Tauren characters in World of Warcraft: Forever were the subject of a major mobility change in the final pre-launch development update on October 26. Blizzard announced that the plainsrunning passive would ramp up to a 60% movement speed increase on foot, doubling the previous 30% cap. However, the newest client build (1.60.1.70707) still lists Plainsrunning as 1% movement speed every 5 seconds spent moving, up to a maximum of 30%, and the beta may still change these values. The announcement also removed the trait’s interaction with mounts and trimmed Endurance.
What changed with Plainsrunning and Tauren racials
In the October 26 development notes, Blizzard explained the philosophy driving the late tuning pass: "In taking a final pass on these, we’ve prioritized racial identity, which means that some races will naturally be slightly more effective than others at certain combat roles". The developers added that they were "doing a tuning pass on some of the remaining passive bonuses to help ensure that they aren’t skewing outcomes in a way that limits player preferences".
The October 26 announcement changed the pacing of the buff alongside its maximum: instead of 1% per stack, plainsrunning was to award 2% speed per stack up to a maximum of 60%. The client build dated October 31 instead lists 1% every 5 seconds moving, up to 30%. The announcement also said the passive no longer increases mounted movement speed. The October 16 notes require a minimum distance travelled each second to keep the effect, so stutter-stepping is not enough.
| Trait Mechanic | Previous Beta Value | October 26 Announced Value |
| Speed Per Stack | 1% | 2% |
| Maximum Speed Bonus | 30% | 60% (the October 31 client build still lists 30%) |
| Mounted Speed Interaction | +3% mounted movement speed | None |
| Endurance Modifiers | +5% Health, +2% crit damage & healing | +5% Health only |
The mobility upgrade came with a direct cost to Tauren combat power. Endurance lost its 2% increased critical strike damage and healing bonus, leaving it strictly as a 5% increase to total Health without any hit chance or critical strike modifiers.

What the 60% speed cap means for players
If the announced 60% cap is applied, on-foot Tauren at full momentum could match the speed of paid mounts without purchasing riding training. The October 31 client build still lists a 30% maximum. For travelers exploring earlier racial tuning history across other factions, our breakdown of WoW Forever racial changes details the broader balance pass.
The ramping mechanic does have practical limitations in regular gameplay. Because the trait requires sustained forward movement to preserve momentum, short trips between tightly packed quest objectives do not always provide enough travel time to hit maximum speed. Plainsrunning is clunky and underwhelming in practice, and its speed is not worth the ramp-up time once mounts are available, believe some players.
Because the buff is a racial passive tied to running on foot, it alters how Tauren approach class-specific movement options.
Tauren Druids just aren't going to use travel form. It's 20% slower than just running around on foot.
— one player
Players aiming to bypass the early faction grinds can use a WoW Forever Nightclaw Druids Reputation Boost to complete required activities and unlock reputation rewards.
Tauren characters also retain their other baseline racial abilities alongside the updated running passive:
- War Stomp: Stuns up to 5 nearby enemies within 8 yards for 2 seconds on a 0.5-second cast and a 90-second cooldown.
- Cultivation: Targets an Herbalism node to spawn a bonus herb that can be harvested without the Herbalism skill on a 15-minute cooldown. The ability requires a character level equal to the herb's gathering requirement divided by 5, while herbs requiring over 300 skill can be cultivated at level 60.
- Endurance: Passively increases total Health by 5%.
Plainsrunning is a fun, flavorful nod to a cut vanilla ability and makes Tauren appealing to play, feel other players.
What comes next for WoW Forever
The October 26 development notes were presented as the final planned balance update for racials prior to release. Forever is in beta until its launch on November 4, so values such as plainsrunning’s may still change.
