Use this rested XP guide for WoW Forever to build a pool that doubles kill experience until it runs out; quest and exploration rewards receive no rested bonus. Inns, capital cities and the Cozy Sleeping Bag let you accumulate that pool, including while logged out.

Where to build rested XP

Look for ZZZ on your portrait to check that you are resting. When you have rested XP available, your experience bar changes from purple to blue, with a marker showing the pool's endpoint.

Rested XP measureBase value
Accumulation in a rested area5% of your current level's XP every 8 hours.
Maximum pool150% of your current level's XP, equivalent to 30 bubbles.
Time from empty to fullAbout 10 days logged out.

Make a rested location your stopping point whenever possible. Check your portrait before leaving the character offline.

Well Rested Legacy perk: speed and cap

Well Rested belongs to the Adventure branch of the Legacy System and improves both rested accumulation speed and capacity. Each of its five ranks adds 4% to both, for a maximum increase of 20%.

Because Well Rested increases speed and capacity proportionally, filling the larger pool takes the same amount of time. Choose it when your leveling plans include substantial time between sessions.

Your first Legacy Point unlocks the Legacy System, which usually happens at level 25; it can also be unlocked by raising a non-gathering primary profession to 150 skill or by fully exploring the world map. Open it through the shield icon on the menu or the default Y key.

Legacy Points are shared across your Battle.net account's non-Hardcore characters, but each character allocates its points independently. Blizzard set the launch spending limit at 16 points per character, so plan your allocation around the work that character will do.

Which bonuses stack with rested XP?

Camp Tent, Well Fed and the Cozy Sleeping Bag bonuses work together and alongside your rested pool. Prepare them before a stretch of fighting rather than interrupting your route repeatedly.

Camp Tent

A Leatherworker can place a Camp Tent at a camp, where resting grants rested experience up to 5% of a level. Treat the tent as a way to replenish your allowance during a stop.

Well Fed from cooked food

Most cooked food supplies Well Fed, adding 5% kill experience alongside its other stat benefits. Its usual duration is roughly 15 minutes, and death removes it.

Cooking is a secondary profession, so it does not occupy either of your two primary profession slots; it is also required to light a campfire. Keep food ready for your next combat stretch.

Cozy Sleeping Bag

Lie in the Cozy Sleeping Bag to gain one percentage point of bonus experience per minute, reaching three stacks for a 3% bonus. That buff lasts one hour and survives death.

The bag's Well-Rested buff is separate from the Well Rested Legacy perk: the former boosts earned experience, while the latter improves your stored rested allowance. Use the bag before continuing your route, and use the Legacy perk to support your breaks between sessions.

How to get the Cozy Sleeping Bag

You must be level 14 to begin the Cozy Sleeping Bag questline. The chain awards experience along the way and five Student Fodder in total; in Forever, Student Fodder regenerates health.

Alliance starting route

  1. Head to Alexston Farmstead in Westfall at 37, 50, locate the wrecked cart, and examine the Burned-Out Remains to start …And That Note You Found.
  2. Travel through Duskwood and Stranglethorn Vale to Booty Bay, then take the boat to Ratchet; high-level enemies make the Stranglethorn journey dangerous.
  3. Head south of Camp Taurajo in the Barrens to the burned tower at 46, 74 and interact with the second Burned-Out Remains to continue into Stepping Stones.

Horde starting route

  1. Start at the burned tower south of Camp Taurajo in the Barrens at 46, 74, using the Burned-Out Remains to accept the opening quest.
  2. Take the Orgrimmar zeppelin toward Grom'gol in Stranglethorn Vale, then swim toward Westfall's southern coast.
  3. Find the wrecked cart at Alexston Farmstead in Westfall at 37, 50, and interact with the other Burned-Out Remains.

