How hunter pet families and specs work
Every tameable beast belongs to a family, and that family fixes one core ability; the pet's specialization adds two more, and since patch 11.1 you can change a pet's spec at any Stable Master.
- Ferocity: Primal Rage (Bloodlust/Heroism) and Predator's Thirst, +10% Leech — the damage-focused default.
- Tenacity: Fortitude of the Bear and Endurance Training, +5% max health — the tanky pick for soloing.
- Cunning: Master's Call and Pathfinding, +8% movement speed — the utility pick for PvP.
Exotic families require Beast Mastery and grant an extra family-unique ability. Survival and Marksmanship hunters cannot use those families at all, so they build their picks from standard families.
Hunters have up to 200 inactive stable slots plus 5 active Call Pet slots, 205 in total; dismissing a pet does not send it to the stable, and abandoning it deletes it for good.

Florafaun Taming
To tame plant beasts you need the special Florafaun Taming skill, and it is taught by the tome called Trials of the Florafaun Hunter. That tome drops from at least some of Harandar's florafaun rares. Florafaun looks appear in Carrion Birds (Petalwings), Cats, Direhorns and Dragonhawks.
Ethereal Stalker (Exotic)
Ethereal Stalkers are a new Exotic family whose Phase Shift briefly makes the pet untargetable and repositions it behind the target. They appear as non-elite creatures in Harandar's ethereal trading hubs and near the Nexus-Point Xenas dungeon, and any Beast Mastery hunter can tame them with no special requirement. The untargetable window lets the pet dodge boss abilities and player crowd control, which is why hunters pushing high Mythic+ keys rate them.
Whip Tail (Exotic)
Whip Tails are a Beast Mastery-only exotic family with a void-inspired look; amber-brown, blue, orange and red-grey versions have been found. Their knockback, Tail Lash, helps interrupt caster enemies.

- Void-Corrupted Spirit Beast (Exotic): Void Pulse deals area Void damage and applies a healing-reduction debuff to the target.
- Void-touched Devilsaur (Exotic): Void Devour absorbs incoming damage and converts it into pet healing.
- Spectral Hawkstrider: A ghostly-looking tame found around Eversong Woods and the Silvermoon City outskirts, granting the Spectral Dash movement buff; it is one of the easiest new Midnight pets to pick up.
- Dark Mana Wyrm: Found near arcane energy in Eversong Woods and around the Sunwell Plateau, with a stacking Arcane Bite magic-damage debuff; it is not exotic, so any hunter spec can tame it.
- Ashwind (undead eagle): A skeletal rare spawn in the Ghostlands near the Dead Scar crossing, with a spawn timer that can run up to 8 hours.

Plant-infused looks appear in several families:
- Chloroceroses: Direhorn bodies wrapped in vines, with heavy plating.
- Mandragoras: Hydras with barky, faded-bloom tints.
- Saptors: Raptors with fern crests and seed-pod tails.
- Petalwings: Carrion Birds with leaf-frond wings and idle pollen motes.
- Potatoads: Hoppers with bulbous bodies and blink frames.

Rare tames worth tracking
Some of the best tames in the WoW Midnight hunter pet guide are not from Midnight at all — they sit in older zones and dungeons and still work today.
- Tekton: A Mechanical Sheep on a ridge in Elwynn Forest around (51,14); it explodes on contact, so use a Freezing Trap and the Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix to tame it.
- OOX-Fleetfoot/MG: A high-speed Rocket Chicken that only appears on days when Oglethorpe Obnoticus is present after you visit the Isle of Mechagon; the OOX-Avenger/MG that spawns if Fleetfoot is killed is not tameable.
- Azshara Secret Lab rare: Activate levers in sequence in the Azshara Secret Lab to summon it, and it keeps its name when tamed.
