Heavy Metal is demanding because ranking up depends on how consistently you win matches, collect Coins, and clear rotating event challenges during a very short event window. Queueing solo means dealing with random teammates, uneven lobbies, and wasted time, while the rank track keeps asking for more matches and wins to push from rank 1 toward rank 15. Here’s how the Destiny 2 Heavy Metal Service works:

Heavy Metal is a limited-time PvP event where players fight in Drake Tanks vs Fallen Brigs instead of on-foot Crucible loadouts. Teams score by destroying enemy vehicles and collecting dropped Coins, racing to a set point total to win the match. It uses its own ruleset, reward track, and event challenges separate from core Crucible.
Heavy Metal uses a dedicated event rank track that runs from rank 1 to rank 15. Each rank is tied to match participation, performance, and event objectives, with key cosmetic and gameplay rewards gated behind the higher tiers.
Open the Director, go to the Crucible / Events section (or the Portal UI, depending on the current layout), and select the Heavy Metal playlist. You don’t need any DLC or minimum Power level; the mode is free for all players while the event is active. Simply queue up, load into your vehicle, and start earning event rank.
The fastest way to rank up is to chain matches with a good win rate, constantly collect Coins from destroyed vehicles, and complete the daily and weekly event challenges shown in the Event Home tab. Playing in a coordinated squad (or using a boost service) dramatically improves match outcomes, which in turn speeds up your rank gains and reward unlocks.
Heavy Metal is a limited-time event that typically lasts about one week per run. Exact dates can change with Bungie’s seasonal calendar, so you should always check the in-game event banner or official announcements to know when the current Heavy Metal window begins and ends.
In Heavy Metal, combat is focused on preset vehicles (Drakes and Brigs), so your standard weapons don’t define your damage output. However, your general settings, sensitivity, and familiarity with vehicle controls still matter for precision shots, movement, and dodging enemy fire.
