Updated November 3, 2026 for the run-up to the WoW Forever launch on November 4, 2026. Written from the beta; details can change at launch.
If WoW Forever can't create character for you, the errors Blizzard lists include "Creation of that type of character is currently throttled" and "This ruleset is temporarily unavailable". Early name reservation runs through November 3, and the game launches November 4.
Reservation dates and eligibility
Early character creation runs from October 27 through November 3. Reservation opened in each region at these times:
| Region | Reservation opened |
| Europe | October 27 at 18:00 CET |
| North America | October 27 at 1:00 p.m. PDT |
| Korea | October 28 at 07:00 KST |
| Taiwan | October 28 at 07:00 CST |
Beta and Invite a Friend codes do not grant it. The benefit applies only to the WoW account it was bought for. Active game time is not required during the window.
You can create up to three characters per account during this window. Two characters on a PvP ruleset leave room for only one on a Normal or Roleplay ruleset.
Throttled creation error
The "Creation of that type of character is currently throttled" error appears when creation of one type is blocked for a time. Community guidance is to change rulesets and try again, restart the client, and wait a few minutes. It also advises against spamming creation attempts, because repeated tries can lock you out as a false flag.
Blizzard's support page does not explain how the throttle works or how long it lasts.

Unavailable ruleset and faction limits
The "This ruleset is temporarily unavailable" error is being looked into by Blizzard support. Early on October 27, reports said all rulesets were greyed out for players who could log in. Later that day, IGN reported that the system seemed fully online.
On the PvP ruleset, you can't have characters of both factions at once. If one faction is much more dominant, creation is temporarily restricted for that faction, and Customer Support cannot bypass the limit. The message for this is "This faction is currently unavailable on this realm due to population imbalance".
Some players reported that PvP creation was blocked for their guild's faction during reservation. Community reports that PvP throttling lifts once faction balance is restored are unconfirmed.
The RP-PvP ruleset may be missing from the list at login. If it is, select a different ruleset and click "Ruleset" in the top bar. The link to the regional rulesets setup is covered in our WoW Forever RP-PvP Server: Launch, Names and Rules article.
Access is the main worry for some players, who report that realms show as unavailable and that disconnects hit during character creation.
Play button greyed out and creation timeouts
If the Play button is greyed out, check that you are logged in to the correct region in Battle.net. A player who had this problem reported that the launcher had been set to another region, and that switching it back to Europe fixed it.
A player reported that launching the game from its install folder got them to the ruleset screen, though the rulesets stayed greyed out. Another player suggested clicking the cog beside Play to see whether Check for updates was selectable.
The "Character creation timed out" error appears on the Finish step. IGN reported that Blizzard was working on a fix. Blizzard later pushed a fix to EU users, telling them to log out and log back in.
Restricted-name errors
Names must be unique within your region, not on one ruleset. Names are first-come, first-served, and a desired name cannot be guaranteed.
Blizzard found a bug in its restricted-name list that wrongly blocked some names, such as names containing "c-o-n". Blizzard said the fix should have gone live with the server restart, though some players still reported problems.
Ruleset choice and switching
A reserved character's ruleset is permanent, so choose it carefully. To play on another ruleset, create a new character there, since characters from Normal, PvP, Roleplay and RP-PvP cannot transfer.
Hardcore is not yet available and releases next year.
