Updated October 28, 2026 for the run-up to the WoW Forever launch on November 4, 2026. Written from the beta; details can change at launch.

Skinning in World of Warcraft: Forever is a primary gathering profession leveled by skinning dead beasts across Azeroth. Based on beta testing ahead of the official launch on November 4, 2026, the profession scales from 1 to a maximum base skill of 300 while unlocking profession-specific camp buffs and scarce crafting materials. This wow forever skinning guide details every training tier, trainer waypoint, and optimized leveling route to take your character to 300.

How Skinning Works in Forever

You only need a Skinning Knife in your bags to skin a beast; equipping it is not required. Vendors for trade and leatherworking supplies sell the knife across starting zones and cities.

A dead creature becomes skinnable once all standard loot has been removed from its corpse. When you hover over an eligible body, your cursor changes to indicate you can skin it with a right-click. The casting time scales with your mastery: apprentices skin a carcass in 2 seconds, while artisans take 3 seconds.

A formula governs the highest level of beast you can skin based on your current profession score:

  • Level 1–10 beasts: Require Skinning skill 1.
  • Level 11–20 beasts: Require (Monster Level – 10) * 10 Skinning.
  • Level 21+ beasts: Require Monster Level * 5 Skinning.

As a quick rule of thumb when leveling up to skill 100, calculate the maximum monster level as (Skinning / 10) + 10. Past 100 skill, divide your current Skinning rating by 5.

In crowded starting locations, "Also staying at crowded spots and skinning other peoples kills works well too at game start." said one player regarding quick early gains.

You must visit a trainer to unlock higher rank caps before reaching your current bracket's limit.

Leveling Skinning 1-300 Routes

Skinning levels steadily alongside character progression, but focusing on dense wildlife zones accelerates your gains.

1-50: Starting Areas

Alliance players should farm wolves and boars around Goldshire in Elwynn Forest. Horde players can hunt scorpions, boars, and raptors starting around Sen'jin Village and heading north toward Orgrimmar. Skyborne characters can skin the local wildlife across Zephras Isle.

At skill 50, visit Helene Peltskinner in Goldshire or your local trainer to learn Journeyman Skinning.

50-75: Westfall and The Barrens

Alliance gatherers can clear boars and coyotes surrounding Sentinel Hill in Westfall. Horde gatherers should skin raptors, plainstriders, and lions near The Crossroads in The Barrens.

75-105: Loch Modan and The Barrens

Farm bears, boars, and crocolisks along the eastern and western shores of The Loch in Loch Modan. In The Barrens, work toward Ratchet for denser packs of higher-level beasts.

105-150: Hillsbrad Foothills

Target the bears and lions roaming the fields across the center of Hillsbrad Foothills. While some higher-level beasts may resist skinning at first, you should be able to skin almost any wild animal you come across from skill 125 to 150.

Learn Expert Skinning from Dranh in Camp Taurajo, Balthus Stoneflayer in Ironforge, or another city trainer once you reach 125.

150-200: Alterac Mountains

Slay and skin the yetis throughout the Alterac Mountains until 175. From 175 to 200, continue clearing yetis while adding mountain lions to your circuit.

Visit an Artisan trainer at skill 200 to raise your skill cap to 300.

200-250: Alterac Mountains and The Hinterlands

Remain on the beasts in Alterac Mountains until reaching skill 210. Move to The Hinterlands, beginning in the western valleys and tracking eastward toward higher-level beasts as your rank grows to 250.

250-300: Un'Goro Crater

Travel to Un'Goro Crater and target Pterrordaxes along the eastern and western edges until skill 275. From 275 to 300, skin any dinosaur or beast throughout the crater floor to hit the cap.

If you want to skip manual farming circuits across these zones, the WoW Forever Skinning Boost assigns a booster to level your profession directly on your character.

Boosting Skinning Past 300

The base profession maximum is 300, but select high-end creatures require higher scores. You can elevate your harvesting rating using specific enchantments and quest tools:

  • Keen Skinning Knife: Grants +3 Skinning, awarded from a Horde-exclusive quest.
  • Enchant Gloves – Skinning: Permanently adds +5 Skinning to gloves.
  • Enchant Gloves – Advanced Skinning: Permanently adds +10 Skinning to gloves.

Scarce Materials and Recipes

Skinners can discover rare Scarce items as bonus drops alongside standard leather and scales. Beta testing introduced three profession-specific items: Pristine Leather, Pristine Hide, and Pristine Scale. High-end materials like Fel Leather and Fel Hide are used in endgame recipes, though where they can be skinned and their requirements are not yet known. Leather and hides can also be packed into Waylaid Crates and turned in to faction supply representatives for Merchant's Favor.

Pristine leather and hide drops are restricted by character level rather than farmable indefinitely, report some players who tested the system.

Skinners can craft camping items that provide party utilities near campfires:

  • Camp Chair: Requires Skinning 20, taught by trainers. Grants a 2% Critical Strike bonus to players resting nearby, which cannot stack with Moonkin Aura.
  • Field Guide: Requires Skinning 140, crafted using 3 Medium Leather, 2 Slimy Murloc Scales, and Fine Thread. The Field Guide drops from Lady Anacondra in Wailing Caverns. Players who read the placed guide receive Track Beasts alongside the Camp Chair bonus.
  • Trapper's Workbench: Requires Skinning 300 and a taught blueprint. Contains an interactive trap alongside the Camp Chair bonus.

All camping deployables share a 1-hour cooldown and require a nearby campfire. Skinning pairs naturally with the gathering routes covered in the WoW Forever Herbalism Leveling Guide.

Legacy System Perks

The account-wide Legacy System unlocks functional perks by spending points earned through game challenges:

  • Bountiful Harvest: 5 ranks; increases discovery chance for Scarce materials by 20% per rank, reaching 100% at rank 5.
  • Performance Bonus: 5 ranks; grants a 5% chance per rank to receive 100% additional Merchant's Favor on supply crate turn-ins.
  • Working Overtime: 5 ranks; grants a 4% increased chance per rank to gain a tradeskill skill point.
  • Dedicated Study: 1 rank; active ability with a 25-second cast and 23-hour cooldown that raises your lowest tradeskill by 1, or grants 2–4 random Elemental Essences if all primary and secondary professions are at 300.

Frequently Asked Questions

What classes and races are best for Skinning?

Dwarves and Trolls both gain a 5% damage boost against beasts, helping them clear animals faster. Hunters, Rogues, Druids, and Shamans get the most utility by pairing Skinning with Leatherworking to craft their own armor.

Can I skin beasts killed by other players?

Yes, as long as the player who killed the beast has looted anything it dropped.
