Now, here are the Cataclysm Classic raids and bosses we’ll be working with, sorted by game Phases (updates):

• Phase 1 (includes raids unlocked shortly after the expansion starts; Normal gear of ilvl 359, Heroic gear of ilvl 372–379; contains Tier 11 class sets):
  • Blackwing Descent:
    • Magmaw;
    • Omnotron Defense System;
    • Maloriak;
    • Atramedes;
    • Chimaeron;
    • Nefarian;
  • The Bastion of Twilight:
    • Halfus Wyrmbreaker;
    • Valiona & Theralion;
    • Ascendant Council;
    • Cho’gall — the last boss on Normal difficulty;
    • Sinestra (Heroic only) — the last boss on Heroic difficulty; drops 379 ilvl gear;
  • Throne of the Four Winds:
    • Conclave of Wind;
    • Al’Akir — drops Drake of the South Wind (very rare, any difficulty) and Essence of the Forlorn (Heroic only), a universal token to upgrade your Tier 11 set to its Heroic version;
  • Baradin Hold (only Normal difficulty available in game; bosses drop both PvP and PvE gear):
    • Argaloth — had been there from the start of the Cataclysm expansion when the first raids unlocked; drops ilvl 359 Tier 11 set pieces and ilvl 365 Season 9 Vicious PvP items;
    • Occu’thar — added upon the Firelands raid release; drops ilvl 378 Tier 12 set pieces and ilvl 384 Season 10 Ruthless PvP items;
    • Alizabal — added at the same time with the Dragon Soul raid release; drops ilvl 397 Tier 13 set pieces and ilvl 403 Season 11 Cataclysmic PvP items;
• Phase 2 (starts with the release of the Firelands raid; Normal gear has ilvl 378–384, Heroic gear has ilvl 391–397; contains Tier 12 class sets):
  • The Firelands (check out our Cataclysm Classic Dragonwrath Staff Boost associated with this raid):
    • Shannox;
    • Lord Rhyolith;
    • Beth’tilac;
    • Alysrazor — drops the non-flying Flametalon of Alysrazor mount (drop rate around 2%, any difficulty); and yes, you guessed it, she drops the ‘Alysra’s Razor‘ dagger; get it?
    • Baleroc;
    • Majordomo Staghelm;
    • Ragnaros — wait, he returned?! Drops the flying Smoldering Egg of Millagazor mount (drop rates were around 1% on Normal difficulty and 100% on Heroic back in retail Cataclysm); drops 384 ilvl items on Normal and 397 ilvl on Heroic along with the ordinary ones (378/391); drops Sulfuras, the Extinguished Hand — an epic two-hand mace (for Paladins, Warriors, and Death Knights)!
• Phase 3 (starts at the onset of the Dragon Soul raid release; Normal gear has ilvl 397–403, Heroic gear has ilvl 410–416; contains Tier 13 class sets):
  • Dragon Soul (check out our Cataclysm Classic Fangs of the Father Boost associated with this raid):
    • Morchok;
    • Warlord Zon’ozz;
    • Yor’sahj the Unsleeping;
    • Hagara the Stormbinder;
    • Ultraxion;
    • Warmaster Blackhorn;
    • Spine of Deathwing;
    • Madness of Deathwing — drops these flying mounts: Blazing Drake (any difficulty; drop rate is around 1%) and Life-Binder’s Handmaiden (Heroic only; drop rate was 100% on that difficulty back in retail Cataclysm); drops ilvl 403 items on Normal and ilvl 416 on Heroic.

Here are the differences between Normal and Heroic raid items in Cataclysm Classic:

• Normal raid gear (excluding the Baradin Hold raid for simplicity):
  • Phase 1 (Blackwing Descent, The Bastion of Twilight, Throne of the Four Winds):
    • The item level is 359;
    • Drops Tier 11 Normal set items: Hand, Chest, and Legs are purchased from Faldren Tillsdale (Alliance) or Jamus’Vaz (Horde) with Valor points, while Helm and Shoulders are bought from them with Normal armor tokens dropped from Normal Nefarian and Cho’Gall, respectively;
      Note that this is relevant during Phase 1 only; with each update, vendor item lists swap and change slightly; the same logic applies further;
  • Phase 2 (The Firelands):
    • Item levels are 378 through 384;
    • Drops Tier 12 Normal set items associated with the Firelands raid; the way you obtain them works similarly to the Tier 11 Normal system we just explained;
  • Phase 3 (Dragon Soul):
    • Item levels are 397 through 403;
    • Drops Tier 13 Normal set items associated with the Dragon Soul raid; how you obtain them works similarly to the Tier 11 Normal system we just explained;
      a small side note: there are actually three Tier 13 sets in Phase 3 — with the addition of the Raid Finder difficulty, the Raid Finder Tier 13 set (ilvl 384) was added along with the familiar Normal and Heroic ones;
• Heroic raid gear (excluding the Baradin Hold raid for simplicity):
  • Phase 1 (Blackwing Descent, The Bastion of Twilight, Throne of the Four Winds):
    • Item levels are 372 through 379;
    • New loot is present (the same logic applies to all Heroic raids here);
    • Drops Tier 11 Heroic set items: first, you need to obtain Normal Tier 11 gear (except for Helm and Shoulders, which can be purchased solely for their Heroic tokens), and after that, you must trade both a Normal set piece (Hands, Chest, and Legs) and its respective Heroic token dropped from the Heroic bosses for the Heroic set item (the NPC vendors are the same: Faldren Tillsdale for Alliance or Jamus’Vaz for Horde).
      Valor points are not required. Al’Akir’s Heroic drop, the Essence of the Forlorn, is a universal Heroic token for any slot;
  • Phase 2 (The Firelands):
    • Item levels are 391 through 397;
    • Drops Tier 12 Heroic set items associated with the Firelands raid; the way you obtain them works similarly to the Tier 11 Heroic system we just explained;
  • Phase 3 (Dragon Soul):
    • Item levels are 410 through 416;
    • Drops Tier 13 Heroic set items associated with the Dragon Soul raid; how you obtain them works similarly to the Tier 11 Heroic system we just explained.

As was already mentioned, vendor item pools and the currency used to buy certain items change with each game update. For instance, starting from the Dragon Soul update (4.3), Tier 11 Normal items are sold by the new vendors, Toren Landow (Alliance) or Rugok (Horde), and for gold of all things. Be ready that currency and item placements (and even their availability in the game) will change unexpectedly.
