Black Temple Location and Entrance
Black Temple sits in eastern Shadowmoon Valley (/way 71 46). The entrance isn’t the giant front gate visible from a distance — it’s the smaller opening into the Karabor Sewers nearby. You’ll need to finish the account-wide attunement chain before you can zone in.
Black Temple Boss Order and Raid Shortcuts
The rough order runs: Naj’entus → Supremus → Shade of Akama / Teron Gorefiend / Gurtogg Bloodboil / Reliquary of Souls (any order) → Mother Shahraz → Illidari Council → Illidan Stormrage.
BT also opens internal shortcuts as you progress. Once Supremus dies, Spirit of Olum can teleport your raid to the Sanctuary of Shadows (Ashtongue NPCs and quartermaster). Another shortcut opens after the Illidari Council.

Mother Shahraz Shadow Resistance Requirements
Non-tanks should aim for 174 Shadow Resistance from gear, reaching 244 total with Prayer of Shadow Protection’s 70 SR (184 from gear if only Rank I is available). Strong groups — especially Engineers using Rocket Boots — can trade some resistance back for throughput gear. Tanks generally skip SR entirely; they need standard tank stats for Saber Lash.

Marks of the Illidari, earned during Phase 3, exchange for Shattrath flasks usable in Black Temple (1 Mark each, from your Aldor/Scryer vendor). The vendor needs Exalted with The Sha’tar, Cenarion Expedition, and Aldor or Scryer — worth finishing if you’re close.
Illidan Fire Resistance Requirements
Easy to overlook if you’ve only prepped Shadow Resistance. Illidan’s Flames of Azzinoth phase needs two Fire Resistance-capped tanks, separate from the SR Warlock used for the Demon Phase.
Black Temple Trash Mechanics
Black Temple is trash-heavy, and a few packs matter more than others.
- Kill Aqueous Spawns quickly — their Sludge Nova stacks, and if an Aqueous Lord is nearby they can channel Merge to rapidly heal it.
- Focus Ashtongue Mystics first: they Chain Heal, Bloodlust enemies, and drop Windfury Totems.
- Avoid casting into Shadowmoon Reavers’ Spell Absorption.
- Stack for Bonechewer Behemoth’s Meteor so its fixed damage gets split across multiple players instead of landing on one.
- Whoever’s hit by a Promenade Sentinel’s L5 Arcane Charge needs to be topped off and covered by an absorb — it deals damage equal to 100% of the target’s max HP.
One nice progression note: all Ashtongue trash turns friendly once Shade of Akama is dead.
Black Temple Boss Strategies
High Warlord Naj’entus
Spread for Needle Spine, free anyone hit by Impaling Spine. Break Tidal Shield with the recovered spine only once the raid is topped off — Tidal Burst follows as a raid-wide check.
Supremus
Two phases: melee tank-and-spank with Hateful Strike soaking, then a Gaze/kiting phase dodging volcanoes.
Shade of Akama
Kill all six Channelers while controlling adds, then burn the Shade once it engages Akama.
Teron Gorefiend
Shadow of Death is the whole fight. Near the debuff’s expiry, move to a back corner; after you die, four Shadowy Constructs spawn that only Vengeful Spirits can damage. Open with Spirit Volley and Spirit Chains, then rotate Spirit Lance through them.
Gurtogg Bloodboil
Tanks rotate Acidic Wound stacks. Bloodboil always hits the five furthest players, so raids assign three five-player groups to rotate who stands furthest out. Fel Rage turns one random player into a 30-second survival check.
Reliquary of Souls
Three essence phases. Suffering removes healing and uses proximity Fixate. Desire reflects damage and needs interrupts/dispels. Anger is the burn phase — Soul Scream drains the tank’s mana/rage and hits harder the more is burned, so the tank wants to be low, not full, when it lands.
Mother Shahraz
Black Temple’s biggest prep check. Three tanks stack for Saber Lash; the three players linked by Fatal Attraction must separate immediately (Rocket Boots help). Ranged and healers should stay more than 18 yards away to avoid Silencing Shriek, and use walls or room geometry to limit Sinister Beam knockback.
Illidari Council
Four bosses share one health pool. A Mage tanks Zerevor at range and Spellsteals Dampen Magic; Gathios should be kept away from the others because his auras buff nearby allies; Malande’s Circle of Healing needs dedicated interrupts; Veras periodically Vanishes and poisons random players.

Illidan Stormrage
A physical tank handles Shear, two Fire Resistance tanks manage the Flames of Azzinoth (stay near your Warglaive to avoid Uncaged Wrath), and an SR Warlock covers the Demon Phase. Strong raids can skip Demon Form by pushing Illidan from 65% to 30% before the ~60-second Phase 3 window ends. Maiev’s traps in the final phase matter as much as raw damage.
