Shadowfang Keep's entrance is in Silverpine Forest, just north of Pyrewood Village, reached by a ramp near the Greymane Wall. Kill Rethilgore and speak to the freed prisoner to open the courtyard, then continue through the keep toward Archmage Arugal. The extended loot order has 11 entries, including the stable horses, rare Deathsworn Captain and Arugal's Voidwalker.

Entrance location and travel routes

Horde route

Fly to the Sepulcher, follow the road south, then turn west toward the keep. Non-Undead Horde characters can take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar or Durotar to Tirisfal Glades before continuing into Silverpine Forest.

Alliance route

The boat route connects Stormwind Harbor, Auberdine, Menethil Harbor and Southshore before the final walk into Silverpine Forest.

  1. Take the boat from Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine.
  2. Cross to the other side of Auberdine's port and board the Menethil Harbor boat.
  3. Stay aboard for the Southshore stop in Hillsbrad Foothills.
  4. Follow the road from Southshore into Silverpine Forest and approach the keep north of Pyrewood Village.

Skyborne characters can instead teleport from Stormwind's Mage Tower to Dalaran and travel through Ambermill. We'd use that shortcut for Skyborne and the boat route for newer Alliance characters: the latter is the safer travel option described for newcomers.

Shadowfang Keep is a five-player dungeon. Its listed brackets cover different recommendations: 18–21 for a first run, 18–30 overall, 20–30 for dungeon tuning, or 22–30 as the recommended range. Allow about an hour for the run; level 24 is described as comfortable for facing Arugal.

We'd aim for level 24 for a first full clear rather than the earliest first-run bracket: Arugal is a comfortable target there, and his Void Bolt puts heavy pressure on the tank.

Bring physical damage alongside the tank because courtyard Moonwalkers can become immune to magic for 10 seconds. Curse removal helps against Silverlaine, while a pet or an off-tank can separate Springvale's silencing add from the healer.

The WoW Forever Shadowfang Keep Boost takes group coordination and the dungeon clear off your hands.

How to open the courtyard gate

  1. Clear the gatehouse and descend to the cells; kill Rethilgore before attempting the courtyard door.
  2. Use the wall lever to release Deathstalker Adamant for Horde, then start his dialogue and let him walk to the gate.
  3. Alliance players speak to Sorcerer Ashcrombe, the other prisoner who opens the courtyard entrance after the jailer dies.

For Deathstalkers in Shadowfang, turn right after passing through the opened gate, kill the worg pack and speak to Deathstalker Vincent.

Quests to collect before entering

The Book of Ur

Horde characters can accept this quest at level 16 from Keeper Bel'dugur in the Undercity Apothecarium, at 53.6, 54.0. Loot the book from the bookshelf in Fenrus's room and return it to Bel'dugur; the turn-in grants 100 Undercity reputation.

The book has a 10-second respawn cooldown between looters, so let everyone who needs it finish before leaving the room. Reward choices include Grizzled Boots or Steel-clasped Bracers, with Tattered Mittens also listed as an option.

Deathstalkers in Shadowfang

At level 18, Horde characters can collect this from High Executor Hadrec at the Sepulcher, around 43.4, 40.8 or 43.4, 40.9. Find both Deathstalker Adamant in the cells and Deathstalker Vincent in the courtyard; the completed quest grants 18 silver and 100 Undercity reputation.

Equipment rewards include Ghostly Mantle, Tanned Shoulderpads or Bronzed Shoulderguards.

Arugal Must Die

Horde characters can accept this at level 18 from Dalar Dawnweaver at the Sepulcher, at 44.2, 39.8. Loot the Head of Arugal from the final boss and return it for Seal of Sylvanas and 200 Undercity reputation.

The separate SFK quest guide covers these assignments alongside the class-specific pickups.

The Orb of Soran'ruk

Warlocks of either faction can begin at level 20 with Doan Karhan near Camp Taurajo in the Barrens, at 49.2, 57.2 or 49.3, 57.2. You need three Soran'ruk Fragments from Blackfathom Deeps and one Large Soran'ruk Fragment from Shadowfang Keep.

Shadowfang Darksouls after Baron Silverlaine drop the large fragment, but it is not guaranteed and they are immune to Shadow damage. Return the fragments to Doan Karhan for Orb of Soran'ruk or Staff of Soran'ruk.

The Test of Righteousness

This level-20 Alliance Paladin weapon chain begins through Tome of Valor in Stormwind's Cathedral Square and leads to Jordan Stilwell outside Ironforge, at 52.4, 36.8 in Dun Morogh. Recover Jordan's Smithing Hammer from the stables containing the Fel Steeds; completing the wider chain rewards Verigan's Fist.

A Moon-Kissed Blade

Horde Paladins can start the level-20 chain with Diplomatic Incident at Bandarian Keep in Tirisfal Glades. Its Sepulcher stage involves Lumina Windsinger at 43.2, 41.0, with Danitha Morr named at the chain's level-20 start.

The Horn of Xelthos

Rogues begin at a Dead Drop near the entrance, at 47.1, 71.1 in Silverpine Forest, and must complete the route solo. Master of Deception is recommended for lower-level attempts.

