Devourer DH 12.1.5 changes land with the content update on October 13, and they are aimed at the spec's two biggest annoyances: cancelled Collapsing Star casts and Void-Scarred builds that avoided the button entirely. On top of that, Devourer picks up PvE-only single-target damage buffs to Consume/Devour, Reap/Cull, Eradicate, Collapsing Star, The Hunt and Voidblade.

What 12.1.5 changes for Devourer

The headline fix is Collapsing Star. Its long cast time and medium range meant it was cancelled constantly, and any cancelled or interrupted cast put it on a hard 5-second cooldown, which led to over-capping souls.

  • Collapsing Star now has increased range after it starts casting, so it fails less often when the target moves out of range.
  • Collapsing Star no longer goes on cooldown for 5 seconds when its cast is cancelled.
  • Collapsing Star only slows Fury drain during its cast for a limited time.
  • If the cast is cancelled and cast again, it can only slow Fury drain for a total of roughly 1.5 full casts.
  • After that limit, Fury drain resumes in full whether or not a cast is interrupted or started again.

The slowed Fury drain existed because players used it to extend Void Metamorphosis and land a Collapsing Star at the right moment; the new limit keeps that from being worth manipulating while normal play is no longer punished.

Void-Scarred talent changes

Void-Scarred's bonuses all centred on entering Void Metamorphosis, which discouraged casting Collapsing Star because it delayed the next entry. Some bonuses now come from casting Collapsing Star instead.

  • Demonic Intensity: Collapsing Star now resets the cooldown of The Hunt.
  • Demonic Intensity: its empower effect for The Hunt now increases The Hunt's damage by 30%.
  • Violent Transformation: now resets the cooldown of Soul Immolation.
  • Violent Transformation: no longer increases The Hunt's damage (was 25%) and no longer resets The Hunt's cooldown.
  • Monster Rising: now grants 10% Intellect while not in demon form (was 15%).
  • Monster Rising: now increases Collapsing Star damage by 20% (was 15%).
  • Soulforged Blades: now increases the critical strike chance of Hungering Slash and Voidblade by 18% (was 15%).
  • Voidpurge: now reduces the cooldown of Void Ray during Void Metamorphosis by 2.5 seconds (was 2 seconds).

Talent tree positions

Many Devourer talents have changed positions, and the final gate was the reason: it was dense and held core building blocks.

  • The Hunt: moves from the final gate to a more accessible location in the middle gate, where Void-Scarred builds need it.
  • Eradicate: also moves to the middle gate, since it is a key component of any build's AoE damage.
  • Demonic Instinct: now connects to the talent one row down and one column to the left.
  • Devourer's Edge: now connects to the talent one row down and one column to the right.

With Eradicate and The Hunt out of the bottom gate, several talents left there — Soulforged Blades, Voidglare Boon, Voidrush and Rolling Torment — are subpar and often taken only for pathing.

Single-target damage buffs

The October 6 tuning pass added PvE-only single-target buffs to bring Devourer's output closer to expectations. None of them apply in PvP combat.

  • Consume/Devour: 8% more damage.
  • Reap/Cull: 8% more damage.
  • Eradicate: 8% more damage to the primary target.
  • Collapsing Star: 8% more damage to the primary target.
  • The Hunt: 10% more initial damage.
  • Voidblade: 10% more damage.

How the rotation plays now

With 12.1.5, Void-Scarred will want to cast Collapsing Star rather than avoid it, and its playstyle will be much closer to Annihilator's, so the spec will no longer swing between two very different builds from patch to patch. The rotation combines the melee combo, Reap, a long Void Metamorphosis with Emptiness, and Collapsing Star.

The cost is mobility. You can get four to five Collapsing Star casts inside a Void Metamorphosis window, which means casting The Hunt directly before it that many times per cooldown, leaving you unable to control your character for roughly five seconds at a stretch, most of it spent in melee. The Fury pause from Voidrush only triggers when The Hunt's cast completes and is short, so Void Metamorphosis can drop during a Collapsing Star cast.

What is still rough

Singular Strikes is still bugged and gives its 50% bonus to a random target. The Apex talents remain fairly weak. No further Devourer changes are coming this patch cycle, and the spec is set for more iteration later.

If you would rather have the raid and key runs handled for you while you learn the new rotation, an Epiccarry WoW PvE gear boost takes the gearing off your hands.
