between Coldridge Valley, Kharanos, and nearby mountain passes, hunting boars, wolves, and snow leopards. Horde characters follow a loop through Durotar around Razor Hill and Sen'jin Village targeting scorpids, boars, and raptors. These targets yield Ruined Leather Scraps and Light Leather. Return to a city trainer to learn Journeyman Skinning at skill 50 or above.

75 to 155: Wetlands or The Barrens

Alliance players run through Loch Modan around the lake and hills before moving along the river through Wetlands toward Menethil Harbor. Wetlands crocolisks, raptors, and whelps provide consistent skill gains.

Horde players proceed south through The Barrens from The Crossroads down toward Camp Taurajo. Dranh teaches Expert Skinning at Camp Taurajo once you achieve skill 125.

155 to 205: Arathi Highlands or Thousand Needles

Alliance players farm raptors and fleshstalkers across Arathi Highlands. Avoid the level 36–37 raptors in southeastern Arathi Highlands until your Skinning skill reaches 180.

Horde players move south into Thousand Needles and farm densely packed creatures throughout the Shimmering Flats up to skill 205. Train Artisan Skinning in Ironforge or at Camp Mojache in Feralas before pushing past skill 205.

205 to 280: Feralas

Both factions farm yetis, bears, wolves, and hippogryphs around Camp Mojache and the western Yeti Cave in Feralas. Yetis yield Heavy Leather and Thick Leather. Ensure you train Artisan Skinning at skill 225 if you have not unlocked it previously, as failing to train Artisan halts further gains.

280 to 300: Un'Goro Crater

Farm dinosaurs, pterodactyls, and Diemetradons along the western and central areas of Un'Goro Crater. These targets yield Thick Leather and Rugged Leather to carry your skill to the 300 cap.

Dungeon Leveling Options

Dungeon grinding offers dense packs of beasts without open-world competition or respawn downtime, though solo clears favor classes with strong area-of-effect damage. The leveling route is built around AoE classes like mage, so it is far less effective for other classes, some players point out.

  • Wailing Caverns: Clear clusters of raptors and serpents near the entrance for rapid early skill-ups.

As a horde druid i went outside org killed the thunder lizards to 75 then did WC too 150. done in 45min

— one player

  • Razorfen Kraul: Clear dense packs of boars in the left cleft immediately inside the instance entrance to gather Medium Leather.
  • Uldaman: Enter through the rear entrance in Dustwind Gulch to gather bats and scorpids right inside the doorway, then exit and reset the instance. Uldaman is a poor spot past roughly 255-270 because skill-ups turn green and slow to a crawl, so switching to another dungeon is better, note some players.
  • Sunken Temple: Pull packs of dragonkin and whelps to farm Thick Leather and Rugged Leather alongside vendor items and raw silver.

The TBC Anniversary Skinning Boost handles the manual mob farming across these open-world circuits and dungeon pulls to bring your gathering skill directly to 375.

Leveling 300-375 in Outland

Visit a Master Skinning trainer immediately upon arriving in Outland to raise your skill cap to 375. Pairing your gathering progression alongside a crafting trade using a TBC Leatherworking guide allows you to convert harvested raw hides and scraps directly into gear and consumables.

300 to 330: Hellfire Peninsula

Begin by skinning Starving Helboars outside central bases until skill 305, then switch to Deranged Helboars. From 310 to 330, farm Razorfang Hatchlings and Razorfang Ravagers along Razorthorn Trail in southwestern Hellfire Peninsula, or Quillfang Ravagers near the Zangarmarsh border.

330 to 375: Nagrand

Move to Nagrand and run circuits across the plains, hunting Clefthoofs and Talbuks. Clefthoofs yield Knothide Leather as well as Thick Clefthoof Leather, an expensive material needed for Nethercleft Leg Armor.

Once your skill reaches 360, you can skin all non-elite monsters in Outland without failure. You can finish the final 15 skill points on Clefthoofs in Nagrand or transition to Dragonkin in Blade's Edge Mountains and Netherstorm to harvest valuable Nether Dragonscales.

What Leather Sells For on Anniversary Realms

Prices fluctuate across individual realms, but regional auction house data outlines which materials command the highest returns. High-end scales and specialty craft hides yield the highest unit prices, led by Cobra Scales and Wind Scales across both regions. Mid-tier materials like Thick Leather and Rugged Leather maintain steady trading volumes to supply leveling crafters.

The table below reflects regionwide market scans recorded on October 16, 2026 for US realms and October 17, 2026 for EU realms.

On US realms, selling five Knothide Leather Scraps yields 23s 75c while a combined Knothide Leather sells for 24s, netting 25c more. On EU realms, five Knothide Leather Scraps bring 26s 10c compared to 28s 38c for one Knothide Leather, earning 2s 28c more. Light Leather on US fell from its 60-day listing average of 3s 2c to 99c, making it an item to store rather than sell immediately. Thick Clefthoof Leather also dipped from 1g 86s over 60 days to 1g 16s on US realms and from 2g 18s to 1g 40s on EU realms, indicating players may want to hold their stock.
