Install WoW: Forever from the Battle.net app, pick an experience preset and one of the launch rulesets, then create your character. Your faction decides which cities and stories your character begins with, and your race sets your starting location. The game is due to launch November 4, 2026.
Account setup and install
You can get in with a paid World of Warcraft plan or Game Time, while the Skyborne race is unlocked by buying the Heroic Pack or something above it. Blizzard suggests considering two-factor authentication on your Battle.net account. Players on Windows or Mac can use a keyboard and mouse, while controller support has reached a complete functional state.
- Install the Battle.net app on your Windows or Mac computer, and then sign in.
- Select WoW: Forever from the menu.
- Under the Game Version menu, choose WoW: Forever and pick your active account.
- Click Install and wait for the progress bar to finish.
- Click Play.
For the paid options Epiccarry sells for this game, see the WoW Forever services page.
Experience preset
The first login asks you to choose a preset: Classic, with simpler visuals and standard models, or Enhanced, with higher visual fidelity and more interface features on by default. If you are unsure, start with Enhanced. You can change its settings later under Game Menu > Options.
Rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay-PvP
Choose your ruleset before you create a character. It sets how PvP works and which community rules apply. Traditional realms are gone, so you choose a ruleset instead.
- Normal: adventuring and fighting monsters, with PvP at your discretion.
- PvP: open-world PvP, with the risk of attack by the opposing faction through much of the world.
- Roleplay: naming and behavior rules for players who want to stay in character.
- Roleplay-PvP: roleplay rules combined with open-world conflict against the opposing faction.
- Hardcore: a later release where a character's journey can end in death, slated for Winter 2026.
You can only group, join guilds, run dungeons and raid with players on the same ruleset and faction. Agree on both with friends before you create characters. Blizzard calls Normal a welcoming place to learn.
Faction, race and class
Your faction controls which cities and stories your character starts with, your race sets your appearance, starting location and racial abilities, and your class sets your role. Read the options on the character creation screen before you pick.
Skyborne is a new race that joins either faction at creation. Alliance Skyborne can be Mages, and Horde Skyborne can be Shamans. Skyborne can also be Druids, Hunters, Rogues and Warriors. Blizzard lists new race and class combinations, including Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin.
Starting zones by race
- Dwarf and Gnome: Dun Morogh
- Human: Elwynn Forest
- Night Elf: Teldrassil
- Skyborne: Zephras Isle, a level 1 to 12 zone
- Orc and Troll: Durotar
- Tauren: Mulgore
- Undead: Tirisfal Glades
Elwynn Forest ranks first among starting zones and Durotar ranks last in one ranking. Any character can reach any starting zone of its faction from level 1, and travel generally takes 10 to 25 minutes. Skyborne routes pass Valanaar and Dalaran, and the Hillsbrad Foothills stretch has high-level hostile mobs to avoid. Almost all Horde Paladin trainers sit in the Undead zones, and Dwarf Shamans on the Alliance side are best started in Dun Morogh.

Character appearance and two-part names
Choose High Definition or Standard Definition models for each new character. The selection affects only appearance, with no effect on abilities or progression, and it can be altered afterward through the Options Menu or a Barbershop.
Every name has two parts, and the full combination must be unique within your region. Both parts must follow the Code of Conduct, and full-name combinations go to the first claimer. You can hide your second name under Options > Nameplates, but it still shows in chat.
Quests and the Quest Log
Seek out non-player characters marked by an exclamation point over their heads, as they offer quests to take on. Press L to open the Quest Log, and use Track or Untrack to set what shows in the tracker. Press M to open the world map with quest markers, and abandon a quest if your log fills up. A question mark above a character means a quest is ready to turn in.
Quests are the main way to reach level 60. Dungeon mobs give less experience than before, while dungeon quest rewards are higher, so one clear with its quests is worth more than repeating it.
Combat, death and the Spirit Healer
Put frequent abilities on your action bar and check each tooltip. Press P to open your Spellbook and drag abilities to the bar. Visit a class trainer as you level to learn new abilities. Trainers add a new ability every 2 levels, so try each one before adding many buttons.
Keep food and drink on hand, since innkeepers sell both and can bind your Hearthstone. While getting familiar with the game, fight only one foe at a time.

If you die, you release at a nearby graveyard, then follow the corpse marker or press M to find your body and select Resurrect. The Spirit Healer can resurrect you at the graveyard, but that damages your gear and may apply Resurrection Sickness, which lowers your effectiveness, so avoid combat until it ends and repair as soon as you can.
Newcomers want clearer guidance on kiting, what dying costs and which zone suits their level, a view a few players share.
Gear, bags and vendors
Hover over an item in your bags to compare it with your equipped gear, and check armor type, weapon compatibility and class attributes, since higher quality is not always better. Right-click an item to equip it, or open the Character panel with C.
Right-click a vendor to buy or sell, and check the Buyback tab if you sold something by mistake. Vendors with an anvil icon repair gear for a fee. Gray items have no further use and can be sold. Sell junk in one go with the junk button on a vendor, and bank the materials you want to keep.
Keep unusual items until you understand them, since Forever hides some item data and has set pieces that matter later. Your gold has jobs like bags, training and travel, so spend it on upgrades that remove a real bottleneck. Blizzard has no current plans for WoW Tokens or paid Character Boosts.
Professions
A single character may pick up two primary professions along with all three secondary ones. Gathering covers Herbalism, Mining and Skinning, crafting covers Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking and Tailoring, and secondary professions are Cooking, Fishing and First Aid. Press K to open the Professions window. Learn each one from a trainer in a starting area or major city.
Start professions early, since Forever adds more than 600 recipes and ties them into leveling. Healing Potions have moved from Alchemy to First Aid in the current beta.
A node's color shows its skill-up chance: orange is sure, yellow likely, green unlikely, gray none, and red too high. Skinning needs a skinning knife, mining needs a pick, and fishing needs a fishing rod. Visit the weapon master in Orgrimmar or Stormwind to learn more weapon types.
If you want to hand off the gathering or crafting grind, WoW Forever professions is a service that takes that work off your hands.
Grouping and dungeons
Ask for assistance by forming a group with players nearby, joining a guild, or messaging in chat. Dungeon groups are generally five players, with a tank, a healer and damage dealers. Forever keeps Classic-style tagging, so the first player or group to tag a mob gets credit, and Blizzard intends that friction to encourage grouping.
Sign yourself up on the meeting stone or the group browser, or look through the browser to join a party. Dungeons give gear and quests to share. Campsites let you rest, share profession benefits and trade with others.
If a dungeon run is out of reach, a WoW Forever dungeon carry can handle the group and the clear for you.
Leveling tips
- Rested experience: log off in an inn to return with rested experience.
- Camping buffs: sitting next to a campfire for a sixty-second timer grants buffs, and cooking campfire dishes stacks even more.
- Food: buy food and drink at or near your level, since higher-level food is greyed out.
- Flight masters: discover them to fly between zones and save walking, and a green mark means undiscovered.
- Mounts: one creator reports the level 40 mount costs 95 gold and the level 60 mount 950 gold, both from the race's mount trainer, with no flying mounts.
- Talents: respecs cost money, so choose talents carefully after level 10.
- Legacy: Forever's account-wide Legacy System shows 65 points at launch, and one character can spend 16. Treat it as a long-term reward, not a launch checklist.
For routes through the early zones, see the WoW Forever leveling guide.
Some players say the Classic-style feel draws them in, including ones who quit WoW before, a view many players hold. Forever is a separate permanent version of Azeroth, so Classic Era and Modern WoW keep running alongside it.