Shared quest steps

  1. Stonetalon camp: Take the trail that branches northeast from Sun Rock Retreat at 50.9, 52.3, and keep following it until you reach the deserted camp at 40.6, 52.4. Complete Stepping Stones there and accept Scramble.
  2. Optional campfire: Interact with the camp's fire to complete its optional task using the Simple Wood and Flint and Tinder from the preceding quest.
  3. Mound of Dirt: Climb north from camp and jump toward the mound at 39.6, 49.8. Interact with it to finish Scramble and take Wet Job.
  4. Loch Modan dam: Travel to 49.4, 12.9 and activate the carved heads that face the Wetlands to obtain the Eagle Figurine. Finish Wet Job at this stop and accept Eagle's Fist.
  5. Thoradin Wall: On the Hillsbrad side of the border with Arathi Highlands, find the cart at 87.3, 49.6 and climb into the wall. Pass through the room and look outside to the right for the hanging bag.
  6. Final reward: Use the bag to finish Eagle's Fist and take This Must Be the Place, then interact with the nearby scroll to receive your Cozy Sleeping Bag.

How to spend rested XP efficiently

Rotate characters between sessions

Park inactive characters at inns while you play another character, then rotate through your roster as their rested allowances rebuild. The beta leveling strategy uses four characters in rotation, but its suggested classes are optional.

Choose a rotation that fits your available time. Avoid turning every session into preparation for a character you do not want to play.

Combine kills with useful quests

Plan your route around accepting quests before the relevant trip and handing them in as you pass through, reducing unnecessary backtracking. For broader route planning, use the WoW Forever leveling guide.

Fight enemies close to your level for a useful balance of kill speed and experience. Gray enemies grant no XP, foes under your level yield less than they did in Classic, and enemies far above your level take more time to kill.

Only the first player or group to tag an enemy receives its experience; nearby living group members share credit without each having to strike it. Choose a less contested route when tagging becomes your main delay.

Use dungeon quests alongside rested kills

Eligible dungeon enemies benefit from rested XP. Collect dungeon quests and finish their prerequisite chains before entering so the run advances several objectives together.

The Alliance beta route suggests these early runs; its level ranges are recommendations rather than entry requirements.

DungeonSuggested levels
Hall of Thanes14–17.
Deadmines17–21.
Stockades24–26.
Blackfathom Deeps, optional25–28.
Excavation Site26–30.

For Hall of Thanes, collect Important Heirlooms from Thom Filch and The Restless Dead from Afadra Dunwall, complete Underground Map, and unlock Old Ironforge Incursion from Earthseer Farsen before the run. Inside, collect eight Dwarven Heirlooms, finish the required kills, pick up An Ancient Grudge, and take The Treaty of Understanding from the vault tablet near the final boss.

For Deadmines, prepare The Defias Brotherhood, Red Silk Bandanas, the Testing the Wells chain leading to Destruction in Deadmines, and Underground Assault. Complete Collecting Memories and Oh Brother… in the mines outside the instance, and collect VanCleef's An Unsent Letter for the subsequent Stockades-related chain.

Group with players near your level: a much higher-level member sharply reduces kill experience, while larger groups divide the reward among more players. In a standard group, quest rewards stay the same, though quest objectives won't advance while you are in a raid group.

Free rested XP addon for WoW Forever

Rested XP Planner is a free version 2 addon distributed under the MIT license. For other interface choices, consult the WoW Forever add-ons guide.

Install the addon

  1. Download the version 2 ZIP and close the game.
  2. Open the Battle.net cogwheel menu and pick Show in Explorer if you use Windows, or Reveal in Finder if you use macOS, to find where your active Forever client is stored.
  3. Place the RestedXPPlanner folder inside the client's Interface/AddOns directory so that the RestedXPPlanner.toc and RestedXPPlanner.lua files sit right within the addon folder.
  4. Restart the client and enable the addon from AddOns at character selection.

Open the panel and check your characters

Use /restedxpindicator to toggle the window; you can move the panel and close it with its X button.

For a direct check on each character, hover over the game's experience bar to inspect current XP and the amount required for the next level, then inspect the rested marker and portrait indicator described above. Compare characters before deciding which one to play next.
