To get in the same phase in WoW Forever, have your friend invite you to their party, wait for the zone refresh notice and press Refresh Now once you are standing somewhere safe. Accepting an invite no longer moves you on its own after the November 4, 2026 launch — it shows that notice so you pick the moment. No menu or command picks a layer for you.

Check your ruleset and faction

In WoW Forever, there is no list of realms; instead you pick a ruleset, and every ruleset acts like a wide player ecosystem, not one realm. Characters must sit on the same ruleset and in the same faction before they can be in one party.

  • Normal: adventuring and fighting monsters, with PvP at your own discretion.
  • PvP: opposing players can attack you nearly all the time.
  • Roleplay: strict naming conventions and behaviour rules for players immersing themselves as a character.
  • Roleplay PvP: the same strict naming and behaviour rules, with near-constant risk from opposing players.

Hardcore becomes available sometime after launch. Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported, with battlegrounds the one exception. On the PvP ruleset, character creation is limited to a single faction. You cannot freely move a character between rulesets later, so settle the choice before creating a character. The rulesets each carry their own player community, which is why a mixed group cannot form in the first place.

How to get in the same phase in WoW Forever

  1. Ask the friend who is already where you want to be to invite you; the invitation is what puts you on the path to their copy of the zone.
  2. Agree on a meeting spot inside the same zone, because each zone is layered on its own.
  3. Open the refresh notice when it appears, walk to a safe spot and press Refresh Now.
  4. When the notice is gone because you dismissed it, use the small arrow beside the chat box at the left of your display to reopen it, then select Refresh Now.
  5. Check that you can both see each other before the next pull, and stay grouped while you quest together.

One player reports that inviting party members one at a time got everyone onto the same layer.

Use the five-minute refresh warning

The notice gives you five minutes before the game carries out the move by itself, and you cannot refuse it. Your only choice is whether it happens when you press the button or when the timer runs out.

ControlWhat it does
Refresh NowPerforms the layer change immediately
OkayHides the large notice; the countdown keeps running
Arrow beside chatReopens the notice, with the time remaining shown on the small reminder on the left

Tell your group when your notice appears and agree where to stop, so nobody starts a pull while someone is mid-transition.

Choose a safe place before switching

A road, a flight path, a town or a camp works because nothing hostile spawns on top of you and guards, vendors and trainers are nearby. Waiting at a campsite you own also counts, and your rested bonus plus profession buffs remain with you during that time.

We would hit Refresh Now while traveling a road or inside a town rather than let the timer expire in a cave: the new layer brings back all the packs you killed while entering.

  • Mobs: every enemy in a camp you recently finished can come back completely, and any hostile creature at your location will spot you at once — alternatively, you may enter a place another player has already cleared.
  • Gathering nodes: each copy has its own herb and mining spawns, so an area that was picked clean can become full once more.
  • Quest objects: an escort or a timed goal may fail if its NPC or item vanishes, because quest mobs and ground pickups are tied to the old copy.
  • Other players: the people near you shift, so a layer that was calm may become contested.
  • Your character: collected loot and quest-log progress stay with you through the transition.

Avoid switching mid-pull, at low health, or deep inside a cave or elite area. Six players on the official WoW: Forever forums report that a layer change dropped them into a new layer surrounded by hostile players or mobs and got them killed.

If your party member is still in a different phase

Zone borders

Crossing from one zone into another can put you on a different layer, since neighbouring zones do not always share their copies. Durotar and Orgrimmar are one example, and Hillsbrad Foothills and Silverpine Forest another. Which zones share layers gets retuned as the population spreads out after launch. If someone disappears after a loading screen or a flight, regroup and run the refresh process again before assuming the sync failed. Nine players on the official WoW: Forever forums report being layered away from their group when crossing zone lines, taking boats or zeppelins, or entering a city. Two players report that after a split left some members on another layer, they regrouped and finished the quest together.

Language setting

Your Preferred Online Language decides which language community and worlds you encounter, and it is separate from your client's text and audio language. To change it, press Escape, open Options, then System and Languages and Social, and set Preferred Online Language. The choice applies to every character on the account, and a change starts a 24-hour cooldown before you can change it again. Match this setting with your friend before either of you touches it.

Guild

There are no realms in WoW Forever; instead, it attempts to put you with your guild and the people you often meet on one layer. Joining your friends' guild early improves the odds of landing in their world even when you are not grouped. Treat that as help with future placement, not a substitute for checking where your party actually is now.

What changed between beta and launch

WoW Forever launched on November 4, 2026, with grouping behaviour adjusted from the beta.

  • Joining a party: during the beta, you were sent to the leader's layer right away; at launch you get the refresh notice instead.
  • Forced moves: during early beta, tuning caused players to be relocated too frequently; the launch setup targets fewer involuntary refreshes, and each comes with an alert.
  • Large world PvP: expanding servers so big battles stay on one layer was looked at but was not part of launch.

i played the beta release and stress test with my friends and it was no problem to do quests in the starting zones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pick a specific layer from a menu?

No. Every route runs through the refresh notice, so you reach a particular copy by grouping with someone already on it.

Does a layer change reset my quest progress?

No. You keep your character, quest log and loot, but quest mobs and ground pickups belong to the old copy and may be missing.

Can I refuse a refresh?

No. The only choice is whether the move happens when you press Refresh Now or when the five-minute timer expires.
