Cataclysm Classic Profession Kits

The Cataclysm Classic professions in a nutshell is like that. The level cap for all professions has been increased from 450 to 525, however, the new Cataclysm recipes are available at the profession level of 425. As opposed to the Wrath of the Lich King system, in Cataclysm, you no longer need multiple NPCs to teach you a profession in its entirety. You now can learn all the recipes from a single profession trainer except for the newly added general trainers who inhabit the starting zones and teach you all the primary professions, albeit offering only a basic level of training.

There’s only one new profession (and a secondary one of all things) added in Cataclysm — Archaeology. Mechanically, it’s a far cry from other WoW professions, but that’s a topic for another discussion.

Primary Professions are the first you might be interested in. You can only have two of them on your character, so pair them wisely, as it might make your life a tad easier since some professions work well with each other (like Alchemy and Herbalism), and some don’t (like Engineering and Tailoring). 

Here’s the Crafting sub-category of Primary Professions encompassing the bulk of all the Cataclysm Classic professions:

• Alchemy — all about potions and elixirs. Has a Mixology perk allowing you to have additional bonuses from using the elixirs and flasks you crafted. The best match is the Herbalism profession. A new (insanely cool) Cataclysm addition is the Vial of the Sands flying mount you can use to carry other players (needs level 525 of Alchemy and level 450 of Archaeology to find and craft);
• Blacksmithing — all about making weapons and Plate armor. With its perks, you can permanently add a socket to either your Bracers or Gloves. The best match is the Mining profession;
• Enchanting — all about enchanting your gear to increase its stats. Its perks allow you to permanently enchant your own rings (they become soulbound after enchanting) with additional Strength, Agility, Intellect, and Stamina. • Engineering — well, where to even begin… Engineering is all about tinkering, with its grenades, cogwheels, and whimsical devices. There’s much you can do with this profession, starting with perks such as Synapse Springs (and many others) and finishing with crafted Head items called Goggles which come with special sockets for cogwheels — Engineering-specific ‘gems’. • Inscription — all about creating glyphs and scrolls. Glyphs are like talents in Cataclysm Classic, empowering your skills with new passive abilities. Its perks allow you to permanently buff your own (and only your own) shoulder armor with Strength, Stamina, Intellect, and Agility. The best match is the Herbalism profession;
• Jewelcrafting — all about gems you can place in gear sockets (gems increase your stats). The profession allows you to equip Jewelcrafting-specific gems called Chimera’s Eye — three total — which provides a neat increase to a stat of your choice. The best match is the Mining profession.
• Leatherworking — all about crafting Leather and Mail armor. Its perks allow you to empower your own bracers with extra Stamina, Agility, Strength, and Intellect. The best match is the Skinning profession;
• Tailoring — all about crafting bags and Cloth armor. Its perks allow you to buff your own cloak with additional Intellect, Spirit, and Attack Power. The best match is the Enchanting profession, as Tailoring does not rely on a gathering profession like the previous ones.

Now, let’s take a quick look at the Gathering sub-category of Primary Professions. These are considered supporting professions for the Crafting ones:

• Herbalism — all about gathering herbs, quite unexpectedly! Has a perk that allows instant healing and Haste buff. Herbalism works well with Alchemy and Inscription;
• Mining — all about mining ores. Unlocks the passive Stamina buff at profession level 525. Mining works great with Blacksmithing, Engineering, and Jewelcrafting;
• Skinning — all about skinning the defeated beasts. Grants a passive Critical strike rating buff at profession level 525. Skinning works perfectly with Leatherworking.

• First Aid — all about crafting healing bandages from various types of Cloth. Can be used to heal yourself or a friendly player. Otherwise, nothing special;
• Cooking — allows you to cook all kinds of meals which restore health and mana and buff your stats. Cooking and Fishing complement each other greatly. 
• Fishing — an intricate profession revolving around… fishing. Has multiple daily quests to accompany you, as well as companions (pets) and achievements. Works perfectly with Cooking: these two are often leveled up in conjunction;
• Archaeology — a new profession in Cataclysm Classic. Has a separate set of mechanics pivoting around excavating artifacts from dig sites around the world to increase your Archaeology level. Has nice rewards like the Vial of the Sands flying mount, the Fossilized Raptor mount, and the rare Zin’rokh, Destroyer of Worlds two-hand sword.