  1. Pickpocket Venture Co. enemies in Windshear Crag, Stonetalon Mountains, for a Venture Co. Work Order.
  2. Hand the work order to Veenix, who is nearby, so you can get a Breaching Charge for the door that is normally unlocked after Rethilgore.
  3. Pickpocket Gemela in Silverlaine's dining hall for the Sister's Half-Key.
  4. Continue beyond Silverlaine, take the right at the stairs and pickpocket Gefell for the Brother's Half-Key.
  5. Combine the halves into the Twin Key and open the stables chest containing the Horn of Xel'thos.

The quest rewards Pyrewood Signet Ring.

Boss order and encounter tactics

The numbered sequence below follows the extended loot order; the client separately recognizes eight core encounters, and Deathsworn Captain is a rare spawn.

Rethilgore, Fel Steed, Baron Silverlaine, Commander Springvale, Odo the Blindwatcher and Deathsworn Captain in World of Warcraft: Forever

1. Rethilgore

Clear the nearby worgen, including enemies on the floor above the jail, before pulling. Two nearby enemies can be pulled separately; polymorph or kill the remaining Bleak Worg before focusing Rethilgore.

Soul Drain roots its victim for 10 seconds while draining health into the caster, and its immobilization can be dispelled as Magic. It has a 40-yard range, a two-second cast and no resource cost; interrupt it when possible.

2. Fel Steed / Shadow Charger

The stables contain three horses that all engage when one is attacked, even though they begin neutral. Polymorph one, let a pet or an off-tank hold another, and focus down the third; their combined damage is dangerous.

Fel Steed in World of Warcraft: Forever

Fel Stomp can disrupt the tank's threat generation. The stable encounter can be left alone if it is outside your objectives.

3. Razorclaw the Butcher

Turn left from the courtyard into the kitchen. Clear the room and its patrols before engaging, then heal through Butcher Drain.

4. Baron Silverlaine

Pull dining-hall packs back into the cleared kitchen before fighting Silverlaine. His Veil of Shadow reduces healing received by 75%; interrupt the cast or remove the curse, and have hybrid characters help heal if it remains on the tank.

The current client contains castable Veil of Shadow variants with a 1.5-second cast time.

5. Commander Springvale

Springvale can be found by going up the stairs and turning left past the dining hall, where it is joined by a Haunted Servitor and a Wailing Guardsman. Clear surrounding packs before engaging; Screams of the Past silences players within five yards for five seconds.

We'd kill the Servitor first when a pet or an off-tank can isolate the Guardsman, then kill Springvale and finish the Guardsman; without reliable separation, kill the Guardsman first to protect the healer from its silence.

Interrupt Holy Light and account for Hammer of Justice and Divine Shield, which can stun a target and grant Springvale 10 seconds of immunity respectively.

6. Odo the Blindwatcher

Odo's two Vile Bats cleave and disarm, so face them away from the group and allow the tank time to establish threat. Crowd-control a bat if possible, kill the bats first, then focus Odo.

Howling Rage increases his damage as the encounter continues.

7. Deathsworn Captain

This rare can appear in the corridor after Odo. Face him away from the party to contain Cleave, and keep him at least 10 yards from any Wailing Guardsmen. If he engages with the two nearby Paladin adds, hold threat on all enemies and kill the adds promptly.

8. Arugal's Voidwalker

The voidwalker encounter is associated with Fenrus: four adds appear at 50% of Fenrus's health or after his death, when Arugal briefly appears to summon them. Pick up threat on all four and kill them; they can remain after Fenrus dies, and clearing the post-death wave opens the onward door.

9. Fenrus the Devourer

Before the library, stay near the close corner and use the stairs; following the far wall can pull enemies from the floor above. Fenrus applies Toxic Saliva, a poison damage-over-time effect that should be cleansed when possible.

Loot The Book of Ur before continuing if you have its quest, avoiding a return trip through the keep.

10. Wolf Master Nandos

Four worgs surround Nandos; pull them separately where possible, with Nandos either joining after they die or engaging alongside them. Focus any remaining worgs before the boss, then immediately kill new summons while the tank collects them.

His calls include Bleak Worgs, Lupine Horrors and Slavering Worgs.

11. Archmage Arugal

Use walls, pillars or the stairs to break line of sight on Void Bolt and force Arugal to move. Ranged characters can use the entrance platform to reach his teleport locations, while melee wait for him instead of chasing out of the healer's sight.

Shadow Port reduces the tank's threat, so avoid taking aggro during teleports. Arugal's Curse controls a player for 10 seconds; crowd-control that player or have the tank taunt them, and use hybrid healing if the healer is disabled.

Thundershock deals area damage. A slower approach pulls Arugal into Nandos's room and uses the doorway near the spiral stairs, making him walk back after teleports and creating drinking opportunities for the healer.

Black Tome and the next dungeon

Every player should loot the Black Tome in Arugal's room. Bring it to the town hall in Ambermill and combine it with a Leyline focus to craft the Tome of Dalaran, which summons an extra boss in the City of Dalaran dungeon.

Avoiding extra pulls and recovering after a wipe

Pull corridor and stair packs back into cleared rooms, keep courtyard fights away from wandering packs, and stay away from rampart edges because a fall can take you out of the keep. Courtyard trash can be skipped for speed or killed for experience; one overleveled group handled packs of three to five with area damage.

If someone survives, wait for a resurrection when available: early Priests and Shamans may have it, while Paladins need their resurrection quest and Druids may not have trained their combat resurrection yet. After a full wipe, release and return as a ghost; entering the instance recovers your body.

The Horde Spirit Healer is at the Sepulcher, while Alliance characters return from Southshore in Hillsbrad Foothills.
